Title: Being charged TWICE for 1 debit card transaction Post by Lisa Jones on Aug 24th, 2023 at 11:41am
I’m so p1$$ed off right now.
Last night/early this morning I did a Big W online shop. Anyway I paid for the shop using e gift cards (I enter competitions and I win e gift cards from time to time so I try and use these up so as not to forget about them). The outstanding amount owing was then paid for using my debit card (note : not a credit card). I always do a fortnightly Big W shop and then get my hubby to pick it up on the way home from the office. It’s a system which has worked well. Up until now. Well this morning I logged into my online bank account and I saw 2 identical amounts had gone through last night (a minute apart) and the payee was Big W. Sooooooo I’ve spent the better part of this morning on iChat with both Big W and my bank only to find both blaming each other. Has anyone ever experienced this?? If so could you please explain what happened? This is a first for me. 😩 |

Take it to Twitter. Find their Twitter handles and use them.
They will fall over themselves to rectify. Have to be truthful tho so I doubt you will do that. |

Phone them up immediately and tell them of the error. Or go into their shop’s customer area and show them.
They should rectify with a cr refund back into your card. Many times I’ve been overcharged, can’t recall being double charged but I still go and get it rectified. In fact last night I had to … was in spotlight…. they had all these laces and trims and iron on motifs all marked down in a $1 bin. When at checkout, the $1 didn’t come up so they had to manually do it on the screen. They omitted one and I was charged $4 instead of $1. I check receipt before leaving store. I went back in line at checkout to show them and they refunded me $3 back into my credit card. Simple. |

Thanks for those posts.
I’ve now been advised by my bank to wait 24 hrs. In case it was a system glitch 👈 see the BS I’m being asked to believe? |

Can't help with yours, but I'm having a bank issue myself.
A payment from one of my regular clients was reversed with a message my account is closed. I've had remittance notices from a few other clients and no payments hit. Yesterday someone transferred me $100 on payid and he reckons it went thru. I called the bank today (45mins on hold) and they said there are no issues with any of my accounts. Too weird! |

In my experience, this is correct. Recently I had a regular deduction appear 5 times on my account, but they were all 'Authorisation Only's After about 24 hours 4 disappeared and only one went through. |

Something's going on...a company I bought from earlier this year sent me an email several weeks ago inviting me to join a club where, for $30.00 a month, they would keep me up to date with 'special buys' and stuff. I deleted the email.
I received another email on Monday thanking me for joining the 'club' and telling me that my $30.00 had been received. I replied that I had not authorised any payment and that I expected my membership to be cancelled and a refund issued. Got a call on Tuesday asking if I wanted a refund or store credit. I was still being polite so I said refund. OK they said, we'll process it. Couple of hours later I got a call from a sales person from the same company offering to tell me about their current specials. I stopped being polite. Awaiting the refund...and looking to see who I can report this to. |

Cops won’t care about $30. . eSafetyOffice?
Shame them on Twitter. Did they REALLY get $30 out of an account? Complain to the bank? |

Interesting. I think you’ve handled this situation (I personally think it IS a scam) well. With my situation.... and given I’m such a cynic these days I think there’s something else going on. I was reflecting on it overnight trying to work out if it’s a subversive way of quietly obtaining short term funds. My theory in essence : Alleged glitches/mistakes which take days/weeks to resolve are about missing amounts of money. Yes? IF this happens across a multinational corporation’s customer base these little amounts of missing money add up to a massive amount of money. Let’s give these little amounts the value x. Let’s give that massive amount of money the value X. The corporation takes X and invests X into the short term money market. Interest rates here are amazing ESPECIALLY if the amount invested is over a certain tier/level. The resultant funds are released within say a week with interest ie profit. Let’s call profit P. After let’s say a week ... the multinational corporation will receive X + P deposited back into its account. That corporation then SLOWLY gives back the little amounts of x within X (most likely to ensure cash flow etc) and those customers who receive their missing $x are so busy being thankful/grateful/relieved that they finally have their money back that they take it no further. Meantime the multinational corporation has walked away with P <— interest/profit. P could be a million dollars. What do others think? You probably think I’m a conspiracy theorist now 😂🤣😆 |

Thanks Monk. I'll start with the bank but there should be some regulatory authority to oversee these things. And it's only $30 but that's every month and how many others are they targetting? |

Maybe not… but….it’s the tip of an iceberg, one or two complaints may not get much attention, then more complaints come in and it will warrant time on an investigation. The way it happened for this to happen, some marketing deceit that really puzzles me how they got into the account details to debit $30 a month. |

Title: Re: Being charged TWICE for 1 debit card transaction Post by chimera on Aug 25th, 2023 at 1:47pm
So they must have set up a dodgy card screen which gives them access. That's how overseas online fraud-sales are done using a cheap offer to catch people's details. I cancelled my card in time but got a threatening phone call when they couldn't use it.

