I tried out a rust removal technique recently and
I might post about it if anyone is interested? I used Aluminium Sulphate as the solution. |

Did it work on your brain?
Guess not. |

I have neve heard of that. What sort of metal is it, is it bad rust? I have used various rust converters on really bad rust and rust protection on some not so had. They all worked pretty well. I think clean it up (wire brush) and seal it with primer to stop oxygen getting to it helps a lot. Normally it is not a big problem. Galvanic corrosion is a bit different. |

Nope, definitely did not work on Booby’s brain. Then again—not much to work on, eh? |

I did - I looked around for something rusty and I found some bathroom scales. |
Title: Re: Rust removal Post by Bobby. on Dec 19th, 2023 at 2:31pm I got inspired by the many rust removal videos on YouTube - and so I looked around for something I had that was rusty to try it on and I found my bathroom scales needed to be improved. I don’t have a picture of before but the whole top of the area where you stand and sides were very rusty. I was going to throw it out but they still work perfectly. I removed the top part of the scales and also vacuumed it out and oiled the mechanism inside. I used Aluminium Sulphate – swimming pool water cleaner/improver - on the top part as the rust removing chemical – superior to what they are using on YouTube - and my 12V power supply for electrolysis inside a large plastic tub. It worked really well after about 3 hours. I had some old but proper white paint – a spray can of some White Rust-Oleum Ultra cover paint and primer. I painted it about 10 days ago. I probably should have done a second coat? I bought a stick on tile from Bunnings today for $2.55. – cut it to shape instead of reusing the old ruined tile. Anyway – I’m happy with the results. Rust removal is interesting and can rejuvenate old items making the usable again. :) |

OK - well it's time to have a look through your tools etc and see if anything is rusty and needs a good rust treatment. :) Do you have a 12V power supply? Mine was drawing about 2 amps. |

I give my saws, chisels and planes a spray with WD40 or the like every now and then. Found rubbing wax on the plane base make it slide over the wood much better. A touch of prevention goes a LONG way. Even when they are pretty spotty, a spray of anything helps |

Yes - always keep tools well oiled. Actually - electrolysis will damage the edge of any sharp tools such as chisels, scissors or knives so it can still be done but then you have a major re-sharpening job to do. |

Coca Cola and a scourer work well on rust.

A further interesting note - copper plating.
Use about a cup full of Aluminium Sulphate for every 2 litres of water always in a plastic container. Have good ventilation due to Hydrogen gas. You can also use the same method for copper plating the item you have cleaned of rust. The formally rusted item is connected always to the 12V negative electrode and the positive 12V to the sacrificial electrode - just some steel strips. Also - to the negative electrode attach copper wire in the solution of Aluminium Sulphate - use multi-stranded wire. That copper wire will dissolve in the solution in about 20 minutes creating copper ions that will copper plate the item that is also negative. It won't be flaky copper plate that will rub off but - high quality thick copper plating! That will form a nice surface as for a finished item or it can also be painted over. Note - only shiny clean areas will be copper plated. So - where can you buy your Aluminium Sulphate from? https://www.bunnings.com.au/hy-clor-2kg-flocculent-soft-pack_p3090210 $20.85 for 2 kg. Normal usage: High potency granular flocculent for muddy, algae infested or severely cloudy pools. For use in pools where the floor of the pool can no longer be seen due to suspended particles or algae in the water. Always use safety goggles. |

Several tests in this video demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of various store brand rust removal products (CLR, Krud Kutter, Evap-Rust, Loctite Naval Jelly), Muriatic Acid, as well as other options such as using vinegar or Coca Cola. More product details at the very bottom of the description. Which one works the best? After conducting the tests, I like Krud Cutter the best. However, other products, such as Evapo-Rust proved to be very effective as well. Loctite Naval Jelly would be my pick for a flat metal surface. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-MC_ZEXQbw |
