The car temp was showing 6deg when I drove 1stborn to school at 7, seem like it's a bit warmer now.

I'd love to experience that level of cold, but not the perpetual darkness they'd have this time of year.

Interesting fact.

"Dry ice" is actually solid, frozen carbon dioxide, which happens to sublimate, or turn to gas,
at a chilly -78.5 °C (-109.3°F)


So -
in Antarctica it gets cold enough to make dry ice out of the carbon dioxide in the air.   :o

Worked with a Russian guy from Siberia. One 2 degree day when I mentioned it was cold he said "this isn't cold where I am from you would go for a swim today and wear shorts and a tee shirt, Now when it gets to -30 degrees that is cold - don't go outside or you will die".

I also take the dog for a walk on the beach and have a swim in the winter. I don't like the water too warm anymore.

Also early winter the water isn't that cold. Water temp tends to lag air temp by several months. I find water temp is the lowest around November and it is still relatively warm up to maybe July August. This is of course influenced by water currents.

Coldest water I have been in was a Christmas day in the 1980's or 90's. Had christmas at Bondi and the water temp was 2 degrees. a cold current came up from the south, If you stepped into the water (40 degree day) it hurt and if up to your ankles your feet would be numb in 30 seconds. It was strange to be on Bondi beach on a 40 degree day with thousands of people on the beach and nobody in the water.

Not me -
I played soccer and I don't remember feeling cold till the game stopped -
then I had to put on a warm coat and get home for
a shower and a change of clothes.
Running creates a lot of internal heat - that's why you can even sweat in Winter.

Very frequently had a compulsory event after a game and a debrief on the game in some teams. nobody went home to shower on these days. I don't remember anyone ever going home to shower but I suspect it likely did happen.  You also had 3 nights of training when it was even colder and very stop start on occasion. We all did it so it wasn't unbearable but it was challenging.

We used to play soccer in local parks -
even in an adult team after I left school.
There were no showers or any facilities except a dunny I think.

You had to rush home to shower and change after the game.

My RC AC is all I use, and it keeps me warm as toast.

It's on now, set to 24, and it's very comfortable.

Nah, where I was today got to a sunny 12°C.

Pfft! It was 12°C at 7:30 this morning. Currently around 23 - 24°C here in Rockhampton. 9 to 14°C minimum temperatures for the next 6 days forecast. Maximums from 24 to 29°C for the same period.

No winter up here at the moment. Will have to wait for the cold front to come over next week and drop temperatures.

Minimum last night was 4°C.

The 12°C was the car thermometer.

There are two dogs, around a corner or two, not much more fur than Socks—sleep outside, on the veranda.

Lots of whippets at the lure coursing—they tropical dogas too? If so—why are so many Tassie dogs without the thick fur of a husky? Have not seen a husky yet.

Was on the beach today—Socks spent as much time in the water as out of it. You wouldn’t let your feet get wet

We've got under floor ducted and haven't used the gas for ages.
It takes 10 mins to get going then it's warm as toast.

Both my millennial kids know of him and do what he recommends. Swimming in cold water, certain breathing exercises etc.
He’s a real marvel and I do admire the guy! I might do tepid cool water after a hot shower but that’s it!
When I was younger… our school in mid winter took us kids to the coldest unheated pool in the whole world! It was high up in Olinda (where it snows) and that water was freeze balls temp!
Now I’m thinking it probably did us more good than we knew!

Nicest thing I have seen with seagulls was one night when prawning with my daughter there was a mother seagull swimming around with a brood of babies. The were seagulls but about 4 or 5 inches in size, they were the cutest little things. First time I have realised that I have never seen a baby seagull before. They obviously go out around midnight.

When we cruised the inside passage of Alaska, one excursion I booked was to see the sled dogs. We were given a ride on the sleds with them. They are so gorgeous! I went in amongst them to pat and talk to them, the trainers/owners were telling me their names  :)
We later went down the mountain terrain via 4WD truck to see the newly born puppies and were allowed to hold them! They spoke of the benefits for pups to be more social with humans and with other pups/dogs. I also learnt about the long distance sled dog competitions in Alaska.
I put on their big warm furry coat and gloves used in the comp and had a photo taken with an antique sled they had on display. I thoroughly enjoyed it all. Very educational.

The ocean is 17deg, big pool at icebergs qas 16 and the wading pool which sits in the shade was 13deg!

It’s cold here too. All heaters are ON and we’re wearing warm pjs and ugg boots. Our golden retriever is wearing warm clothes like this 👇

Some dogs shed continuously throughout their life, and others on a more seasonal or cyclical basis – this is known as moulting.

Golden Retrievers shed continuously. And I think that’s why they don’t have a thick coat. They also have longer thinner hair though compared to their 1st cousins - the Labradors.

Trust me ... these dogs SHED their fur non stop. I’m forever vacuuming and mopping. 😩😔

What can you do? They’re part of the family.

I know -
I knew an owner once who had his house covered in dog fur from his Golden Retrievers.
It was almost impossible to clean up properly.
They even shed fur in Winter.

