Title: What was your breakfast this morning
Post by Jovial Monk on Mar 17th, 2023 at 6:15am
Like the Private Eye headline said when Hirohito was flying to the UK: “A nasty nip in the air” this morning.

So a bowl of porridge this morning. Uncle Toby’s rolled oats, milk, and, not being able to find my mixed dried fruit, candied ginger. Bit of superb jam and breakfast went down the hatch no trouble at all.

I had to be forced to eat porridge as a kid in 1950s Holland but now I eat it no problems and enjoy it. An acquired taste maybe but isn’t everything except mother’s milk?

A bowl of porridge warms you up and you are good to go till lunchtime!

Those with “Silly Yak” disease of course are barred from this simple, nourishing and stick-to-the ribs breakfast but corn should give them something tasty. Anyone here in that situation that found a hearty winter breakfast like porridge? If so, please share.

Umm, the betaglucans in oats are supposed to remove cholesterol deposits in our arteries.

3 pregnancies with revolting non stop morning sickness issues (hyperemesis) saw the end of breakfast for me. For life.

These days I manage to keep down a morning soy milk latte with 2 teaspoons of raw sugar. At around 9 am. That’s it.

Even with the barista machine re set up and working the first cup of coffee at least of the day will be instant. Why? Quick and easy way to ingest caffeine!

I actually don't eat breakfast.

Haven't done so since I was a kid.

I have a cup of tea at around 4am, and maybe (not always) a cup of coffee around 9am (which is right now, and I'm sipping on a Vittoria as I type).

I don’t have breakfast… only a cuppa coffee. If I have to go out I grab a fruit to eat when I feel the need to eat in morning.
But strange thing about porridge… when cruising on ships… with all the flash breakfast laid out and I go for the shortest line up… porridge! Yum!

If I'm on holiday in another country, I'll have breakfast - but not when I'm home.

For example, when I'm staying in hotels in Europe I usually have a breakfast consisting of those tiny little sausages, some fried mushrooms, and fried tomatoes.

I used my barista machine for the first time in months. Not 100% successful—that nice coffee I bought was really meant for a french press or drip filter. Nice to use it tho.

BUT

the machine is for two cups and a small demitasse cup is too narrow to capture both streams of coffee.

I was always told you have to eat breakfast. I could easily not have breakfast and too often do miss it. But I do try to eat something in the morning and to vary what that is. I do only have a small serving in the AM, Like the one mentioned was maybe a quarter bowl, 100 grams or so. Enough to kick off the metabolism.

A good Coffee negates any need for another one in the day, regardless of how it is made and looks.
x10 teaspoons of coffee
x9 teaspoons of sugar
Pour milk first, so as to not 'burn' the coffee.
Add medium warm sometimes cold water in Summer, so one can skull the coffee and be done with it as the 'hit' kicks in immediately.

Why the hell would you add sugar to your coffee? The milk has enough sugar as it is.

Well it kinda comes to my reasoning Subby in much the same way as I have x10 teaspoons of coffee. I drink Soy milk though - I love the cardboard taste.

As soon as I skull my morning coffee,I'm like: Five days ago Peanut man was here, but now he's gone!!! :o

I’m not sure what I will feel like later as breakfast …. I have brioche hot cross buns that look inviting. About mid morning with my second cuppa coffee maybe.

I’m never hungry upon waking for at least an hour or more. Despite what “break fast” means…

I was looking at the online menu for brunches at the Chocolatier and ask family members to go with me… none are interested… wowsers! Tell me I’m not to go to chocolate places… (I do have an addiction to chocolate) but I protesteth that they do have meals there too!  ;D
PS…. I might sneak over there during week and will take photos of the place  :)

I travel 70Kms every so often to where my bank branch is, for things requiring actual attendance there. There is a shop nearby where they sell some nice chocolates. I buy a big pack and buy some fudge as well and limit myself (at least 95% of the time) to two chocolates a day with morning coffee. The fudge allows me to stretch the chocolate supply.

The coffee was the first made here in my barista machine. Not really a success—the little demitasse cup is too narrow to catch both streams of coffee and the actual coffee not really suitable to the machine, dammit!

Little cups (“demi tasse”) mean strong coffee.

The crockery is nothing special.

I DO like sets tho, not a jumble of different cup/saucer/plate yuck.

Look on Ebay and GumTree. Coffee set, bone china etc. Think a lot of people are trying to sell stuff so bargains abound. The set in the photo is made by Crown Derby and has “Made in England” on the base, so made after 1927 (I think, 1920s anyway.)

Look for something hand painted—much more valuable.

