Except for poms who are no longer European.
The average height of the tallest Europeans is 10 cm taller than Australians. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Average_human_height_by_country |

Whatever the height average of Australian men, we seem to have taller than average women in Australia. Imagine standing as tall as your teenage daughter.

Most nations in the taller areas have a history of high protein food and good quality water often with a high calcium content. (bone growth)
The other major influence is that Woman tend to breed with taller men. In some places this is more pronounced. In these regions taller men produce more children and they tend to survive in higher numbers. The gene pool is taller and continues to build on itself as women get taller men get taller and woman have more taller men to select to breed with. I would think that in some of the historically more violent areas taller people may have had a better chance of surviving on the battle field for enough times to allow for successful breeding. Other parts of the world have what we would now call better diets (less protein) and more average water additives. They may have been less violent. The Woman while still selecting taller mates maybe not by so much, possibly driven by both need and availability of taller men. People in Amsterdam have increased by 20cm in the last 150 years. |

The European men and women I have met in my life have not been all that tall. They stand taller than other racial backgrounds. But, never taller than the average Aussie. I have a female co-worker that stands as tall as 185cm tall. They are only 17 years old. One 16-year-old is about my height 176cm. Whereas the guys are around my height or taller. One looks to be near 2 metres tall.
The non-caucasian co-workers (being 18 years old or older) tend to be shorter than me. |

It probably has to do with the natural vitamin D production that the northern Europeans have to make. Some areas in Scandanavia get months of sunlight during their summer months. |

They can get months of sunlight in summer, and no sun at all in the winter months I've been in Norway when it was broad daylight at midnight. After 27 hrs in a plane + 6 hrs in airports, and suffering from exhaustion (I don't sleep well on planes) then i asked someone for the current time so I could adjust my watch ...Talk about throwing me off my game. :D :D |

From the source referenced in the OP:
"Accuracy As with any statistical data, the accuracy of such data may be questionable for various reasons: Some studies may allow subjects to self-report values.[1] Generally speaking, self-reported height tends to be taller than measured height, although the overestimation of height depends on the reporting subject's height, age, gender and region.[2][3][4][5] Test subjects may have been invited instead of chosen at random, resulting in sampling bias. Some countries may have significant height gaps between different regions. For instance, one survey shows there is 10.8 cm (4+1⁄2 in) gap between the tallest state and the shortest state in Germany.[6] Under such circumstances, the mean height may not represent the total population unless sample subjects are appropriately taken from all regions with using weighted average of the different regional groups. Different social groups can show different mean height. According to a study in France, executives and professionals are 2.6 cm (1 in) taller, and university students are 2.55 cm (1 in) taller[a] than the national average.[7] As this case shows, data taken from a particular social group may not represent a total population in some countries. The height of a person can vary over the course of a day, due to factors such as a height decrease from exercise done directly before measurement (i.e. inversely correlated), or a height increase since lying down for a significant period of time (i.e. positively correlated). For example, one study revealed a mean decrease of 1.54 centimetres (0.61 in) in the heights of 100 children from getting out of bed in the morning to between 4 and 5 p.m. that same day.[8] Such factors may not have been controlled in some of the studies." |

Germany is either a bad example for this comparison on national height or a good example to show the developmental differences. There was a wall separating the east and west where the different standard of living led to development on the east being stinted and the west outgrowing the east. Men have caught up now (younger men) but women have not. This is the exact opposite to the European countries where height has exploded. Many European countries line up similar to Australia. |

Germany and France are big countries with a variety of regions and ethnicities and types. Pomeranian are not like Westphalians and Bretons are not like Provencals. |