It was close to 19 last week, today was 17. The big pool at Icebergs was 16 and the wading pool, which gets coldest was 13deg. I managed to stay in the 13deg pool for about 20 mins.

Deep water currents from the south a little later in the year have the biggest impact.

Yeah, sort of. The ekman effect can make the water temp plummet overnight.

In summer the typical pattern is 3 or 4 strong NEers in a row and water drops a few deg. Then a southerly blows in and warm it back up.

About 10 years ago in spring the water was edging up to 19deg, the next morning out of nowhere it was 14deg!!

My parents have two dogs that are accustomed to warmer weather. And whilst I know that winter around these parts lasts for about 2 weeks on average, it does get pretty cold at night during the winter. That is why Mum and Dad bought the dogs their own tents covering their beds. Plus, they get to put jackets on at night.

Dare I say that Monk would be wise enough to be making arrangements so that Socks does not get cold at all during the freezing nights.

Indirectly, it does. But to get to the building of the immune system, your body will be under a lot of stress, which will lead to infection build up. Your immune system will then fight off the infection and create its own antibodies. Then your immune system has a new way to fight off similar viruses and germs.

You are experiencing under 5 degrees right at this time of posting. You cannot talk about dogs that put up with a month's worth of cold weather. Most of the year, the weather is either pleasant or hot. Are you going to comment about dogs that have to put up with hot weather, too?

It went down to 8 deg here last night. Having a large mass of warmer water very close by means it doesn't get as cold in winter when you live on the beach.

Depending on which measurement you want to believe. I can be anywhere between 173 and 177cm tall. 5XL shirts are my usual size shirts. I had a bit of a thing where I would have to buy shirts that were 2 sizes bigger than I would normally wear, because the shirts would shrink in the wash over time. Not that they shrunk as badly nowadays, after I was told not to use hot water to wash my clothes.

Nope. Just got on the scales. 107kg. I think I am gaining weight again. Ugh!

I have adopted two dogs from the RSPCA so have some experience. Also, unlike way too many here, I can think and I read widely.

I would have loved to use Demi as a therapy dog in hospital and nursing home when volunteers were asked for but I was still running my businesses then later after I retired the club no longer did therapy visits. Socks would be good—she really is sweet natured—but NOT with children.

Someone like you Monk could well be useful in linking suitable pets with Australians who live alone.

I’m thinking this could be a part time volunteer thing of course (there’s no money around these days). Even then I think volunteers should not be taken for granted. They ought to be respected and regarded. Monthly morning tea/luncheons perhaps to link up with other volunteers and share tips/experiences.

I’m assuming there’s SOME service like this in the community anyway. If not then there bloody well should be.

Local Councils should be onto this. Surely someone has worked out that dogs sitting around in overcrowded pounds could well be allocated on a case by case basis to those who need companionship and/or therapy!

The only obstacle I can foresee in such an arrangement is the cost to keep an animal (esp given current high inflation and interest rates etc).

Even then surely some arrangement could be worked out. I’m thinking more along the lines of allocating the dog to someone in need within the community along with someone else who may be able to sponsor the dog and help pay for its upkeep ie not physically care for the dog but will get regular updates on the animal and care giver.

Does anyone know if this type of scheme is already in existence? I wouldn’t know ... hence my question.

The idea came to me last night when we were discussing depression/suicide in this topic and I started linking all that to Monk (our resident recluse) and his rescue dog (you gotta admit that unlike Monk ... that dog is gorgeous and has most definitely captured our hearts).

those people know more about dogs than you do.

You can't just grab a dog from the pound, take them to a nursing home etc and and hope it'll work. The dog needs to be trained and socialised and tested. That takes money and time.

As I pointed out to the troll, puppies in the pound likely have issues from physical abuse anyway and so would not be suitable for therapy dogs.

Case by case basis means selection criteria apply which must incorporate some well planned induction period (to test compatibility).

I wonder what the full full cost to retain an animal in a pound/day would be?

I bet they’re overcrowded too.

Rescue dogs are not there to be rescued by people .... they’re there to rescue people. Perhaps we need to change our attitude and approach to such animals.

Puppies from the pound really are not suitable. Most have a history of physical abuse. Out of the two puppies I adopted from the RSPCA shelter BOTH had experienced physical abuse.

Why do puppies stray? Stray far enough the owner can’t find them. They stray because of physical abuse.

I give my dogs love, set boundaries and look to their needs, toiletting, walking, obedience training. In that environment the dogs lose the fear and feeling of rejection. This does not happen instantly.

I KNOW Demi, the Jack Russell/Maltese Terrier cross was hit with books and god knows what else.

I KNOW Socks was tormented by a toddler.


These dogs need therapy, in effect. That makes them unsuitable to help with therapy with people, damaged people that need help.

If you want to get over a sunburn, having cold water filled with a couple trays of ice cubes is the way to go about treatment. Leave the ice cubes to melt for 10 minutes. Get your book to read and lay in the tub for an hour.
