Title: Taylor Swift... "Person of The Year"!
Post by AusGeoff on Dec 7th, 2023 at 2:45am

Time magazine has named Taylor Swift as their Person of the
Year for 2023, bucking their tradition of recognising influential
political leaders and acknowledging the global superstar(?) as
a "source of light" in a "divided world."

The magazine's Person of the Year recognises an individual
"who most shaped the headlines over the previous 12 months,
for better or for worse".  (Which one is Swift?)

"In a divided world, where too many institutions are failing,
Taylor Swift found a way to transcend borders and be a source
of light," Time magazine editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs wrote.

(Presumably, Jacobs is a 14-year-old girl?)

—I seriously believe that this absurd decision marks the
   beginning of the end of the world as we know it.  Or at
   the least confirms the absolute global power of the corporatists
   and crass commercialism.

Tough times make strong men
Strong men make good times
Good times make soft sloppy sentimental weeklings. (Taylor swift is their queen)

Soft sloppy sentimental weaklings will result in tough times

Mother nature has a way of autocorrecting when humanity gets out over its skis

Her music is absolute, immature, infantile rubbish.

I got Google to find her best song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvVBuG4IOW4

How can people let their brains be insulted by that?

I don't think we should be harsh on Taylor as an individual
In fact she is climbing the narrow road to success by pandering too the masses

The masses are addicted to sugary sweet visions of utopia
The masses are addicted to pleasuring themselves
The masses are addicted to getting out of any responsibility for the trajectory of their lives
The masses are sloppy soft marshmallowie spineless structureless blobs of entitlement

Taylor is merely providing the background music to these failures

She is cashing in on their failure
Not much different to McDonald's or KFC in reality and just as popular ;)

She arrived at the time when music was turned into disposable garbage -
she has no classics that anyone will still listen to in 50 years.
She portrays the lack of talent nowadays compared to the 1960s and 70s.

There is something fairly mediocre about a McDonald's cheeseburger
It's certainly is not as appealing as your grandmother's roast beef with gravy and Yorkshire pudding

There is something fairly mediocre about Taylor swift music
In general to be successful with the mainstream masses it does not hurt to be mediocre because the mainstream masses are mediocre

To what kind of people's souls does she resonate more significantly, speak more deeply than anyone else? What kind of people would honour and recognise her above all others as the expression of their life and times in 2023??

Who listens to Taylor Swift? Why?

She's probably not the most appropriate "Person of the Year" but the US probably wants somebody who is a relatively wholesome role model.

I used to run to "Drops of Jupiter". At least it was in my playlist. I grew up with the Beatles, and some of their early lyrics were probably much worse.

The good thing about it was that the pace was spot on 4:15 per kilometer. My preference has been for early classical music, but you can't exactly run to that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's a time to change, hey
Since the return of her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June.....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Versus:

She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

You think you've lost your love
Well, I saw her yesterday
It's you she's thinking of
And she told me what to say

She says she loves you
And you know that can't be bad
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad

No.

That's not what Person of the Year is about.

As explained before, Adolph Hitler was Time's Man of the Year back in 1938.

Moreover, it's not just a title for Americans - it can be anyone in the world, from any country.

A brilliant marketing strategy by Time Magazine.

If they had chosen Frank's hero - Putin - they would have sold a few hundred copies of the magazine to crusty old farts like him.

But by choosing TayTay, they're gonna sell millions and millions of copies to a whole new audience of teenage girls.

I don't like her music by the way - it's puerile crap, mostly written using variations of the I, V, vi, IV chord progression.

However, it seems like she's got a good head on her shoulders and, by getting millions of young people to register to vote, she's gonna have a huge influence on next year's presidential election.

And hey, she makes a lot of people happy so good luck to her.

(Seeing Frank triggered is just a bonus)

Joni was 17 when she wrote this around 1967 - now 55 years later. Hard to believe a 17 year old could do this.

Not bad from a Lady who following a brain aneurysm couldn't walk or talk in 2015.

I love Elvis (Costello is the real Elvis), and I personally think that's his best song.

As a teenager, he (and that song) changed my view on music.

He set me off in a new direction.

Nothing wrong with this, either:

dear Greggy,
I saw Elvis Costello live in Melbourne - I think it was 1981.

It was a top concert - worth every penny.

