Title: WInd turbines kill "almost no" birds Post by random on Jun 6th, 2022 at 4:59pm
I live on a farm. I never understood the claim the more birds are killed by wind farms than by cars or cats. This report confirms that suspicion.
Danish research shows “almost no birds” die in collisions with wind turbines https://reneweconomy.com.au/danish-research-shows-almost-no-birds-die-in-collisions-with-wind-turbines-43335/ “The results confirm that birds are astonishingly good at flying around or over the turbines. This is positive, not only because almost no birds die in collisions, but also because it means that the erection of wind turbines doesn’t need to be in direct conflict with natural areas. This new knowledge should be taken into consideration in connection with the planning of new wind farms.” The report was carried out and authored by three recognised consultancies, including local professional ornithologists. The three authors were Jan Drachmann of the Pennen & Sværdet consultancy, who has a Ph.D. in population biology (evolution, ecology and genetics) from Aarhus University; Simon Waagner of Profus Naturrådgivning (PROFUS Nature Advice), a candidatus scientiarum cand.scient graduate from Aarhus University; and Henrik Haaning Nielsen of Avifauna Consult, a professional ornithologist with lengthy resume of work. Sponsored by Vattenfall, which naturally has a vested interest in the outcome of the report’s findings, the study was carried out partly to prove that the Klim Wind Farm complied with its environmental permit – which stipulates that collisions must not exceed 75% of the current sustainable mortality rates for populations of pink-footed geese and crane. However, importantly, the findings stand for themselves, as do the credits of the three independent authors who carried out the investigation." |

From studies done on 2012 ( the wind turbines have increased greatly since then) between 140,000 and 679,000 per year. All most none. ;) or this - "But in a response to the claims, the RSPB’s conservation director, Martin Harper, says a large body of scientific evidence shows “appropriately located windfarms have negligible impacts” on bird populations." https://www.carbonbrief.org/bird-death-and-wind-turbines-a-look-at-the-evidence/ Of course wind farms are solely located at sites that protect birds. Nothing to do with the best wind at all. ;) |

Your wish if my command. https://theconversation.com/wind-farms-are-hardly-the-bird-slayers-theyre-made-out-to-be-heres-why-79567 It concluded: wind farms and nuclear power stations are responsible each for between 0.3 and 0.4 fatalities per gigawatt-hour (GWh) of electricity while fossil-fuelled power stations are responsible for about 5.2 fatalities per GWh. That’s nearly 15 times more. From this, the author estimated: wind farms killed approximately seven thousand birds in the United States in 2006 but nuclear plants killed about 327,000 and fossil-fuelled power plants 14.5 million. In other words, for every one bird killed by a wind turbine, nuclear and fossil fuel powered plants killed 2,118 birds. |

The Conversation? ;D ;D
" 2009 study using US and European data on bird deaths estimated the number of birds killed per unit of power generated by wind, fossil fuel and nuclear power systems." But let's actually look at a study. "In making this case, a number of salient limitations deserve mentioning. This study compares wind energy with nuclear power and fossil fuels but not other sources of electricity such as solar panels or hydroelectric dams. Many of the avian deaths from fossil fuels result indirectly from climate change, whereas those from wind energy and nuclear power are more direct from collisions with equipment (wind turbines and nuclear cooling towers) and contamination of land and water (uranium mines and enrichment facilities). " https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/1943815X.2012.746993 Climate change kills birds because they can't move. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D BTW- The study referred to by TC is entitles - "Contextualizing avian mortality: A preliminary appraisal of bird and bat fatalities from wind, fossil-fuel, and nuclear electricity" With the usual plea for more money. ;) |

Either way, the results show that even with high-range estimates for renewables compared to low-range estimates for fossil fuels, fossil fuels are responsible for far more bird fatalities than solar or wind. |

I see the only comeback the renewable cultists can come up with is some references to wind turbines killing fewer birds than previously thought...nothing about the inefficiency and waste though... ::)
