The Australian ecosystem is very fragile by world standards.

I was watching a South American movie on Netflix which featured views of the Amazon river which triggered my interest.

The Australian rivers Flinders and Murrumbidgee are ranked 100, and 101 by flow rate in the rlist.io website but don't get a mention in Wikipedia.

This data certainly reinforces the concept of Australia as a dry continent.

Surprisingly the USA and Canada were not in the top ten. The Mississippi is a piddler by world standards at 13th in the Wikipedia list.

Another surprise was the Nile which is also a piddler.

Regarding waterfalls, Niagara Falls is a piddler by world standards and is ranked 7th in the world by flow rate. Americans hype everything up to make it seem they have the biggest and best of everything.

The big surprise to me was the Ganges river at No. 3 world rank in the Wikipedia list.

If we had the money, we could dig out some man-made rivers and creeks and perhaps divert water to dams/catchments for times when it floods. It probably won't mitigate flooding downstream much. But, it could provide some water upstream.

And unless we had 750mm of rainfall on average each year in desert regions, I doubt that our ecosystem is going to be anything other than fragile.

The Murray–Darling–Culgoa–Balonne–Condamine is the 16th longest river at 2,282 miles.

It would have to be Romans because Australians won't work further than easy travel distance to a pub or bottle shop. And they like to leave heavy work to foreigners.

Aboriginals believe that the Dreamtime was way back, at the very beginning. The land and the people were created by the Spirits. They made the rivers, streams, water holes the land, hills, rocks, plants and animals.

The source of the water would have to be for the towns in the region. Not for the cities. Cities have their own dams and they are not short of water, considering that they are located near the coast. If cities are short of water, they kick in the desalination plants before things get too dire. Then the desalination plants are only a stop measure whilst the dams are really low.

It is wishful thinking to believe that the state governments will invest in making dams in remote and regional places so that there is some increased water security. There would have to be an economic reason to make sure that a place 500km from any city would have the infrastructure in place to have accessible water.
