Read between the lines on that f - king song. It's class warfare and social conditioning. The Seekers were nothing more than pro-capitalist government-controlled pussy placebo band. Absolutely disgusting.

And yes, I was on drugs when I wrote this.

I feel very sorry for you Marla.

Why? Are you a Judith Durham sympathizer and support this kind of behavior? Judith Durham is not seeking to alleviate the plight of poor women but rather to mock them with capitalist imperialist aggression and that god damn song is aggressive towards poor women.

Are we listening and seeing the same song here? White people singing for other white people about an overpowering element of imperialist hypocrisy.

So I guess it's sooooooo cool to you that women put down other women for how they can't afford to dress Stepford Wife whores for there husbands and look "bitchin'" on the fashionable streets of London? What is wrong with you? All songs like this do is divide women

Hey there, Marla girl
Swinging down the street so fancy-free
Nobody you meet could ever see the loneliness there inside you
Hey there, Marla girl
Why do all the boys just pass you by?
Could it be you just don't try or is it the clothes you wear?
You're always window shopping but never stopping to buy
So shed those dowdy feathers and fly a little bit
Hey there, Marla girl
There's another Marla deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide and, oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see a new Marla girl
Hey there, Marla girl
Dreaming of the someone you could be
Life is a reality, you can't always run away
Don't be so scared of changing and rearranging yourself
It's time for jumping down from the shelf a little bit
Hey there, Marla girl
There's another Marla deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide and, oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see a new Marla girl
Wake up, Marla girl
(Hey there, Marla girl)
Come on, Marla girl
(Hey there, Marla girl)
Wake up, Marla girl

This is awful news 🥺😔

In May 2017, it was announced that Newton-John's breast cancer had returned and metastasized to her lower back. Her back pains had initially been misdiagnosed as sciatica.

On 8 August 2022, Newton-John died from breast cancer at her home in California, aged 73.

Poor Olivia. She fought back real hard. Unfortunately you never win with breast cancer.

She had one of the best female voices in the music industry. And she was such a beautiful Australian.

RIP Olivia 🌹

It was not one of her best songs for me but it wasn't out of line in the early 60's. She didn't write the song it was written as the title track for the movie "Georgie Girl" by Jim Dale and Tom Springfield where the lyrics in perspective are reasonable.

She had a wonderful voice and the seekers were Australia's first international success as a music group.

He’s not the same as you and me
He doesn’t dig poetry

I’m feeling shattered at these news of deaths from two Australian female singers I loved and grew up with. As most of us did.
I recall how a 16 year old Olivia went overseas with Pat Carroll I think it was. When I saw Olivia for the first time in the newspaper about this trip… I thought how beautiful she was! I recall when she was in the USA doing songs and movies… how they likened her clean image with Doris Day and Olivia said she was honoured and flattered to be compared to Doris.

RIP Olivia…. We will all miss you xx

You can't say that, Marla, Libby's like a saint to the Aussie race. We think she's a kind of nun.

We still choke on our tea when Let's Get Physical comes on, it's disgusting. They had to black out parts of the screen on Countdown.

You Americans spoiled her. You jizzed on her face and threw a handful of crumpled dollar bills at her, it's awful. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

She was quite a catch before you people got your hands on her. Now look at her - dead, penniless and in the gutter, probably a needle stuck in her arm. Libby's sad demise should be a cautionary tale to us all.

Never release a duet with Cliff Richard.

Oh? That's nothing compared to having titless 12 year olds covering your songs on Young Talent Time.

Libby should have come home straight after Grease. Where were the parents?

She could have had a nice career touring the RSLs with Judith Durham.

Those were the days, Lols. That was the Libby we all remember, before the sharks and hustlers got to her. With the right direction, she could have had a career like Patti Newton -  appearing regularly on This Is Your Life (she knew everybody), the odd advert for denture powder and a double page family spread each month in the Women's Weekly.

Now, that's tasteful. No aerobics videos, no awful Las Vegas shows and no appearances on Hey Hey It's Saturday.

I'm not racist, dear, but Libby was a real lady before the Jews got their hands all over her.

I'm sorry, but it's true.

I'm a Jew... part thereof..... now bow down so I can wipe my boots on you... with you and the Nazi around I might convert and return to the part-family roots, move to Israel and take out a few Pallers or something.

This joint is sure going to hell on a bike...

