They're ok, a little noisy but not so much in the vehicle, just outside when you're letting it warm up and you're cleaning the windscreen. The amount of noise will depend on the type of vehicle. A van will be noisier than a car

The oil needs changing more often than a petrol engine, and pour a bottle of injector clean in the fuel tank every now and then. My 3lt diesel is very good on milage, 8.8L/100kms on open road at 80-90km/hour

Keeping the oil clean and with clean filters, modern diesels can last 500 thousand to a million ks they reckon. Mine's done only 170,000, it's only run in and goes like a charm. I let it warm up, and when back home let it idle for a minute or two to drop the temp a bit before switching off

The tank must be filled with diesel, not petrol, as some absent minded owners do. The diesel has a sweet smell, both as a liquid and when burnt

Diesels are very low maintenance, just oil, filters and injector clean. Carbon builds up in the intake, but that will blow out with a good run at 100km/h

The gearbox is important, VW gearboxes give trouble and mega bucks to fix. Research gearboxes behind diesels just as much as the engine and vehicle