And yes, I'm aware that she supports several charitable

According to recent estimates published on CNN, Taylor's Eras

She could take home an estimated US$500 million from this

How are they being dishonest?

Frank: how are they being "deceptive, manipulative and dishonest"?

The "Person of the Year" is not always a person. It can be a person, group, idea, or thing that "for better or for worse...has done the most to influence the events of the year".

This means that being chosen is not an award, like being chosen as the "best person of the year." The Person of the Year may be an enemy of the United States, like Adolf Hitler (1938) or Joseph Stalin (1939 and 1942).

Every year, Time chooses the person who they think has had the most effect on the things that have happened in that year (whether those things were good or bad).

The list of this year’s final nominees included:

Hollywood Strikers
Xi Jinping
Taylor Swift – *WINNER*
Sam Altman
Trump Prosecutors
Barbie
Vladimir Putin
King Charles III
Jerome Powell

Well, of course this doesn't personally affect me at all John.

But would you agree that it's yet another indicator that
our population—particularly the younger, future, scientists,
teachers, engineers, doctors, politicians etc—are being
dumbed down by this sort of media-led drivel?

In purely realistic terms, Taylor Swift has never offered
the world anything of credible value
—nothing that's
enhanced society overall, saved lives, stopped wars, cured
cancer, improved global air quality or water supplies etc.

And yes, I'm aware that she supports several charitable
causes

She can afford to simply as virtue signalling, with no actual
impact on her lifestyle at all.  But it makes her look good in

   Puhleeze!

According to recent estimates published on CNN, Taylor's Eras
tour could gross $2.2 billion in just North American ticket sales
alone, which would make it the highest grossing tour in history.

She could take home an estimated US$500 million from this
single tour.

Is that your beef? That's she's richer and more applauded than you?  :D :D :D

and no, I don't agree that this another indicator of our population dumbing down.  There are billions of her fans who would argue that she has enhanced their lives.

Check out this example:

More than 35,000 people registered to vote after Swift posted on social media Tuesday for National Voter Registration Day, encouraging her fans to register themselves to vote.

Swift posted an Instagram Story urging her 272 million followers to register to vote on Vote.org, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization offering voter registration services. According to Vote.org, Swift and the platform have been working together for several years.

Vote.org has a goal of registering 8 million voters before the November 2024 election, according to a release, and thanks in part to Swift's posts, the nonprofit is making progress toward that goal. After Swift's post, Vote.org was averaging 13,000 users every 30 minutes, Nick Morrow, Vote.org's communications director posted on X, formerly Twitter.

And just check out how many followers she has.

No John, I seriously don't give a damn that she's filthy
rich.  Most people in the public eye have a lot more
money than me, so I'm certainly not singling Swift out
for that reason alone—or at all in fact.

What I do object to is the obscene amount of money a
singer of modest talent with unremarkable vocal prowess
is effectively ripping off millions of naive, impressionable
tweenie girls the world over.

Driven of course—not by any fabulous talent per se—but
by a relentless marketing machine that itself sinks
multi-millions of dollars into promoting Swift.

Anyway...

Despite Time's frequent denials, the designation is often
regarded as an honour and spoken of as an award or prize,
simply based on many previous selections of admirable
people.  However, it points out that controversial figures
such as Adolf Hitler (1938); Joseph Stalin (1939 and 1942);
Nikita Khrushchev (1957); Ruhollah Khomeini (1979);
and Rudy Giuliani (2001) were also granted the title for
their impact on world events.

As a result of the public backlash Time received from its US
readers for naming Khomeini Man of the Year in 1979,
the magazine's editors now shy away from naming people
who're controversial in the United States, fearing reductions
in sales or advertising revenue
Time simply nowadays
chooses someone who'll sell lots of copies.   End of story.

—It's all about money John, with Swift's talent, or lack
   thereof, immaterial.

Uh... I think you may've entirely missed the point
John, considering why I started this thread.  At its
simplest the point I was making was how absurd  it
was that Time chose a mediocre pop singer as its
person of the year.

When you consider the plethora of global figures that

It always is .. Times doesn't publish the magazine so they can lose money.

Uh... I think you may've entirely missed the point
John, considering why I started this thread.  At its
simplest the point I was making was how absurd  it
was that Time chose a mediocre pop singer as its
person of the year.

