Title: NBN Speed - masterclass in incompetence
Post by Dnarever on Dec 3rd, 2021 at 8:17am
Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese and Shadow Communications Minister Michelle Rowland recently attacked the Coalition's National Broadband model, accusing the government of compromising download speeds by relying on outdated copper wire technology.

"For nearly a decade, the Liberal and Nationals' oversight of the NBN has been a masterclass in technological incompetence and mismanagement causing Australia to trail behind other developed countries, slipping to 59th in the world on average broadband speeds," the statement read.

Fact Check this week found that claim checks out.

According to Ookla's Speedtest Global Index — a source that experts quoted as the industry standard — Australia ranked 59th out of 180 nations in average broadband download speeds.

Ookla has also recently published a measure of "median" download speeds which the organisation notes better represents a user's likely experience. On this basis, Australia ranked slightly higher at 54.

Experts told Fact Check that Australia's ranking had slipped over the Coalition's term, as suggested by Mr Albanese.

For just $20m the idiots at NBN Co could install cards in each stupid FTTN cabinets that used EIGHT fibres to connect back to the exchange in place of the present ONE measly fibre.

A cabinet connects 195 or 355 subscribers to the exchange. Let us use the 195 subscribers case. The fibre operates at 1Gbyte/second, 8,000,000 bits per second. 195 subscribers share this so each sees

8,000,000/195 bps or 41.026kbps. Never going to see very high speed internet 24/7. During the day it might be OK then kids come home from school and start downloading movies, playing multi-player computer games etc and speed slows to a crawl.

Connect EIGHT fibres from each ridiculous, obsolescent/obsolete FTTN cabinet and now you have eight times the bandwidth, 328kbps. This is for down and uploading.

I guess the braindead Libs didn’t do this is because they were told the Telstra copper (too thin, too corroded) couldn’t handle the speed. The communications of a country throttled back for ideology.

Libs are traitors!

Mates of Liberal politicians have walked away with pockets overflowing with money from cheating the public.

Nearly all Asian countries have faster and more reliable internet service than Australia.

Australia is falling behind in technology because of corruption.

Australia wasn't allowed to have the 'good' NBN because the Liberals didn't want to upset Uncle Rupert.

They couldn't have everyone dumping Foxtel which is what would have happened if everyone had FTTP as per Labor's original NBN plan.

And, it would have been a bit embarrassing for the Liberals to admit Labor had a great idea with FTTP so they had to bring out their own 'soona, cheapa, fasta' version (which turned out to be none of those, of course).

Anyway, I'm still enjoying my FTTP I've had since 2015, no problems with it whatsoever in over 6 years. We got FTTP even though it was 2 years after the Liberals won the 2013 Federal election because our area had already been contracted to be done with FTTP by the previous Labor government.

So was my area I reckon—all the Telstra pits etc painted yellow. Alas, frigging Libs, nothing happened.

They even fuqqed up wireless NBN—towers connected back by microwave which does not have the bandwidth needed. Can’t have any fibre!

Not just asian countries.
Friends in Germany, Italy, France and Finland pay far less ( even as a percentage of their income) get faster speeds, more reliable and access to more sites.

Not just in internet, but phone as well.

We have been sold a dud.
But tgats Australian politicians and public servants.
Far too many of them
All with their fingers in the pie.
All corrupt and looking for a bribe
And all inherently too stupid to work in the real world.

many third world countries have faster and cheaper internet than us.

the libs should face criminal charges for their 'mixed technology' crap

I was recently dealing with and remotely supporting internet connections from many countries.

Canada, UK US for instance get download speeds of at least 250 meg with very good upload as well on their standard service.

Some are fairly poor similar to us, employee on the Greek Islands wasn't the best.

If the troglodyte Libs had not interfered we could (nearly all) have synchronous 1Gbps internet.

Even the FTTH part of the NBN is hobbled—you pay for the speed tier instead of the amount of data you have up/downloaded.

I'm happy with that. All internet should be unlimited, pay more if you want that unlimited faster. I would like more upload speed but that is never an option unless you go business.

My worst gripe about keeping copper in the ground is thunderstorms kill either the NCD or DPU(fibre to the curb here) on average 2-3 times a year, sometimes within a month. That's equipment replaced/fried and the techs that come to repair, costs that could never outweigh fiber to the house, in my case about 30'.

So you are happy with how fast your gay porn takes to download? OK.
