Even without the giant meteorite the day of the dinosaurs was over. They were very specialised and things were changing:

1. Grasslands were appearing, allowing small mammals to thrive. Animals preying on these mammals would also eat dinosaur eggs

2. Conifers were being replaced by flowering, deciduous trees—what did the dinosaurs eat in winter after deciduous trees lost their leaves?

Dinosaurs left behind birds, snakes and corocodiles and alligators.

There was an extinction before the last day of the dinosaurs, the Permian–Triassic extermination. Huge numbers of species and populations were wiped out in the sea and on land, vertebrate and invertebrate.

What was the cause? A 2000ppm increase in atmospheric CO2 due to huge volcanic eruptions as evidenced by the Siberian Traps, huge sheets of solidified lava.

The CO2 would have increased temperatures as it is doing now and acidifying ocean waters, again as is happening now.
