Title: Better board software—question to FD Post by Jovial Monk on Aug 14th, 2021 at 4:55pm
FD said a while back he was going to look for better software and then we would post there but posts from here would not be moved to the new forum using the better software.
That might be the only way to do it, since YABB is so useless and OzPol is a big board. My question to FD is: have you done anything yet to move this to a better/SQL board? |

What's wrong with this one?
If you change software you will get a completely different look an feel. I am used to this one. What would the benefits be. This forum looks unqiue. |

Flip flip flip flip. . .flip to get a post to show. With a big thread civilisations can rise and fall in the time it takes to open the thread.
You think the present look is worth keeping? Anyway, it was FD stated a while ago that he would look into changing to a SQL based board. I am just asking if anything had been done. |

I can only speak from my own experience and I know SFA about this stuff. However....when I went to the Yank Forum I was amazed at the capacity and gadgets available there, even IT idiots like me can work it. No pages failing to flip, no problem posting you tube stuff or having to resize images. And there is much more, including a better 'notification' system. No need to do any of the usual hotlink stuff....just bung in the url and up pops the site, in full. I managed to convince Monk to switch to it and if a stubborn old Dutch bastard like him can make a change, you can bet it is for the better. |

Oi! My parents were married when I arrived! The software my board runs on works like a dream. The “Who wants NOT to be a billaire” thread is over 200 pages long, loads instantly, no need to flip pages. (check it out, go to my board, click on the thread <BLINK> and it is open. Say you write a post and really want Fred Nurk to see it—include “@FredNurk” and he gets notified about your post. PMs there are called Conversations and work like it—you can exchange messages with someone, say mothra and you decide to bring Aussie into the conversation—just takes a click. However, I am not arguing for a change, just asking FD if he has done anything about it. |

Hi Monk,
I'm sure FD really appreciates your advice. ;D |

No need to be mocking or facetious, Bobby. It is genuinely offered information, with merely a question to FD. |

Really? Maybe Monk could become a Gmod here and help run the forum? ;D |

You REALLY are a gormless idiot, aren’t you? As I said in the OP, and repeated a couple posts later—IT WAS FD WHO TALKED ABOUT MOVING TO AN SQL-based BULLETIN BOARD! I was only asking if he had a look yet? Thick! |

phpBB might be worth checking out.
A tech forum I frequent uses it and it works flawlessly. On their home page: The #1 Free, Open Source Bulletin Board Software https://www.phpbb.com/ |

It isn’t that great, but it is better than YABB which isn’t really saying much.

it depends on when I'm on. Some days this forum takes over a minute to turn a page, in the meantime I often view 2 or 3 pages on monks forum whilst I'm waiting for this one to change. The software here is crap |

Well the Yank Board obviously has some good technical genius running it, Monks has hardly had anything done apart from putting on a logo. |

More needs to be done to my forum, yes. Had hoped to have had that done already but real life got in the way
We don’t need to “flip” pages, worry about resizing images and all that crap. Much better Search function too. Fast to find, fast to open pages.. The PM system is a joy to use, unlike this one or the one in phpBB3. They are called “conversations” (private conversations) and are flexible and easy to use. If having a “conversation” with another member you can invite other members to join that conversation. Just wonderful, easy, powerful. If you make a post and want to notify a certain member, let us say MrJones then “@MrJones” will give that member a notification of your post. MrJones is of course fictional ;D ;D ;D ;D Oh—much better smilies. |
