My late Aunt was the secretary of the Scottish Country Dance Society. From a very early age I was dragged along to more social events, dance competitions and ‘Piping in of the Haggis’ ceremonies than I care to remember. I have vivid memories of Burn’s ‘Ode to The Haggis’ being recited before it’s pretended consumption by a large circle of seated attendees. The fascinating scenario of the host’s dogs following the Haggis around the circle as individual portions were surreptitiously dumped behind chairs remains with me to this day. Thanks for the précis/translation. The central point is few can understand Burns if recited in the correct Gaelic accent. I can’t & I heard his poetry often enough.

That single poem, thanks to Scotland and the Scottish, is the reason why we'd rather die for freedom and hang the totalitarian, than live enslaved.

I am fortunate in that my wife came from Ayrshire, only a few miles from where Burns himself was born, and so was able to recite his work with the correct pronunciation and accent. My brother in law is a member of the local Burns Society and is usually called upon to provided the "Address to the Haggis" at Burns Suppers.

I have never been fond of haggis, but my kids love it, and I can say it is quite palatable if prepared properly, which it so seldom is outside Scotland.