I have made and drank tea with Mum out of cups and saucers over 200 years old. Was a slightly weird experience.

I tried drinking the tea out of the saucer as they would have done back then (and even George Orwell recommended in WW2 (“A nice cup of tea” I think the article was called) but wasn’t happy, too used to drinking out of a cup.

The saucers were like bowls‚a smooth flat bottom with the cup sliding around on the saucer.

What is a thin golden head on coffee ?

Coffee is topped with an oil film. Typically the thicker the film the more bitter the coffee. This is a big part of the coffee taste difference. Depending on taste a good coffee can be anywhere on that spectrum. My preference is for a mild tasting non bitter coffee. I am not sure what you mean here.

My grandmother would do that occasionally and I sometimes joined her. There was a story behind it but I don't remember what it was. She had an old formal tea set but not as old as yours.

She had one of those old kookaburra ovens and she normally would make a brew in the morning and top it up through the day (in a big heavy iron tea pot). It seemed ok at the time but in reality was likely pretty gruesome after several hours.

She used this stove well into the 1980's, it was functional when the house was sold.

This was in her nice waterfront property, she had a pier about 200 metres long.

I think old people lose a lot of the sense of taste and smell (taste is 65% smell) but the tannin bitterness of “stewed” tea they would be able to taste.

I bought a tea at a tea bar in the Adelaide Central Market. VERY subtle taste, not sure Mum would have tasted anything and the tea looked like water, the tea didn’t add much color. Subtle, nice to try but I didn’t get more.

Many years ago I used an importer that was in Glebe (when I was doing it commercially), They had some great coffee - to my taste anyway.

I imagine it would be fun to shop around to find a product that you like. I have some Vittoria but have to admit it is just ok coffee. (to me).

Currently use this small cup or a clear glass double lined cup about the same size for espresso.

He just has to be nasty - especially when people are just having a polite conversation. Just no need for it.

Jason seems to want to be part of the trio of Bobby/“Lisa Jones”/Aussie. They do not encourage him but he keeps trying—acceptance is what he obviously craves.

Been trying to think what I paid for the table, $450 I think but not sure, long time ago. The top is solid, not veneer.

Had a cup of Tea. Would have eaten but didn't get around to it.

Provided Breakfast to the Dog, The Turtles and the fish. 4 new born fish fry swimming around the tank the last 3 days.

One of the turtles gets up on its back legs topples over backward and swims backstroke when I approach with food.

Yesterday my grandaughter fed the turtles and fish. I had to net the wrong food out of the tank and correct that and she underfed the turtles so I gave them a supplement an hour later. Today they are lined up waiting for second breakfast.

What does goon mean Australia?

1.Goon. If you've travelled Australia for some time you'll be well acquainted with the term goon, for freshies,
it means wine that comes in a box and gives you the best bang for your buck.

It was originally a common usage abbreviation for Flagon, It has come to include Boxes of wine. It refers to a large amount of cheaper wine in a bottle / container - a goon.

Origin of name
The double name is a corruption of the indigenous term apparently taken from the local Darkinjung Aboriginal people, and reputedly means 'big lagoon' or 'much water', referring to the deep tidal channel adjacent to the town centre. It was originally known as Webb's Flat, named for James Webb, the first European settler of the Brisbane Water region in 1823, and was first explored by a party led by Governor Arthur Phillip in 1789.

Homebrew can be good beer even if you don’t brew your beer from scratch.

The thing to avoid is the “kit and kilo” i.e. a can of kit and a kilo of dextrose.

Add malt: a can of kit and a can of unhopped extract make a 100% malt beer.

Or use dry malt extract. Use this as 80% extract with 20% dextrose—all dry extract makes a gluggy beer. Dry malt extract needs to be dissolved in cold water and brought to a boil. Why not add some hops to give a nice hoppy nose to your beer?

Etc—full extract, part mash and full mash.

Anyone can see the table is made of wood too dark to be pine. I never even mentioned the gilding on the cups etc—that is just done. I do have some really old cups where the gilding was worn off by long use.

I am sure I mentioned before Mum’s life in her earlier years: Great Depression, WWIi and occupation, Hunger Winter 44/5 and her mother giving Mum the key to the pantry “You can say no, I can’t.” That sort of experience leads one to be pretty careful with money. Did with Mum anyway.

The Tollund Man's last breakfast was a "porridge or gruel made from grains and seeds, both cultivated and wild. Approximately 40 kinds of seeds were identified, but the porridge was primarily composed of four types: barley, flax, false flax (Camelina sativa), and knotgrass. From the stage of digestion it was concluded that the man had eaten 12 to 24 hours prior to his death. Porridges were common for people of this time. Because neither meat nor fresh fruit was found in the last meal, it is suggested that the meal was eaten in winter or early spring, when these items were not available."

