Title: Starlink
Post by Jovial Monk on Jun 25th, 2023 at 11:06pm
I was very unhappy with NBN Satellite.

Telstra ADSL is pathetic and they are making no effort to improves it.

So I am thinking of signing on to Starlink. Bandwidth of 90-250Mbps sounds OK to me!

Will you be paying for this service using the $60 you stole from Aussie?

I got Starlink a week ago. I live in a rural area and my fixed wireless that was reasonable a few years ago has got ever slower and less reliable as more people come on the network. Add this to the fact that Telstra (the only real option I had in my area) are putting up their prices made me decide to bite the bullet and take advantage of the Starlink rural discount of $199 as opposed to the usual $900 start up cost.

So far it has been excellent. Speed tests have shown a marked improvement - Telstra down 74, up  9 ping 77. Starlink  down 148 up 11 ping 39.  The difference has been very noticeable. No trouble with this forum for example where I used to have issues before.

I will give it another week or two to make sure all is in order then I will ditch Telstra altogether.

Cool, nice to hear!

I live in a small township, satellite is the only NBN option. This is cruel, saving a bit of money and reducing bandwidth and data allowance for truly isolated homes!

ADSL was like 13:1. Only good thing—unlimited data whereas I used up the satellite data allowance in 2 weeks!

OK, placed the order for Starlink. Decent internet at last!

I've got a few customers who've joined up to it now. They seem to like it.

Cool! It is $50/month dearer than Telstra ADSL but it looks like real internet.

Are you that pressed for time? My download speed is 27.6 Mbps. The upload 4.79 Mbps. I can multitask many programs and internet pages just with that amount of download speed.

Title: Re: Starlink
Post by Jovial Monk on Jun 28th, 2023 at 6:30am
That is rather more than I get!

Your download speed is twice mine and your upload speed is WAY faster!

If I got 25:5 I probably would not want to change.

Heh, talking to NBN Co and Helstra on Twitter.

NBN Co announced this big improvement of satellite: 25:5. Gees, they must think it is 1923 npot 2023!

I am LOVING Starlink!

I get over 200Mbps down and 13–25mbps up.

More upload than I used to have dowload!

Post by UnSubRocky on Jul 16th, 2023 at 5:44am
How much does that cost you?

Title: Re: Starlink
Post by Jovial Monk on Jul 16th, 2023 at 7:23am
$135/month

Pfft! I don't even pay that amount for home, mobile and internet expenses per month with Telstra.

ADSL wasn’t fast enough, especially uploading stuff but visible delays in downloading as well. NBN Satellite data plans allowed pitifully little data to be up/downloaded.

This has a nice speed. If reliable 25:5 with unlimited data had been available I would probably not have moved. If the iPhone had been a bit faster I would likely just hang off of that but it is slow—real problems with video conferencing that I do weekly.

You are doing 200Mbps download. But, for what? It is like having a car that can do 200km/h easily, but the speed limit says 110km at most. What is the big hurry?

Title: Re: Starlink

Large files like gigabytes worth? Downloading movies?

Other stuff but I buy the odd movie.

The starlink speed, over 200:20 is real.

As a test, while a YouTube of Mozart was playing I launched YouTube in another tab I downloaded and watched a video and it seemed to download and play at normal speed so the Starlink bandwidth is real.

Title: Re: Starlink
Post by UnSubRocky on Jul 25th, 2023 at 2:30pm
I launched about 10 youtube videos of the same "Bohemian Rhapsody" song to make an echoing orchestral sound of the song. My computer could play all of the videos with no problem with my Telstra ADSL connection. You don't need a super fast connection to do that.

Title: Re: Starlink
Post by Jovial Monk on Jul 25th, 2023 at 3:47pm
I couldn’t do it with my ADSL.

It wasn’t that my needs are huge, it was the service that was too slow, especially the upload.

My yankee home brew buddies must have gigabit download, looking at the specs for their up/download. But Spacelink will do so far.

Most of the past I couldn't get even 1mbps and it cost about $80 American so I dropped it and finally just tethered my phone for WiFi. Now I have 5G and pay $50 per month all taxes and fees included plus AppleTV+ for free at 200mbps down and about 35 up. Nothing was available until about two years ago except the old phone line internet. I would definitely consider Starlink if none of my new options were unavailable.

I like it still.

Mind you, Friday the receiver got moved and fixed to the roof. The receiver should point to the south in the Southern Hemisphere but I noticed on Saturday morning it was pointing north and the Jitsi chat that afternoon was full of stops and me getting tossed out the chat.

It has now worked out where it should be pointing and is back to 250/25.

You do get interruptions occasionally—I had to tether the computer to my phone. Took the dog for a 10 minute walk to the PO and back, Starlink working again.

Finally the NBN we should have had 5 years ago. Free flip to fibre here.

That's because they all shared the same buffered download. You DLed once and played it 10 times, not a bandwidth test by any means. Play 10 different videos at once all started at the same time.

My net speed is embarrassing, I have a crap TPG plan, but it rarely impacts what I do.

Yeah it's like the internet is on the same gigabit network as the house. One way of course. I've noticed that file sharing sites limit download bandwidth. The ones I usually find the fastest like mega/gofile/mediafire won't give the full bandwidth to one file. I can dl multiple files and they added on, so to speak, to the bandwidth allowed for one file. Basically I could not get anywhere near full GB from file share sites unless I did multiple files.

Torrented debian-12.2.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso   3809M and it was roughly 1.5mins but was 300Mbps there abouts.
