Nu Zulland's politicians feel that they are sufficiently far away from the flash points, that they do not have to worry....

If Australia goes down, they will be safe... if they are outflanked by CCP Fiji and a few other national groups, they will be safe....

They FEEL (the governing word for these days) so isolated from world events that they fail entirely to realise that they are part of a global economy and global interaction.... and are very clearly part of the Asian Pacific Region and Basin.

Feelings are everything, NO?

Footnote:- my kid's grandparents on their mother's side (the pacifist side) came to NZ after WW II, when Barney, the kids' grandfather (who has a book in the national whatever of NZ titled 'Just an Ordinary Bloke'), had been with the BEF and evacuated at Dunkirk, then went to the Western Desert, then to Italy, where he operated behind the German lines..... and Kit was stuck in London with two young girls during the blitz, and one of Kit's brother's was shot down and killed in Bomber Command. One of Kit's brother's sons are Hollywood directors and producers......

A former GF of mine's father commanded a ship of the RNZN in the Solomons etc.... and an uncle of my kid's mother was on HMNZS Achilles at the battle of the River Plate.....

I think NZ needs to wake up and smell the roses and get back into the real world.... it isn't the late 1940's out there now .........

In the 80s, new zealand withstood pressure from Australia and the US in its non-nuclear status.

The Hawke government lent on the Lange government, but failed to deter the policy's enactment.

The Reagan Administration even threatened to end ANZUS and, while it didn't happen, NZ is the part of the acronym in ANZUS that dare not speak its name. It's more like ANUS.

The kiwis withstood the lot back then and they've never wavered.

I'd doubt that it's a ploy as much as it is realpolitik.

Australia is clearly more in the consciousness of the Chinese regime than New Zealand will ever be, particularly regarding the Australia-US relationship; which is more like a love affair than an alliance.

It's highly unlikely to convince the Chinese regime that Australia is militarily significant.

The AUKUS pact's effect is that it has demonstrated to the Chinese regime that Australia is firmly and forever aligned to the US and the UK.

The pact is a signal to the regime of our unshakable, collective and shared destiny with the great democracies.

Nuclear ships have been banned from NZ ports for about 50 Years. Every NZ leader has supported this. Australia knew this and have known it for at least 50 years.

I don't particularly care about the NZ ban on nuclear powered vessels. It has been in place for decades and had had very little effect on the safety and security provided by the Five Eyes and ANZUS treatys.
What it does show however is the hypocrisy inherent in the NZ position where they are happy to receive intelligence and security benefits,much of which is provided by nuclear powered vessels, but are unwilling to allow such vessels to visit their ports.
NZ has a habit of virtue signalling over various issues while not having to deal with those issues itself.

Tyranny of distance Nu Zulland - and its Maori - awoke to the realities of the Big World during WW I and WW II, and even later in Vietnam.

One day, when the world turns, St Jacinda will be a thing of the past and regarded as a by-way of history.... along with all those of her ilk.......

Methinks that time is not far off....... when the chips hit the fan, there is no time for petty politics of division, preference, and active (not positive) discrimination.

Those like Jacinda who waffle through life on a cloud bed of half baked ideological ideas will vanish once the heat is on.... and it is the offspring of that generation who will pay the price......
