Title: You walk onto a plane & see THIS
Post by Violet Crumble on Jul 20th, 2023 at 4:19am
I don't think I'd say much anything to her not wanting to offend her. But this is a very real, daily scenario. Not only is her fat spilling over into the next seat, but her little breather is also resting on the seat. In this case, maybe she purchased two seats in which case, it shouldn't be an issue. But can you imagine if you're that poor person stuck in the middle seat? And you can't even rest your arms on the armrests because of this piece of lard and maybe the other person hogging the armrests on that side? Jesus, flying is becoming a literal nightmare.

https://twitter.com/ElonMuskAOC/status/1681134737971355648

Last year I was waiting for a flight and saw a massively fat couple traveling together and said a silent prayer hoping I would not have to sit next to them. And my prayers were answered!

a sad reflection on the manipulation by big food that we have to accept obesity as the new norm

call someone fat on social media and they will close your account, such is the power of coca cola, kelloggs and mcdonalds (major advertisors on all platforms)

Well, I guess it's difficult to comment appropriately
considering that we know nothing of this woman's
medical background or possible chronic condition—or
whether she paid for two seats (which I'm guessing
she did, under commercial airlines policy).

Whatever, this type of public "fat shaming" is
offensive and could easily cause this unfortunate
woman a lot of unnecessary mental distress, which
could exacerbate an already fragile mindset.

I'm also sorry that you've chosen to share in her
bullying by further exposing this gratuitous image,
Violet Crumble, (ironically with 58g sugar per 100g in
every bar).  And to describe her as "a piece of lard"
only piles further offence on your already bigoted
opinion.

You might like to check out this Wikipedia entry:
Social stigma of obesity in order to correct your
ill-informed, stigmatising opinion.

You do know don't you that your sort of fat-shaming
aligns very closely with racism—that is unreasonable
dislike or aversion to "the other"?   Or maybe you don't?

—And of course, our resident health guru Aquascoot
has to get his 2 cents-worth in about his favourite
old warhorse;  overweight, slack and idle people
eating to much convenience food.    He even opines
that obesity can exacerbate contracting COVID!   LOL.

The airlines should have super large seats for fat people and
those people should pay double the price for their air ticket.

Just take the total weight of passenger plus their bags and have extra wide seats for fatties which cost extra.

I guess it's difficult to fairly judge the physical size
and mass of somebody—particularly—on an airline,
because of the implications of potentially invasive
questioning and/or a breach of a person's right to
privacy.

There are genuine medical causes in some cases for
obesity: Cushing’s Syndrome, hypothyroidism or
monogenic obesity for example.

So... can an airline booking agent ask specifically for
evidence of a medical condition?  Would that overrule
the personal rights of an overweight person?  At what
point would a person's weight trigger extra charges?

It's a tricky scenario.      8-)

I always wonder if these people are the size they are due to factors within their control or not. If the first I have no sympathy for them and don't believe any special accommodation need be made for them. If otherwise then there should be some allowances made for their condition.

Genetic conditions that CONTRIBUTE to obesity are extremely rare.

Even these rare genetic conditions don't CAUSE weight gain but mess with intake regulation which makes appetite control difficult. I have sympathy for genuine sufferers of that but the ball is in their court. Genes don't always mean destiny.

Take any obese person, limit their caloric intake to 800 calories per day and get them to walk for an hour and the weight will drop off.

99% of fat people are fat because of their own doing. Very rarely is it genetic.

They're greedy, arrogant and normally full of excuses as to why they are the way they are.
There's one hole in the head that causes obesity.
Most fat people never close that hole.
They either spew excuses out of it, or shovel shyte into it, but that hole never stops moving and it's why they are the way they are.

There's an estimated 1,800 to 2,000 people in
Australia suffering from Cushing's syndrome. More
than 40 people a year are newly diagnosed with
the condition.

Is that very rare?      You tell me.    ::)

From your own link Geoff :

Syndromic obesity

Obesity is sometimes part of a RARE but recognised syndrome characterised by cognitive delay, dysmorphic features and organ-specific abnormalities.

There’s no doubt that obesity results from poor and entrenched habits wrt diet and exercise.

Unfortunately this means esp after some time...that their mindset is enslaved also. In fact obesity affected individuals often have psychological/psychiatric issues which manifest through their obesity. Unaddressed childhood abuse/trauma/neglect issues can be a primary causal factor.

