Irish singer and activist Sinéad O'Connor has died at the age of 56.

The singer's family announced the news "with great sadness", adding that "her family and friends are devastated".

She was best known for her single Nothing Compares 2 U, released in 1990, which reached number one and brought her worldwide fame.

Taoiseach (Irish PM) Leo Varadkar said her music "was loved around the world and her talent was unmatched and beyond compare".

Irish President Michael D Higgins praised O'Connor's "authenticity" as well as her "beautiful, unique voice".

"What Ireland has lost at such a relatively young age is one of our greatest and most gifted composers, songwriters and performers of recent decades, one who had a unique talent and extraordinary connection with her audience, all of whom held such love and warmth for her," he said.

She converted to Islam in 2018.
Her real name was Shuhada Sadaqat.

I always considered her conversation to islam as part of her mental illness/fixation with religion

I've known people who've converted from Anglican to Catholic - for reasons that they think it has more certainties... not much difference between the two actually.... but then my father was a Prod and my mother a Cat'lic and one set of great-greats were Jews, and some Jacobites - so I'm way beyond redemption..

Obsession with religion is it... just another form of madness if you ask me, plus a ship load of 'looka me' - I've converted to Islam .... all madness.

Don't feel that you're immune.
Every one of us is only one life crisis away from mental problems
which can tip anyone over the edge.
Consider people in Australia who had their homes washed away by floods -
I wonder how they are coping now?

Her 17 year old son, Shane, killed himself last year after escaping hospital while there on suicide watch.

Even without a lifetime of trauma and mental illness, that would be tough to live with.

I worked with an Irish woman back in the 1980s, she was unusual because she admitted to knowing Sinead O'Connor, which apparently wasn't that unusual if you moved in the same circles, at a party in Dublin.  She described Sinaed as a, "a bit of a loony," even then. ::) ::)

Winehouse was a drug addict and alcohol abuser. Winehouse died with a BAC reading of 0.416. I don't know what was the cause of O'Connor's death. However, I would be sure that it is something else.

Police say the death of Sinéad O'Connor is not being treated as suspicious
following the discovery of her body on Wednesday.

The singer and activist, best known for the song Nothing Compares 2 U, died age 56 at her home in London.

Police say she was found "unresponsive" and "pronounced dead at the scene" at 11:18 BST and her family had been notified.

"A file will be prepared for the coroner," officers added.

An inquest has not been opened, and no medical cause of death has been given.

An autopsy will be conducted with results taking up to "several weeks", London Inner South Coroner's Court has said.

Her family announced the news on Wednesday evening "with great sadness", saying "her family and friends are devastated".

Mothers! Where are they? I keep coming back to that! Our society is hell bent on sub contracting the motherhood function out from the get go.

Our children need the guidance and care and the opportunity to share/vent etc. But where are their mothers? Working full time then coming home with SFA time/energy for the children which they’ve brought into this nasty and unsafe hell hole we call life.

Note : Some children have unfortunately lost their mothers at a young age. Such children do suffer emotionally etc as a result of that. If only we appreciated the role of women and motherhood in particular a little more.

It was actually scotch day today. I was considering going and buying a 1L bottle of scotch for $57. But, I figured that I need to earn the right to drink again. Besides, I had car repairs, new tv and blu ray players to buy, among other things that will eat up my time that I cannot drink for a long time.

A BAC of 0.416 would have me inebriated. But, as long as I was not on the drugs, I would be okay.

I ventured a little treatise the other day about the Absent Parent Syndrome - what used to be almost exclusively the Absent Father Syndrome but now crosses gender barriers..... and the effect this had on the socialisation of children - who pick this up primarily by a form of osmosis from their environment - and this new phenomenon of Absent Parents (both) lead to that being primarily in the hands of peer group and pre-school etc.  This also appears to me to lead to this push by schools - as the new primary caregiver - to actually control such things as medicines and treatments for kids - dangerous territory.  The school knows the kid better than parents - and thus feels entitled to send them to gender affirmation and such and feels no obligation to even advise parents. Note that the issue of transgenderism revolves around the concept of gender 'identity' - not hard fact. 'Identifying' (see Tracey Chapman - thought I could be someone) is at the very core of this approach to life and socialisation.

Also I mooted that this could be an underlying cause in the incredible rise of borderline.... alongside television, iPhones and video games and such.  Strawberry Fields where nothing is real....

Very complex - but at the end of it I mooted that perhaps this had something to do with the desperate search for identity in so many young ones, which leads to grabbing at belief systems such as transgenderism, but which must include religion to some extent, hence the grabbing by some at 'converting to Islam' etc - both attention seeking and finding some identity in life.

Such grabbing at Islam as an identifier is more common among young Black people from and in a very destabilised environment and thus with a greater need to 'identify' - hence the local grown 'Black Muslims'.  Some could grab at Catholicism for the same kind of reasons - the apparent certainties of a very rigid and structured religion.

As I said - a complex subject.  There's a Ph.D in it for someone who could get the funding... a professorship much more valid than Pascoe anyway....

Ain't I an iconoclastic bastard?

A lot of research has definitely been undertaken regarding children who have not had a mother (on account of death etc). Even regarding children who have had mothers but these mothers were never really there to support them in life from the get go. These children face complex challenges in life wrt relationships (professional/personal). But that’s another topic of course.

Getting back to the topic ...

RIP 🌹

As I've explained to you before, Booby, that's code for 'suicide'.

The poor woman was abused as a child, had mental health issues as an adult, and lost her teenage son to suicide about 18 months ago.

There's only so much a person can take.

Anyway, here's something I thought I'd never say: this clip from Piers Morgan is worth watching.
