How will dopey Monk explain this?
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-67818872 The Chinese capital, Beijing, has experienced its coldest December since records began in 1951. Temperatures in the city have frequently fallen below -10C this month. It has been a year of extremes in the capital: six months ago, Beijing recorded its hottest ever June day, at just over 40C. China has been hit by several waves of extremely cold weather already this winter. A Beijing weather observatory recently recorded more than 300 hours of below-freezing temperatures in under two weeks, according to the state-backed China Daily news agency. The cold snap has affected provinces across China, with schools in some areas being forced to close and transport services facing difficulties. Persistent cold weather has put energy supplies in Henan province under strain, with reports that some heating boilers have broken down. |

Arctic blast: Record-breaking cold weather forecast for many states Published 18 hours ago A major winter storm has unleashed icy winds and heavy snowfall across large parts of the US, disrupting travel and leaving thousands without power. The storms will be followed by a bitter cold arctic chill into the weekend, with temperatures dipping near -50F (-45C) in some areas. Nearly 10in ((25.4cm) of snow in Iowa, where the 2024 election cycle kicks off on Monday, has upended campaign events. Forecasters have called it a "life-threatening winter weather". The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued weather alerts in nearly every state, as snow is in the forecast into Saturday from as far west as Oregon to as far east as Maine. More than 70 million people are under winter weather alerts. Extreme weather has forced the cancellation of more than 2,000 flights as of Friday, most of which were scheduled to fly out of Chicago, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. Nearly 200,000 people are without power as of Friday evening, with Michigan and Wisconsin most affected. |

I would understand that being at 38 degrees south latitude would mean that you would have cooler conditions for times when the wind direction is coming from the south. But, 11°C at night during December/January is something wild. I had a doona over me and the fan off the last time I had a night of 11°C. Heck, I had a winter where I did not see anything below 15°C until the latter part of June and into July. Sun is down before 7pm every day of the year. Sun is not up before 5am in the morning. We get more direct sunlight everyday of the week in the summer than you would with your 15 hours of sunlight during the summer. But, that cool breeze from the south is enough to get you cold weather during the summer. You might want to keep your "tropical dog" comments for people with such pets living in your suburb. |

And then there is a set of louvres on the other railing that Dad can wind shut. Regardless, there are not many breeds of dog that can handle cold conditions. |

NFL’s policy over cold-weather games questioned after fans treated for hypothermia and frostbite at Chiefs-Dolphins game By Ben Morse, CNN 6 minute read Published 4:54 AM EST, Sat January 20, 2024 As the icicles formed on Andy Reid’s bushy mustache and players huddled around heaters, Kansas City’s freezing weather must have sent shivers down the spines of many onlookers. Conditions at Arrowhead Stadium during the Kansas City Chiefs’ 26-7 win over the Miami Dolphins were tough for players and coaches to deal with, but even more so for fans: the temperature at kickoff was -4 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of -20 degrees, making it the fourth coldest game in NFL history, CNN has reported. At the end of the January 13 game, the temperature was -9 degrees and felt like -28 degrees, according to the Peacock broadcast. While players could run around, use heaters on the sidelines and go to the locker-room at halftime to help deal with the cold, fans were forced to wrap up warm and embrace the elements. But it was still too much for some. The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) rendered aid to 69 people – with “close to 50% … for hypothermia symptoms” – during the game, KCFD battalion chief Michael Hopkins told CNN. Fifteen of the patients seen were transported by KCFD, “seven for hypothermia symptoms, three for frostbite symptoms, and five for various other reasons,” said Hopkins. |
