Any experience, expertise?

Aluminium versus uPVC? Thicker single glazed with sound/heat film (aluminium only) or reguli ar but double glazed (aluminium or PVC).

The only glass interface denizen Fwank is licensed for is dark brown glass bottles.

Stick to what you know Fwank.

Depends on what your desired result.

Looks - uPVC is ok.

For impact on heating/cooling costs double or even triple glazed depending on your location.

Ta.
We are leaning towards pvc, double glazed. My concern is pvc withstanding years of direct sun. They assure me it would but it is relatively new in Oz. In England, Northern Europe its all pretty much standard and understandably so. Here aluminium frames still dominate, it seems. I wonder if it's  just habit or for good reason I may have missed.
We are in Sydney and the main windows are north west facing.

Fwank has just exposed his expertise in that activity.

Evidently, Fwank has been defenestrated by an upstanding citizen who was offended by Fwank's rageaholism and is in dire straits.

I have aluminium - but only single glazed.

They are quite old now ... over 20 years and I found that a spray of silicon lube in the tracks makes for long-lasting easy glide.  8-)

good idea.

I converted our aluminium windows to double glazed. Made a big difference.

And painted and sealed all around them too

Aluminium or pvc frame for the double glaze?

I am pretty set on double glazing, for heat and noise insulation. Sitting next to a single glazed window in the morning, I can feel the cold getting into my bones even as the heater is on.

I think with double glazing we wont have to have the heater and a/c on as long as we do with the current single glazed BIG windows.

(Bless me, Greta)

I would go Alloy over PVC for frames in Australia.

PVC frames might offer slightly better insulation in places where snow covers the ground for long periods of time.

Double glazing will reduce heating and cooling costs well worth it in the long run.

Thanks.

What's the aluminium advantage then?