When you consider the plethora of global figures that
would've made a far more worthy subject:  You know,
people that had actually contributed something material,

Person of the Year (called Man of the Year or Woman of the Year until 1999) is an annual issue of the American news magazine and website Time featuring a person, a group, idea, or object that "for better or for worse... has done the most to influence the events of the year".

"Every year contains light and dark; 2023 was a year with significant shares of darkness. In a divided world, where too many institutions are failing, Taylor Swift found a way to transcend borders and be a source of light. No one else on the planet today can move so many people so well. Achieving this feat is something we often chalk up to the alignments of planets and fates, but giving too much credit to the stars ignores her skill and her power."

The Dark Side is winning... you've got to admit - the Twentieth Century was all its... and the 21st is just accelerating into first place...

Albo should be the Person of the Year - he has single-handedly dismantled democracy in Australia where the vote of the people is paramount.... and replaced it with a dictatorship ..... and all while you dorks sleep on... and half of you will vote for his party next time around... how dumb is that?

Last month, Harvard announced that I would be teaching a class next semester called “Taylor Swift and Her World,” an open-enrollment lecture partly about Swift’s work and career and partly about literature (poems, novels, memoirs) that overlaps with, or speaks to, that work. When the news came out, my inbox blew up with dozens of requests, from as far away as New Zealand. Reporters wanted to know whether Swift would visit the course (not expecting her to), whether her online superfans were involved (some will be), whether Harvard approved (yes, at least so far), and, above all, why a Millennial pop star deserves this kind of treatment at a world-class university.

The first song on Taylor Swift's first record, released when she was 16, paid homage (by name) to a more established country artist. Today she's the most recognizable country-- or formerly country? or pop?-- artist in North America, if not the world: her songwriting takes in half a dozen genres, and her economic impact changes cities. We will move through Swift's own catalogue, including hits, deep cuts, outtakes, re-recordings, considering songwriting as its own art, distinct from poems recited or silently read. We will learn how to study fan culture, celebrity culture, adolescence, adulthood and appropriation; how to think about white texts, Southern texts, transatlantic texts, and queer subtexts. We will learn how to think about illicit affairs, and hoaxes, champagne problems and incomplete closure. We will look at her precursors, from Dolly Parton to the Border Ballads, and at work about her (such as the documentary "Miss Americana"). And we will read literary works important to her and works about song and performance, with novels, memoirs and poems by (among others) Willa Cather, James Weldon Johnson, Tracey Thorn, and William Wordsworth.

I think some Aussie band Rogue Traders with Natalie Bassingthwaite pinched the beat of Elvis Costellos tune.....

in fact almost exactly.

Wonder if they paid for it?

Selena Gomez Explains To Taylor Swift How The Federal Reserve Creates Boom And Bust Cycles Through Manipulation Of Interest Rates And Fiat Currency

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Taylor Swift was visibly shocked and stunned at the Golden Globes this year when Selena Gomez came over to her table to explain how the Federal Reserve causes the boom-and-bust business cycle through the central banking system's manipulation of interest rates and fiat currency.

The moment was caught by the 37 cameras trained on Taylor Swift's table to capture her every reaction throughout the night's proceedings. In the now-viral moment which has been immortalized forever in GIF form, Taylor Swift was seen gasping in reaction to hearing for the first time that inflation, as defined by Ludwig von Mises, is actually the increase in the supply of money and not the resultant increase in prices and that when central banks inflate the currency they artificially stimulate economic activity creating malinvestments.

"What? No way!" remarked Taylor. "So that is the bubble that has to pop at some point and the Federal Reserve tries to keep the charade going as long as they can with low interest rates and cheap credit?!"

"Yeah, totally," replied Selena. "Interest rates should be set by the amount of real savings in the economy to signal to borrowers and producers of capital goods that consumers have a lower time preference, preferring to spend their money on goods and services later. When the real savings are shown to not be there to justify all this economic activity, all those new industries and consumer products will collapse."

"No way!" said Taylor again. "And Mises wrote about all this in his 1912 Theory On Money And Credit? And Friedrich Hayek won a Nobel Prize in economics in 1974 after advancing this so-called Austrian business cycle theory? No. Way."

At publishing time, Taylor Swift was spotted writing a new song about how she was breaking up with Keynesian economic theory and drawing little hearts in her new journal from the Mises Institute.

True story.
