https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-05-24/canberrans-get-free-registration-for-electric-vehicles-in-act/100160324

Canberrans who buy an electric vehicle can now get two years' free registration under an ACT government plan to get more zero-emission cars on the road.

Free registration is available to Canberrans who buy a new or second-hand zero-emissions vehicle from today until mid-2024.

Stamp duty also free. Wonder how much of a drop that ends up being

Probably won't, since I won't give a poo about paying more tax in return for services.

Er.... not a State....  so much for  your 'education'.

"The overseas experience is clear on this point: any cuts to EV subsidies quickly lead to a significant drop-off in the demand for EVs.

Let’s mention here that these subsidies are highly regressive – it is overwhelmingly high-income owners who purchase EVs, often as second cars. (When a long trip is planned, it is the petrol/diesel car that’s used – the owners aren’t that stupid.)
...
At most, EVs will save between 6 and 10 tons of emissions, after the construction of the vehicle is taken into account.

And note here that most batteries are produced in China using coal as the energy source. This means that one quarter of the typical emissions of a petrol/diesel-powered car are generated at this point for EVs with China-sourced batteries.

Taking the average subsidies to EVs, it turns out that the cost of abatement for EVs can be up to 120 times higher than what can be achieved in the electricity sector. As Faith Birol, head of the International Energy Agency (and no climate sceptic) has stated: ‘If you think you can save the climate with electric cars, you’re completely wrong.’

The bottom line is that EVs are a road to nowhere at this point of time.  They may give their high-income owners a sense of smug satisfaction that they are doing right by the planet, but it’s just a grift by another name."

State/territory its all the same, pedantism.

Not at all.  Territory governments have limited powers compared to States.  The ACT and NT euthanasia laws could be overturned by the Commonwealth. Such State law cannot.
The territories have a different constitutional status as they are not parties to the Federation. They are just big Local Governments with a little bit of extra but making sure they are not the same as the States.  That's  why half a million Tasmanians gave 10 senators while 400 thousand Canberrans have two.
The ACT Police is part of the AFP while State police forces are not. And so on.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, the only non-biased view is yours and whatever you agree with.

EV subsidies favour those who can afford EVs. That is a fact, no matter who states it. Only idiots dismiss facts because they are stated by someone whose opinions they otherwise disagree with. Confusing a fact with an opinion is stupid. Don't do it.

Also note:
The Key to Electric Cars Is Batteries. One Chinese Firm Dominates the Industry.
Beijing built the world’s largest EV market, then pressured foreign car makers to use its batteries

For those days where it is windy or not, the smog would still hang around. But the point is that there would be fewer car exhaust fumes in the central district of Canberra and the high rises being enough to create wind breaks preventing the windiness to blow away the smog.

Why would smog hang around when its windy, fog doesn't hang around when its windy, bushfire smoke doesnt hang around when its windy.

I was going to mention bushfire smoke in my last post. We had a burnoff over a week ago on our mountain. The smoke hung around for days after the fires were put out. But even if it was windy, the smoke would have lingered in town with high rise buildings and the Athelstane range creating wind breaks. Just lucky that the wind direction was heading north when they did the burn off.

I would say that the smog would still be around, even blowing slowly during the rush hour period. But there would still be plenty of people to breathe in the fumes when the cars are on the road in great numbers.
