As a replacement for a Windows desktop tower.
Thoughts? Or as the jargon goes nowadays - insights? |

Go for it. I own 2 Mac Mini M1 for my business along with a MacBook Air M1 and have run the older versions of the Mac Mini for many, many years. You will not be disappointed.

Ta. How would it compare to compact Windows desktops? All my other devices - phones, pads - are Windows/Android. I sense that moving to Mac Mini would be the first step to a complete transitioning ( :D :D) to Apple platforms. Wouldn't mind but cant be fagged to relearn some idiosynchratic techy tricks and couldnt stand some glitchy incompatibilities. |

In spite of having the above Apple devices, and keeping older Macbooks and Mac Minis around, unused, and owning an older iPad I still use, I do not own an iPhone because I don't think they are worth the money. I am okay with my Pixel 5. Nor do I have an Apple Watch. Analog for me. Don't worry about the transition from Windows to Mac - it is 2023. |

Yup I have an Mac Mini M—the M indicating it has Apple’s RISC processor.
I too have a MacAir laptop, also M. The RISC chips here mean long battery life and low heat production. I would say both have the M2 chip now, much faster than an Intel processor. |

My M1 Macbook never overheats. Can't say that for the predecessors at all. |

The inbuilt speaker on the MacMini is doing a lousy job of playing HMS Pinafore.

Supplementary Qs: 1. What software is preloaded on Macs? Or do I have to buy it all separately? 2. What happens to files saved on external storage from previo ut s Windows computers? |

You get some basic software included:
• spreadsheet • text processor • simple word processor/page layout • software to manage photos—arrange into albums, projects etc • image processing software, I use to crop and resize photos, can add text etc • calculator with quite a few options, show the virtual tape, scientific-programming and reverse polish notation etc • browser/email program, password manager |