As parents ... we must be on the look out at all times for any signs dysfunction in our children. Obesity is one such dysfunction and the inability to control food intake in general should ring alarm bells in any person who we interact with. I don’t think those alarm bells should be prompting us to denigrate such individuals. They deserve our pity and compassion as well as a kind word of encouragement to help them cautiously navigate their way out of the darkness of the cave they’re trapped in.

I refuse to be politically correct ESP when it comes to the issue of obesity. Obesity is NOT normal and it’s NOT healthy. People’s life expectancy and ability to live an independent life are at risk. They place themselves and others around them at risk of harm. All this ultimately costs the community (ie the tax payer) a lot of money to sort out. Our health system is already bankrupt compliments of the baby boomer/aging population phenomenon. The current unresolved Covid19 global pandemic has only magnified/intensified the lack of funding which SHOULD be available but isn’t.

Take Away Point 👉 We who are Gen X, Y etc MUST undertake all due diligence to ensure we remain HEALTHY, ABLE and OUT of ALL hospital systems. That must be our priority if we are to be part of the solution and not the problem.

If you have a medical condition that prevents you from running, that would account for not being in optimum physical condition. But you would not be 50kg overweight because of it.

You're 99% correct.

Burning energy to to stay lean doesn't work in as simple energy in/out.
Exercise, being fit, having lean muscle makes your body healthy which helps you to be lean but if you had to do one thing to lose weight, it would be to control intake.

Sure that's rare.
Less than 1% of our population.

My observation is from pounding the pavement.
Nearly everyone I pass is inflamed.
Couple that with every second person having a "gut" to some extent.
I'd guarantee that the majority of those people have done that to themselves.
Greedy eating habits.
Lazy folk that spend stupid amounts of hours in front of TV or computer.
Tipping copious amounts of alcohol down their hole.
Then denying they are the problem and blaming stress etc.

I still stand by my statement. Majority of fatties are fat because of their own doing.
It's a western culture enriched problem.

I weighed 80kg in the year 2006. I put on weight to be about 128kg by 2014. The difference between the two years was diet and exercise in 2006. Fast food, alcohol and a lack of exercise got me to 128kg 8 years later.

I walk out of the male toilets at the Stockland shopping centre and I see this full length mirror before the exit. I kid myself when I leave the house thinking that I am relatively fit. But, passing that full length mirror at the shopping centre, I know that I should not have had that fast food meal a few minutes beforehand.

My weightloss goal would be to get down to 90kg by September so that I can join the university gym and put on some muscle for a 6 month membership.

The other day, I had foot strain for carrying too much weight in my pack during my resistance training walk. I limped around all day and was a little sore the day after. But, generally, the foot soreness comes down to diet and your ability to recover with the proper nutritional intake.

Whilst I see people with physical impairment being overweight or obese, there are those that can maintain a proper body weight simply by being moderately active and eating a proper diet.

Agree.

We've traded good health, for the easy life.

I get so frustrated when I see a pair of obese parents with a young child that is also well over weight.
That is a form of child abuse imo.
Then we have these obese you tubers trying to glorify their own sickness and getting applauded for doing so.
Society should instead be truthful with them, not encouraging them.

I know some overweight adults who fully understand what they're doing and decided they prefer to guzzle the food and wine. All power to them if they enjoy it and accept the consequences and don't lay blame anywhere else.

But people with overweight kids, unacceptable.

This happened today. My 16 year old girl was a very good cross country runner (she's parked all competitive sport for years 11/12) and my 6 year old boy wants to be better at everything than her, so I've been doing proper running training, and now doing a 2k twice a week together. Today we were at an oval that's also a busy dog park, so many people were giving nods of approval and little cheers seeing a little bloke out running laps.

That makes it so obvious that exercise is universally understood to be such worthy part of life.

I think there’s a more common problematic issue with plane seats… for taller people… leg room.
My hubby is 5’11”tall and in planes, his knees are crammed up against front seat!
He’s onk 83 kgs and it’s not width required, it’s length.
The airline companies are trying to squeeze in more passenger seats by shortening leg room space!
And… if you want more leg room … you have to pay extra!