I literally am moved to tears when I read this - reminds me of my lovely cousin who died far too young of the Dread BC.  She was a Libran, too. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Oh, I know. I do feel the board has taken a nasty turn for the worse, don't you?

Maybe we can get a few more posters from Stormfront to even the score.

I'll have you know decent young ladies appreciate such vocational guidance. If you'd prefer to see our fine Australian talent washed up on foreign shores, co-hosting infomercials for weight-loss supplements and mechanical "ab-busters", I suggest you pen a stern letter to Cleo Magazine.

No doubt you enjoy such smut. I, for one, do not.

How divine. Perhaps he could drizzle some yoghurt over it. Delish, no?

Just heard on the news that Olivia Newton-John is having a State Funeral.

Anyone know if Judith Durham is having a State Funeral? I hope so.

Both were very beautiful talented Australian women.

I wish to dedicate this poem (which I originally wrote a few years ago) to a wonderful Australian woman - Olivia Newton John who inspired me personally. I still can't believe she's no longer with us.

Sunset - by Lisa Jones

Gazing into a sunset blazing with fire
I breathe Mother Nature's air of desire
I stand in its awe as I deeply admire
Perfection that settles down to retire.

Rest in my arms and be one with me.
Let's journey the unknown and set ourselves free
Understand and unlock this mystery
Love has a heart and your soul is the key.

And if God is love then I feel God in my heart
I feel God in my bones as you watch me depart
I've mastered Life's pain and I've mastered Love's art
I've learned all my lines and I've played out my part.

When you feel the wind touching your face
It is but my ghost trying to embrace
A time that only memory can retrace
A love that is God in our private, personal space.

This sunset's blaze has shined and shone
And another day's love has come and gone.
Time keeps a record of all that I've done.
I've done nothing wrong but shine God as the sun.

RIP 🌹

Yes America stole our girl… but they loved her… Koala Blue store n all.
She was their new Doris Day… to which Olivia said she was flattered and honoured to be compared with Doris.
I just say… that “physical” song vid was a bit of a “wow …wha…?” Then I found out certain US states banned it… geez…. Haven’t we come a long way since then!
I was thinking about others that have departed in this last 12 months
..Doug Parkinson, Bert, Sidney Poitier, Carla Zampatti, Archie, Judith and Warnie.
There’s more I know but I’m starting to feel a part of my entertained life has just gone out the stage exit, as most of us in the audience here are feeling.
Reflections of the way life used to be….

It is so silly, corny and daggy yet it takes you in.
Olivia lights up the screen - she had some kind of positive energy

My daughter and I were talking in phone about Liv…. Daughter is a millennium and she was talking about how she can’t believe Olivia is gone, she was devastated… remembering her time watching grease lightening…
I think every gen felt Liv belonged to them… which shows how amazing she was to appeal to many different age groups.
My daughter felt that Olivia held in a lot of pain… divorce, then 2nd hubby disappearing… miscarriages….then the wretched “C”…. And her constant involvement with charities and that beautiful cancer research centre.
Wanting to help others in the same boat journey.
We have lost family to C…. my hubby’s mum was 57 and had the exact same BC as Libby. My bro passed 2 years ago from C… he was 61.
It’s weird… like gaping holes in life. :-[

We lost a great star today.
She was never pretentious and you always felt that
you could perhaps sit down with her and have a normal conversation
if there was ever that chance.
Her life wasn't easy yet she held her head high and remained positive.

Well yes, this is so. Libby did introduce our national food to the Yanks. Granted, there was a slight lift in Vegemite sales.

But hawking off a few Ken Done T shirts and Jenny Kee jumpers at ridiculous prices does not compensate for abandoning our race in its time of need, no?

While we were winning the America's Cup and celebrating our jolly bicentennial, Libby was riding around on that silly American ranch of hers. It's no excuse. She should have been back here, treading the boards and doing guest appearances on Wheel Of Fortune, Perfect Match and Celebrity It's A Knockout.

Isn't she just another foreigner born overseas, spent a short period in Australia, but lived more like an American Media type (as does the Australian Media) and never really looked back?

I mean, she's a Pom no?
Nicole Kidman is a Hawaiin.
Daddo's are Canadians.
etc, etc

She's just another foreigner that Australians just try to steal and sponge off as their 'own' possessively.
Always thought of her as your 'typical' American media type, more than Australian. Born a Pom too.

...but hey hey - the Australian Media is really 'America'.

Australia: ruled by Britain, populated by people who live like they're in America.

