I would have to agree with Phil - much of the Republican party are career politicians - just as bad as the Democrats. However there is a new breed of Republicans who are really more interested in policies than politics. That is Jordon, Meadows, Johnson and others known as the "freedom Caucus" libertarian minded who support America's first non political President - Donald Trump. Now to set Skippy straight. The Supreme court have always had 9 judges. When RBG died that left a vacancy. The Republicans chose a candidate to fill the seat. Thats not, as the Democrats are claiming - "court stacking". Now the Democrats are threatening to increase the number of justices to 12 or more - that is court stacking. |

Thanks for educamating me Skippy! But the fact remains, there are 3 branches of gov, the executive, judicial and legislative. The judicial branch (what we are talking about) is about upholding the essence of the highest law of the land - the constitution. IT is NOT about working outside the law and ignoring the constitution or making new laws. It is a conservative body. |

The Supreme Court of the United States is not just a Conservative Body, it's a Political Conservative Body by design. The Founding Fathers knew this, & if they wanted the Supreme Court to be otherwise they would have chosen a non-political process in which to Nominate & Confirm Justices to the Court. They carefully intended that the process they chose would be political. If the American People want the US Constitution changed, as considered & authorized by the American Founding Fathers, they, & only they, have the power, & the Right, to amend their Sacred Document. Congress can only suggest changes, but only the American People can make any of those suggestions the Law of the Land. The government is permitted to govern only through the express consent of the governed........."We the People"..... .. |

And Trump will now attempt to hammer the final nail into the coffin of the US democracy and steal the election via SCOTUS.
Biden, should he win office, should focus on helping the country recover post-Trump while at the same time the poo out of the courts at every level. |

Regardless of if ACB is suited or qualified, the fact that McConnell and the Senate went on Recess during Stimulus talks at the peak of the pandemic but were willing to pull weekend duty to confirm her is smacking outrageous. Let's say she goes on to be impartial or to be good or to be terrible... She would have been installed purely as part of a political agenda no matter what.

So you really are not in favour of draining the swamp. You prefer your supreme court to be politically corrupt. We had the spectacle of republican senators labelling themselves as liars over this appointment. The have bought themselves and the senate into disrepute. The house of Liars. Including the Liar leader of the senate. They were a disgrace and you happily supported their dishonesty. |

This selection has been a statement against Trump, There was nothing the Left could find to disqualify ACB. They cry that the Court is now six to three, actually John Roberts is as Liberal as any of them. That makes it five to four and of those five, they take the Constitution seriously so they can rule against their personal opinion in favor of what is Constitutional. The Liberal Justices have no problem seeing the Constitution as an obstruction to their opinions.
If not for the hate the Democrats have for the peoples choice for President ACB could have been unanimous! If the Democrats would have had the power to choose their activists this late in the Term they would have done it. The only reason it didn't happen under Obama was because the Republican majority in the Senate would not have approved him! |

Thanks, Panther. You were keen to express your views four years ago why Obama should not be allowed to nominate judges during an erection year. Can you now unequivocally say why the Dems should not, if they win a majority in the senate and have a mandate and the legal right, even up the score? From a constitutional position, I mean. I’m asking you as our residential constitutional expert. |

Title: Re: ACB Confirmation ... Post by mortdooley on Oct 27th, 2020 at 11:09pm
If Obama had a majority in the Senate he would have pushed his choice through, this is all double standard. After all the misery the Left has heaped on Donald Trump he didn't owe them any favors!

Obama tried, that's not in dispute. It's the fact that the very people now who said he shouldn't for the vast cataloug of reasons decided that all of a sudden because they had the power, those reasons didn't matter. You're lucky it's the sides of politics doing this that it is. If it was reversed, the right would be out in force with their guns. Sometimes I can understand the desire. Trump's legacy is worse than we could have ever imagined and the Dems have failed. If they come out and say "there was nothing we could do" they and the US deserve it's fate. "There was nothing we could do" is something that has never crossed the minds of the Republicans. They stand for power, no morals, no honour, just power. The Dems need to take notice. They've tried putting country first. They tried to pass stimulus measures, but the Republicans only cared about power. I don't think the Dems, especially with the upcoming progressive movement, have the talent or the desire to be as ruthless, to poo all over the constitution and exploit the entire country, the people, their voters, for their own gains. Their sense of duty has been their downfall. Hopefully, some up and comers with no shame and the mentality of "what can the country do for me" can rise through the ranks into at least an advisory position to provide some yin to the current leaderships yang (not Andrew). Well played Republicans. May you and your families experience the pain you'll inflict on the country first before the people you've exploited for power, but sadly, that's now how this works... |

@Karnal Karnal, while I take pride in my knowledge concerning my United States Constitution, I never said I was, nor do I consider myself, a self-appointed 'Constitutional Expert'. That said, nowhere in United States Constitution does it say when a Nomination to the Supreme Court can, or can not be made. Furthermore, the United States Constitution also does not specifically stipulate when confirmations can, or can not take place. |