We once travelled business class to Singapore… there was a fantastic special of $800 each instead of $400 cattle class…. So I grabbed the chance to tick it off bucket list.
I loved the noise cancelling earphones…. Couldn’t hear the plane engine at all!
And as much Baileys on ice as I wanted  :)

Apart from that … the cattle class seat space is atrocious!
The worst (and last time I travelled international) with China Eastern in 2019 (before corona) was the worst flight, our morning plane was late and cancelled us out to get next flight 8 pm and I was stuck in the middle aisle of 4 seats and my ankles just blew up! So late in the day then 14 hour flight… I had never had such swollen ankles and I was frightened… I got out of seat walking up and down aisles and then went and stood in kitchen at 2am….just mortified and tired wishing I could sleep but worried instead about this DVT…..then a airline hostess came to get some ice…lightbulb moment…. I had an idea… I asked if I could have ice in 2 plastic bags.
He agreed and I went back to seat, put ice on ankles, and swelling eased!
Now for anyone else my ankles may not have looked swollen because I have very skinny ankles… but it felt like they were ballooned and about to burst.
As for arm rests… it’s only one shared between 2 people … it’s hard to keep arms and elbows pushed inwards towards body, trying to maintain your own space, there are bigger or taller people and it must deter them from travelling on planes much due to space/comfort issues.
Anyway, elbows are the least of my worries now I know my ankles could play havoc with me!

utter crap

https://shemightbe.co.uk/plus-size-women-throughout-history-women-renaissance/

the only reason you see more of it after WWII is because before that going hungry was the norm for many people.

Next you'll be arguing those starving from famine in Africa are the norm  :D :D :D :D

There was a study once that showed that if your parents or grandparents went through prolonged periods of hunger (WWI and WWII) your cells 'remember' that period of starvation and store fat in preparation for the next period of starvation. THAT IS GENETICS.

Don’t forget the artificial flavours/preservatives in foods we buy from the supermarket. Even the fruit and veg is chemically treated. And we bring all this home to cook food for our family thinking it’s so much healthier.

I try hard to grow as much as I can as nothing beats home grown organic fruit and vegetables. Ohhhh it’s difficult to mention stuff like this as I still miss mum. She taught me everything about growing fruit and veges. Mum’s entire backyard was her farmlet and we loved helping her turn it into a garden of Eden. Free of pesticides. All natural.

We just need to go back to those days. But no one understands/wants to understand such a message.

Hi Lisa,
even 15 years ago and it's worse now:

https://www.cyclehelmets.org/1193.html

Australia: the world's fattest nation
A public health crisis

Australia is now the fattest nation in the world, with more than 9 million adults rated as obese or overweight. (Stewart et al, 2008)

It is predicted that this will lead to 123,000 premature deaths over the next two decades and that an extra 700,000 people will be admitted to hospital for heart attacks, strokes and blood clots caused by excess weight. The costs will exceed AUD 6 billion.

4 million Australians – 26% of the adult population – are now obese and a further 5 million overweight. But among the middle-aged population, who are most at risk of premature death,
72% of men and 58% of women are obese or overweight.

The grim picture is blamed on a boom in fast food and a decline in physical activity. It is said to be a public health crisis with no parallel.

If OzPol was a rose garden, my god how it would bloom!

But the high fructose corn syrups have a LOT to answer for.

Buying so OJ at the supermarket? It will be sweetened by. . . .high fructose corn syrup

Making a packet soup for lunch at work? It contains. . .high fructose corn syrup

And so it goes.

Labor saving devices—an electric iron such an improvement over sad or “all day” kerosene burning smoothing irons

The vacuum cleaner—so much easier than rolling up the rugs to beat them outside etc.

All fine—I collect antiques but I would not want to live in those eras—but the time freed up is spent watching TV etc. So many do not have the intellectual resources to make effective use of the time saved, so watch daytime TV {shudder} eating Cadbury’s Roses sweetened with. . .high fructose corn syrups!

The pilot would have to trim the ailerons for a big heavy fat chick like her ... sitting in a window seat, the plane would roll over on it's axis. She needs to be seated over the plane's center of gravity so the pilot have less work to do

If you don't see anything wrong with that, god help you.

But hear in mind, these are the kids he takes out bullying ... so they know full well what daddy expects of them.

Still overwhelmingly excessive.

But then again, i expect your kids are quite conditioned into line.

Only a morbidly obese lardcart bound person with zero concept of physical activity would think 2km is excessive. 2km with him is a 15 minute jog in about zone 2, which means he can talk comfortably the whole way.

In comparison, his U6 soccer games are 2 x 20m with no subs.

As I said, a sporty family.

Very balanced. My daughter was naturally sporty but also academic and has turned into a very talented pianist. It will be interesting to see how the 6 year old turns out. He certainly doesn't have the piano gift but art is his thing and he seems to do well at sport.

Anyway, only Mothra could turn being physically active into a negative.