Anyone who did woodwork in high school knows you can stain pine to be whatever shade of darker or even red you desire.

Women who have never done formal woodworking also know this.

Mong has a cheap pine table.

Cedar is preferred material for things like wardrobes it's a natural repellant for bugs that eat clothes.

Of course it's optional. Turdie saw a thick cup at his local kennel and thought that made him an expert.  Espresso drinkers have been using thin cups for decades. Cafe's in Australia like the thick cups because they get banged around a lot and the thinner ones are more likely to chip or crack. Only an idiot who drinks Espresso because he thinks it's trendy would ever claim its 'supposed to be thick '.

International Roast! Sister bought a tin of that while I was in Tassy and she told me she had bought erzatz coffee so the before bedtime coffee Mum drank wouldn’t keep her awake. For a couple of days I thought she meant the International Roast! But sis brought another jar of the stuff.

An empty used cup usually looks dirty, Booby. At least the cup isn’t as thick as Gordon today!

Hmmmm! called in at the PO on the way to the recreation reserve. Big, intriguingly aromatic parcel for me—my spices! Yay! Whole spices, not ground.

Also two types of rice, 2 packets split peas for pea soup and a kilo pearl barley (barley with the sharp husk milled off.) I remember pearl barley is called for in one of the sausage/pie recipes so good to go!

Will spend a happy time transferring the spices to spice jars. I know the spice rack made the journey to here unscathed, that will have to be mounted on a kitchen wall soon. I have jars and labels for the spices. Cool!

As soon as I skull my morning coffee,I'm like: Five days ago Peanut man was here, but now he's gone!!! :o

I put 2 scoops of coffee into my soup bowl mug. I pour 3/4th water into the mug. I boil the water for 3 minutes. Then I add milk to the coffee to a cm below the brim. Even then, I think I put too much milk in. I am probably a few months away from just drinking straight black coffee.

Ethiopian coffee in a Wedgewood cup.

I have visited a lot of op shops—they were a mania almost with Mum. I always looked in the bric a brac display, found 4 stoneware tea cups I thought would be great for use outside, when grey nomading etc or in the garden shed. Nothing special at all ahout them. That is the crockery/cutlery/glassware I bought from an op shop. Lots of books I did buy.

I paid $35 for one Wedgewood cup and saucer and $50 or 55 for the next two. Then the eBay price went ballistic.

I wouldn’t pay that much! No decoration inside the cup, no lip to the cup and the decoration on the outside looks printed not handpainted. Finally, the design is pretty damn commonplace.

If you would like fantastic chocolate then mail order here:

https://anvers-chocolate.com.au/shop/

When I had land in Tasmania and went there to work the land I would visit Anvers on the way back to the ferry to the mainland, it is close to Devonport. Their hot chocolate is the stuff to dream of, hot, rich, chocolaty. Any visitor to Tassie should stop there and spend up big on their superb chocolates.

I also stopped at the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm cafe—incredibly good raspberry jam and delicious raspberry sauce. A bit of that sauce over icecream, heavenly!

https://raspberryfarmcafe.com/shop/

I buy two large jars of their raspberry jam, 4 bottles of sauce and for baking etc a bottle or two of their raspberry syrup—don’t buy this unless you bake etc. I am thinking half a bottle of this would go great in a fruitcake!

Finally, if you like cheese, Ashgrove is a few Km up the road to Devonport from the raspberry farm café.

https://www.ashgrovecheese.com.au/blogs/news

I would also stop at a winery or two on the way back, Velo Wines and Holm Oak. Superb very Tasmanian wine. Great pinot noirs!

Either via his late Mother or he picked up bargains from Op shops.

Op shops often have very valuable stuff and the halfwits working there don't know it.
It's from deceased estates and no one bothers to check it properly.
People can even buy something for $10 then sell it on eBay for $500 or more.

I like Op shops.
In my last house I needed a wooden table and chairs.
Most of the new ones were made of cheap particle board rubbish
and cost too much money.
I got this table & chairs from an Op shop in a high class suburb at a great price.
It's solid wood - not laminated.

Bobby's table looks much like the table I grew up using at my folk's place. The ends of the table could have end extensions that could be pulled out from under the table and pushed into place. I still remember my parents trying to instill table etiquette in us children asking "May I leave the table?" before we finished our meals.

The microwave I have will be replaced soon. Either at my own expense or the landlady's. But, if I want a quick meal, using the microwave is the way to cook up a quick mac and cheese.