Title: Re: Being charged TWICE for 1 debit card transaction Post by Sophia on Aug 25th, 2023 at 1:54pm What never ceases to amaze me… whenever there’s a glitch it’s always in their favour! Overcharging…. Items on special marked down but in their check out computer not noted. I have to read my receipt every time before I leave to make sure it’s all correct. It’s a lifelong habit to check and keep all receipts. I’m astounded when I’m asked at a checkout “would you like a receipt?” Of course I do! And I explain it like this - if they don’t ask me if I want receipt… “Can I have a receipt please as I do monthly checks against my credit card” We cannot reply on our memory if we can remember odd amounts or odd trading names and check our card account to wonder if it’s us that did spend that…or a glitch I’m getting good at avoiding (maybe paranoid) with anything that involves marketing. I get phone calls from unknown numbers, I look at it and can’t find the courage to answer it anymore. I think, if it’s important, they can leave a message. But they never do. I’ve gotten texts from Telstra or supposed to be for feedback but I won’t do it. If anyone wants some info… it has to be face to face instore or if I ring them myself. Be interesting to see how that double charge of Lisa’s going, and Felon’s $30 hopeful refund. |

I have been double charged for single transactions. I just deal with the problem through either the bank or the business. I think the real question here that should be asked is: "How many bottles of Pantene did Lisa accidentally buy because she was too angry to think straight?" |

The message from the hacking news is that the scammers are ahead of the institutions. Which is incredible when companies and the gov have the resources of experts. Are company execs just too out of date and lazy?

Title: Re: Being charged TWICE for 1 debit card transaction Post by Lisa Jones on Aug 26th, 2023 at 8:14am
Ok
1. As of this morning the double charge is still showing up in my online bank statement. 2. My bank has been contacted and they’ve emailed me the next steps in THE PROCESS. Get this : I now need to complete an online Fraudulent Transaction form and NAME Big W as the organisation responsible for said fraud. Upon submission of this online form my bank’s fraud investigation team will then act on my behalf (initiate another set of procedures) to help get my money back into my account. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. All I did was go shopping. I always do a Big W online shop. Nothing about my routine wrt online shopping has changed. |

Meantime ....
https://au.yahoo.com/news/woolworths-shoppers-rage-as-major-change-rolls-out-in-supermarkets-051434928.html The brand is definitely heading in the wrong direction. It’s effectively fining customers with revolting penalties IF they refuse to join their rewards program. You invite people NOT force them. Oh well ... just another thing I’ll have to blow them up about I guess. |

I was going to ask what the latest update was? It’s been a week hasn’t it? You wrote earlier big w blamed the bank. Sounds like passing the buck as they all do. What did the bank say? I remembered something … back in the 1980s we had a home loan and I noted the bank charged us an extra $3,000 I phoned them. I’m just a young mum with a toddler and baby right? The arrogant male bank manager poo pooed me saying the banks don’t make those mistakes. I was on the phone and my face went red with anger and I went dead silent. I hung up. An hour later he called back and quickly says I was right and it will be reversed. Then he hung up with no apology. Since that day, as a seemingly dumb young mum as I was perceived, I have kept an even closer eagle eye on all transactions! I keep all receipts! I check supermarket dockets and many times not given the specials advertised and charged full whack. My job in past was secretarial and accounts. Of course I’m looking at the maths and figures. I was not a dumb mum that knew nothing to speak up against a bank. Money talks and bs walks! I shudder to think and it bothers me how many people including elderly or unwell that are ripped off without knowing to counteract it. The big bank$ and big corp$ that have increa$ing billion$ profit$ annually say$ it all. |

Title: Re: Being charged TWICE for 1 debit card transaction Post by Lisa Jones on Aug 30th, 2023 at 2:36pm
Ok
I’ve JUST checked my online bank a/c. Nothing has happened. I did take screenshots of all my online chats so I’ll use those as evidence to contact someone at General Manager level via email. When it comes to these types of emails I go for maximum impact. So of course I will have to refer to certain words like : Media A Current Affair It’s not about the money now (which is around $120)... it’s the principle. If these billion dollar money making multi national corporations are doing this to me then my oath I know they’re doing it to others. I have no idea where my email will end up going within BigW but I do have the necessary email addresses which will put this matter on TV IF necessary. I honestly suspect there’s a rort going on involving customer money which has been and still is falsely explained away under the convenient blanket term “computer glitches” and said money is randomly chosen across a huge customer base (which this brand has). The cumulative resultant total of this process is then invested in the short term money market for up to 7 days which gives the brand a huge profit in interest. I’m no conspiracy theorist but I can sense a rort in all this. |