For a 6 year old so he can be in competition with his sister?

I suppose given the family past time of bullying people who don't look like you, the kid's desperate to fit in.

"You walk onto the plane and you see her sitting next to your seat.

What do you say?"

I would say "Well done for still wearing a high quality mask during this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic".

Especially on a plane where the risk of getting Covid and/or the flu while you're crammed inside a sealed metal tube for hours with coughing and sneezing maskless hordes would be extremely high if you weren't wearing a mask.

He’s onk 83 kgs and it’s not width required, it’s length.

The first and last time I got onto a plane was a 1 hour ride on those domestic planes to Brisbane. There was not a great deal of leg room. But, even if I was 20cm taller (I happen to be 177cm tall), I still would have been comfortable with my seating arrangements. And had the plane ride been 5 hours to anywhere around Australia, I still would have had fun.

You might be confusing genetic inheritance of fat cells with immune system inheritance. Even though there is a genetic inheritance of immune systems passing on stronger immunity if your parents were exposed to a disease in the years before you are born, you will still need to develop your own immunity, even with a boost from the genetics.

You are still born with a certain number of fat cells. And the body develops fat cells during the process of storing fat as a result of not having used it up. It is your own experiences of diet that determine how fat you get. If you eat a modest diet and exercise modestly, you are not going to get obese/plus-sized as a result of what your parents went through in Auschwitz.

Jeff Cohen was the fat kid "Chunk" in the movie "The Goonies". He is not fat anymore. Weird Al Yankovic featured super morbidly obese people in the music video "Fat". Some talk shows mentioned obesity as a growing epidemic.
But, the amount of junk food on offer today and the more sedentary lifestyle since the mid-1990s has seen obesity levels skyrocket.

I had to look that up to see what you are talking about. Given that fat people have been in history right through to today, it is a given that she was talking about the epidemic of obese people starting after WW2. But, even that was not the case until about 40 years ago.

Back in the 1980s, we learned that obese people in history tended to be the owners of manufacturer operations that ate large to a point that they developed indigestion. Being stout was a status symbol of wealth. Though pictures of such people were rare in the 1800s and early 1900s.

There's one hole in the head that causes obesity.
Most fat people never close that hole.
They either spew excuses out of it, or shovel shyte into it, but that hole never stops moving and it's why they are the way they are.

Absolute unmitigated bullshit.

My parents born 1924 & 1930 - my siblings, myself all boomers & our families have paid for private health cover all our lives.

And since Medicare was introduced when we worked we paid the rellevant levy for those who do not have private cover.

We are one of many many who have done the same.

Don't be a total idiot by joining the clowns blaming boomers for all the ills of the world.

Sad thing about a lot in your generation is they are always looking to blame others for their own shortcomings .... and looking for an emotional crutch like alcohol or drugs.

That could be so. When I studied art, thinking of Rubens and voluptuous forms were painted by him, back in the 1600s, perhaps it was a desired way to be considering many were starved individuals and boney?
The filled out body formed a sense of wealth, being well off and no lack of food.

I recall the different earlier cultures of voluptuous beauties like Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren etc called sex symbols and then…. the skinny culture of Twiggy came along.
I wonder if this is when anorexia/bulimea started to become a social problem?
Certainly self consciousness.
It’s taken a long time for females in particular, to find acceptance of their body size and shape.
I found it comforting to see younger lasses of my kids gen (millennials) that don’t feel the need to be ashamed of their bodies, they are more confident as they accept themselves, and thank goodness as I envy that as I wish I could’ve felt better about myself when I was a teen as a size 12. Would’ve prefrrred to be a size 8! I did get down to a 10 and still felt fat. Fashion clothes back then were unforgiving with no give, all non stretch fabric with zippers and buttons. Jeans were not as comfy stretch as they are now. Used to lay on bed and pull jeans up to zipper it shut. So uncomfortable they were but it’s all that was availed to us. I used to buy Amco jeans. Anyone remember them? Then Staggers came along.
Now there are fab beautiful fashions in many plus sizes for “Rubenesque” bods. Fashion is definitely more comfortable and easy wear.

A woman in prehistoric Europe would have been incredibly fertile with that much fat, and fertility was much prized. That Venus must have been a symbol of fertility & life. And some researchers speculate that women held a very different place in society prior to agriculture. Have you read the book Sex at Dawn?

The women of whom you speak were an excellent balance - not balloons... balloons are the latest trend.

