'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler: Former undisputed middleweight world champion dies aged 66

Former undisputed middleweight world champion 'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler has died at the age of 66.

The American dominated the middleweight division from 1979 until his controversial defeat by Sugar Ray Leonard in April 1987.

"Today, unfortunately my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire," his wife Kay Hagler said.

Hagler fought 67 times during his 14-year professional career, winning 62.

He triumphed on 52 occasions by knockout, while he drew two and lost three times.

In September 1980, Hagler fought Britain's Alan Minter at Wembley Stadium to claim his first world titles, winning the WBA and WBC belts.

His most famous fight came in April 1985 when he fought Thomas 'Hit Man' Hearns over three brutal rounds - a classic known as 'The War'.

Hagler made 12 successful title defences until his defeat by Leonard by a split decision and he retired a year later.

I think the loss to Leonard was a farce.
Leonard produced one of the worst boxing displays of running away from confrontation only to do flurries when cornered. Leonard fought like a Drug Addict and the Judges and Ref supported it against Hagler.
Never seen a Boxer (Hagler) ever exhibit so much frustration in a match.

Hagler was that type of guy who you wanted in a war trench along side you if it came to that.

Billy Buckingham's "Marvelous'' song comes to mind, for Hagler was indeed a 'Marvel'  superhero to Boxing.

1. Head wounds no matter how small are notorious for spewing blood and looking like you been nearly bashed to death. Thats not really indicative in itself. Its head trauma which is the indicator.
2. You can clearly see Hagler keeping up his guard as he comes in whereas Hearns does not so much.
3. Hagler won the fight.

Blood like that is a sign of no clotting. The COVID vaccine started the clotting in his blood.

Always enjoyed Hearn's wick'ed punch like a praying mantis strike. Both good defensively (though a little Tyson version could get in and under Hearns easy) - but both being great punchers - both bound to be hit at times.
