When you want to go again, just press the accelerator and the engine coughs into life and you go.

It is more applicable in the US where the red signal are red for a lot longer.

I've driven a Mercedes-Benz diesel with a stop-start feature.  It is quite common in Europe apparently.  It saves a load of fuel but is a bit disconcerting to start with.  Works fine.  Bit of a slower take off from the lights but that is about all.

I have it on thr Forester you can turn  it off but also you just think ahead and take your foot off the bgrake edal early

But your oil pump is not working with the engine off and oil will move down from the head.

And then you will have less oil when you reboot at the top of the engine.

So you will be producing a small amount of premature engine wear.

That suits Mazda, merc and Subaru fine.

Engine dies at 7 years, just after the warranty expires and the consumer buys a new one

I think the technology has improved a bit since the model T.

I hate the damn thing ... it should be an opt in option when you start your car, not an opt out.

In the US you're allowed to turn right with red lights.

Not a fan of this it will also turn AC off in summer the compressor is driven by engine.

The water pump also stops which means water temp increases inside engine. I put a Davies Craig electric water pump in SS Torana so water can still circulate after engine is turned off.

Fuel injected cars have fuel cut on deceleration which means when you lift off throttle and coast (throttle position is 0%) it will cut fuel to injectors until engine speed drops below around 1200 rpm so lifting off throttle and coasting to red light saves fuel and brake pad wear if you are still moving when light turns green you use less fuel getting back up to speed.

true , fuel injection makes it a lot smoother and they would stop the engine close to TDC to make it ready for a restart.

but it is still mainly done to scam the "official" fuel consumption test.

the 'official " fuel consumption test is done on an urban scenario with a lot of stop/start driving.  i think from memory the 45 minute test requires 15 minutes where the vehicle is stopped.  cars use very very little fuel at idle,  but the small reduction in fuel consumption makes mazda subaru and the germans appear to be delivering a better product
