What was it used for?

It is made of wood and the surface at the edge is covered with fine scratches <== a clue!

Sock darning doover!

Put it inside the sock which has a hole ii it!

Yeah, a palm that would get pricked by the needle saving the sewers’ fingers.

Sock darning doovers looked like mushrooms with a long stem and a rather smaller palm.

Doubt anybody darns socks these days.

OK but it would not be comfortable. I would prefer to darn the hole (sew it up)
