Auckland floods: New Zealand city declares emergency after torrential rain

New Zealand's largest city has declared a state of emergency after torrential rain prompted widespread flooding and evacuations.

Friday's downpour in Auckland shifted houses, stalled traffic and cut power to homes and businesses.

The city is said to have received 75% of its usual summer rainfall in just 15 hours.

"The impacts of the last 24 hours will be felt by many in Auckland for a long time," said the national forecaster.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), the country's climate science body, has said Friday was the wettest day on record for a number of locations in Auckland.
Heavy rains have been forecast in various parts of the city for at least the next five days.

"It goes without saying that we need to have a conversation about how climate change is making these events more frequent and how cities like Auckland are massively underprepared," said Mr March.

While climate scientists have cautioned against attributing individual weather events to climate change,
research by NIWA has found the warming planet
is leading to more extreme weather events in New Zealand.

The Elton John concert at Mt Smart on Saturday night has been cancelled. The Friday night show was also canned at the last minute for being 'too dangerous'.

Meanwhile, a car has been trapped in flooding on Auckland’s Northern Motorway as rising water brings traffic going in both directions to a standstill.

People are attempting to extract the car near the Northcote on-ramp on Auckland’s North Shore.

A witness told NZME that an ambulance travelled the wrong way down the motorway to get through.

Apparently, the same thing happened in 1985.

NZ has a maritime climate.

Occasionally freak storms cause floods.

On a historical note, as recorded in religious texts of all world religions, catastrophic and society-destroying floods have occurred. Were they examples of ancient climate change?

The devastating Auckland floods could be the “biggest weather-related claims event in our history”, with more than 5000 insurance claims lodged as of Sunday morning.

The supercity was put into a state of emergency on Friday night as a line of severe thunderstorms unleashed on the region, flooding homes, creating slips and causing havoc for locals.

Three people have died as a result of the natural disaster.

On Sunday, the forecast was still looking bleak, but most emergency services were now in clean up mode – as were insurance companies.

Is it possible that floods, droughts and famine didn't occur, (or unremembered within their respective cultures) in the times when the religious texts were written?

Having travelled a lot around New Zealand over many years.
That sort of thing is very common. If you look at the soil, it isn't very solid.