What would you say you are, Lisa? 5ft 10in, 60kg, skinny waist, muscular calves, and D-cup breasts?

I don't have to imagine it. I lived in a student accommodation house 22 years ago. My housemate was a 170kg couch potato. In the summer months, right into mid-Autumn, he would run the air conditioning full on for cold, because his weight was so much insulation that he was always hot. The couch he would lay on was practically blackened cushions after he moved out. The bedroom he stayed in smelled like moulded cheese and whatever foul smell for months after he moved out. The week before I moved out to another unit, I sprayed his old room for about 10 seconds with some Glen20, then I closed his door to clean up the rest of the house. On my final day there, I checked all the bedrooms for anything left behind. Apart from the faint smell of the Glen20, the room of the fat arse was barely any better. I left the door of his bedroom open from then onwards, and I gave that room another 20 seconds of Glen20 spraying, hoping that this would be enough to minimise the smell for the next tenant.

The thing is, he managed to lose about 80kg over a 2 year period. So, he was capable of losing weight. He just did not want to when he was a teenager.

Yes, but there's fast food and there's fast shyte disguised as food.

For example, a traditional 'Greek cafe' hamburger is, apart from the fat content of the
beef patty, basically a fairly healthy meal with its ingredients being both varied and
fresh, and unadulterated by being over-processed. Ingredients can be added (bacon
egg etc) or deleted (beetroot or tomato) if desired.

A well-made hamburger is - and should be - essentially a fairly nutritious and well-rounded
small meal, but in a bun instead of on a plate. AND - it's made fresh when you order it, it
hasn't been sitting in a bain-marie for God knows how long, so there's that.

Compare that with the usual offerings from Maccas, Hungry Jack's or KFC - all of which
have the living crap processed out of them, a limited choice of ingredients, and lashings
of sugar-filled mayo. Not to mention the chemical additives and preservatives. And then
there's the hard-sell to upsize or buy 'side dishes' and drinks - all of it loaded to the
point of overflow, as Monk mentioned earlier, with high-fructose corn syrup and salt.

I have personally experienced KFC thst you could literally wring the oil out of.

Yes - as an experiment put KFC in an oven for 30 minutes
with a drip tray underneath it and see how much oil and grease comes out of it.   :o

Why would they?

Being overweight doesn't mean they're incapacitated and can't shower or perform
other body-hygiene tasks. It doesn't mean they can't or won't use deodorant or
perfume, or wear clean clothes.

Are you capable of forming a single opinion any particular group without

I'd rather find myself sitting next to an overweight bloke or woman, than some

You might have missed the post where I mentioned that I lived for months with a super morbidly obese person. The smell coming from him was enough to put me off staying there for a while longer than sleeping in the same house.

Fat stinks. It will go through your pores when you sweat and will stain your clothing. Three showers a day and body deodorant applications will only mitigate the stink your body produces. Lean body mass will reduce your body odour remarkably.

I could not imagine the fried chicken, hamburgers, sugary drinks, alcohol to smell all that good on the way out during a bowel movement. Nor would the smell of it coming from your breath or being sweated out during your exertions to be all that appealing to others.

Remember, I have been going on and on about how I was around 130kg. I did not smell all that good, even though I showered twice a day. I went without a shower all yesterday, and I smelled better than I did when I was 25kg heavier and showering twice a day. One of the reasons behind smelling better now than I did 9 years ago was the fact that I can shower more efficiently these days. Imagine trying to scrub a body that has as many fat folds as I did. The sweat, bacteria build up, etc., was something that I could have done without, had I dieted and exercised back then.

I can imagine that the super obese woman on that plane would spend 99% of her waking moments dealing with her fat folds just growing bacteria that does not get washed away very easily. Deodorants are one thing. But they are a temporary fix. I have about 10 cans of deodorant in my bathroom. I apply deodorant every time I prepare to go out. But, I am going to stink like hell unless I improve my diet and lose the excess skin.

On a flight of any decent length, those folds would be festering with bacteria and fungus, which stinks.

Excessive adipose tissue, impaired mobility, malnourishment, and skinfolds all contribute to skin issues in adults who are obese. Excessive adipose tissue has a poor blood supply, leading to inadequate oxygenation, which can impair wound healing. Adipose tissue also insulates the body, trapping heat, increasing patients’ core temperatures, and causing excessive sweating. The result is increased moisture, especially in skinfolds, that leads to fungal or bacterial growth.

2) use the hostess seat at the back
3) bang on the pilot's door and shout loudly.
