The Australian white supremacist who killed 51 Muslim worshippers at two mosques in New Zealand last year is facing survivors of his attack as a sentencing hearing gets under way.

Australian Brenton Tarrant is likely to be jailed for life for the rampage.

Tarrant pleaded guilty in March and was convicted of 51 murders, 40 attempted murders and one charge of terrorism.

Survivors and the family members of victims will speak at the four-day hearing.

The hearing will take place at the courthouse in Christchurch, the city where Tarrant carried out the attacks in March 2019.

The first session started on Monday morning,

Covid-19 restrictions mean the main court room is relatively empty.

An additional seven overflow courts within the law complex in Christchurch are being used for survivors and relatives of those killed to follow proceedings.

Tarrant, 29, from New South Wales, had previously denied the charges and was due to face trial in June, before reversing his plea. He now faces a minimum sentence of 17 years, but Justice Cameron Mander, the High Court judge presiding over the case, has the power to sentence him to a full life term with no parole - a sentence never before imposed in New Zealand.

More than 60 people will give in-person victim impact statements at the sentencing hearing. Some have travelled from overseas and undergone a two-week coronavirus quarantine in order to take part.

Chill out, everyone gets labeled.  For example if any islamic person wanted to establish supremacy, they are considered as terrorists.  The same with Asians, they are communists.  The blacks - they are gangsters.   The Aborigines probably got the worse deal, they are considered as drunks and criminals. 

And as to this man in question.  He did not go and kill all these people without reason.  He had a clear motive that is consistent with the white supremacy ideology.  He has a manifesto.  He ranted about it on social media.   And he broadcasted his murders proudly on the internet.   Not only it is not mislabeled, it is not even automatically labelled.  It is because he WANTS to be labelled as such.

What is this 'white supremacist ideology'?  Is it not more of a resistance to other groups intervening and seeking supremacy?  Does that not make the 'white supremacist' (labeled) more of your 'freedom fighter'?

I'm chilled out enough to look at this thing dispassionately and point out the serious deficiencies in the thinking of many on this and similar subjects.... that is one huge difference between my good self and certain other emotion-lead types who post here and everywhere.

I'm not taking sides here - apart from expressing repeatedly my sympathy for the victims and families and uttering my condemnation of the perpetrator and stating clearly that the victims were innocents - I just think that in order to get to some solid conclusions about this kind of thing, we need to look at the factors involved from all angles.... and not just one, through ideological glasses (even if you don't know that is in the horse feed you are being fed)...

NOBODY here EVER supported the actions of Tarrant.

NOBODY here EVER said he was justified.

MOST here called for the highest level of punishment for his crimes, Bobby went the whole hog.

NOBODY here EVER 'blamed the victims'.  Some of us very clearly have stated repeatedly that this group attacked are a peaceful lot of refugees who have done nothing to NZ, and that the perpetrator is a traitor to the white race and is unworthy of it.

Saying that such an event was inevitable is not the same as supporting or justifying it, but it WAS inevitable at some time.  It remains inevitable that there will be further such incidents worldwide.

Those are the facts and they are indisputable.

"Since March 15, 2019 until writing this statement, my heart is yearning for restoration of justice to the victims of the heinous massacre, and a call for the death penalty for the brutal and conscienceless criminal," his statement says.

"Crimes like the one committed on March 15, 2019, are so heinous and inherently wrong that they demand the death penalty to deter such heinous crimes in the future, and to keep the society safe.

"The death penalty for the most heinous murders and the most brutal and conscienceless murderers, such as the terror attack on March 15, 2019, is a must if justice is to prevail.

"To sentence killers like Brenton Harrison Tarrant to less than death, would fail to do justice, because the penalty — presumably a long period in prison — would be grossly disproportionate to the heinousness of the crime."

JaSin is in his own world - as for my post - you understand what is this 'claims' and what the entire comment means?

NOTHING in my post defends or supports Tarrant's actions.... I merely point out the enormous discrepancies in reasoning that go into issues such as this, and refute the claim that there are all these 'white supremacists' running around Australasia doing stuff (one person) and that the very idea of a 'white supremacist ideology' is absurd ... keep up in class.... the same as Ahab and Oooga-Booga, HIS ideas are that he is simply seeking justice and equality.

I'm sure you would readily leap to give reasons for the actions of an Islamic villager whose family was killed by bombs - and show those as a tempering influence on judgement of those actions while pointing out the endless futility of such events... the same rule applies to Tarrant.

As Tim O'Brien said about the My Lai massacre - he could understand it - but he could not condone it.  There is a world of difference, and unless we begin to seek understanding of these issues and their mechanisms, they will continue from all sides - tit for tat.

I say again - nothing in my posts supports Tarrant's actions - but instead seeks understanding of them .... and attempts, futiley it seems, to get youz lot thinking about the realities of these things rather than applying a monochromatic, cardboard cutout 'reality' to them..
