Of course maximum sea ice is not relevant to the penguin chicks—they overwinter inland.

When they return to the coast the breakup of ice, the melt puddles on the ice are a great danger to the chicks—they either freeze or drown if they fall in sea or melt water. When a colony cannot reproduce it eventually goes extinct. The trend in Antarctic sea ice is inexorably down with the Antarctic basin the warmest ocean basin.