Yes Boris she lived and was schooled in Melbourne. I don't remember personally but history reveals the family lived here when her Dad was a professor at Melbourne University. I know she went to University High through a friend who taught there until recently....part of the school's history I guess.

The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre here in Melbourne, part of her philanthropic achievement, has saved lives and assisted families in countless measure.

While media coverage of her passing appears to be primarily focussing on her career (not unreasonable on the world stage), for me, her humanitarian record stands supreme.

That in itself is a huge achievement! How much red tape and legal and medical jargon she must’ve had to endure to be able to finally open that centre. Given she is not a doctor… and she was battling and trying to maintain cancer herself.
I think it may have been a tremendous toll on her in many ways… but she never showed it… always smiling and thinking/saying positive stuff.

I understand how you feel… and I admit… I was horrified we were left behind… at that time of career pursuing… I was upset America swallowed her up …. But…. It was evident where her heart was and how she never made USA forget she was our Aussie gal….
It became more apparent we were always made to feel in touch with Livvy no matter where she was… or what she was doing.
She was like an old friend that never lost contact with us.
Sure… I would’ve loved her to be stuck in Oz with limited work but she made it big in the USA… as a result… she was a huge philanthropist and even opened up a cancer wellness/research centre in Melbourne.
Had she not made it big over in USA…. none of this could’ve transpired, not to this magnitude.

There were of course many other musicians going overseas to try and make it big… but failed… or… with success… never felt in touch with them again.

One group I’m thinking of… Human Nature…. I went to see their live performance along with Doug Parkinson … absolutely loved it… and now… they’re swallowed up by Vegas…. I have no idea how they’re doing… successful I would imagine. But lost touch.

Vale Olivia

That in itself is a huge achievement! How much red tape and legal and medical jargon she must’ve had to endure to be able to finally open that centre. Given she is not a doctor… and she was battling and trying to maintain cancer herself.
I think it may have been a tremendous toll on her in many ways… but she never showed it… always smiling and thinking/saying positive stuff.

Don't underestimate "soft power." She had it in spades.

I like that. Reminds me that there is some validity that one can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

I came across this tribute I wanted to share which I think is lovely.

Elizabeth Taylor single-handedly improved America's poor initial response to AIDS by using her soft power. Married to a US senator at the time, she would slip little notes into the pockets of men who grew up idolizing her encouraging them to fund the AIDS response ... and it worked.

I remember her there and saw her on TV when I was a lad - she is 4 years older than me and I remember her well.

She was always part of my life though I never met her.

She was very special.

I can't help it if she's fabricated.
Really a plain Jane brunette with the fake blonde fake it to make it.
I've heard Olivia was a nasty to the nobodies who weren't in her personal space to praise her celebrity existence.
She being like Princess Diana - all a show for the camera's being nice and soft, but a potty mouthed Houso off camera.
Even Amy Winehouse could put on a stage show as if nothing was wrong, only to be crawling across the floor debilitated only to die the next week.

Seems these foreign born who still call Australia home only do so as a Media marketing gig and mostly when they're out of work in the USA or overseas or when they're down and out for some reason. Yep, when things are low - they come back here to the peasantry for some sympathy.

Like Marla said - better the Aust Health Care System than the expensive USA one.
Even Minogue didn't want to pay for the British one and then took an entire floor of a Hospital for herself (why? Ego?) that compromised many other people and patients.

She's a British born 'American' girl who called Australia a home for the fully sick bro.

I think most of Australia is with you there ... never having met her but loving her infectious smile and forever youthful looks. And oh man!!! What a voice! Seriously...Australia had 2 unbelievably awesome singers in Judith Durham and Olivia Newton John. Both are gone now. Within a week of each other. Terribly sad. These 2 women helped raise Australia's profile and image globally with their music, voice...and beautiful soul. Whenever I play a song on YouTube by either woman I hear soothing music sung by an angel with pitch perfect precision.

(There is 1 other singer who fits this description IMO - Barbra Streisand - however she's not Australian.)

Edit : And thank God Barbra Streisand is STILL alive too. Irrespective of her age ... her voice remains pitch perfect and flawless. I can't think of any other amazing singer like her and who's still with us.

Anyway we've lost 2 amazing Australian women 🥺😔

I remember sitting on the back steps listening to ONJ singing songs like Banks of the Ohio when in my early teens.

Always liked this tribute with Peter Allen about 10 years after his death.
