He's not saying forget history, he's saying don't put up monuments to those who lost to keep alive and celebrate what they fought for, in this case slavery. So put these statues in a history museum sure because it is an important chapter in US history.

The problem is the statues were not erected for educational purposes. That's what this is about.

When many of these statues went up there was literal white supremacy behind them. Take the statue in Alamance County that was erected in 1914.

During the ceremony, the leader of that counties KKK chapter gave a speech at it's commencement ceremony saying an opportunity,

"to recall the achievements of the great and good of our own race and blood"

Or the largest confederate monument which is carved onto the side of Stone Mountain in Georgia is located on the literal birthplace of the KKK in the 20th century, and it was completed in the 70's...

You don't celebrate and honour dead terrorists which the confederacy were. They fought their own country and their people over the right to keep slaves.

Putting up these statues at the times the majority of them were erected was to send a deliberate message to the decendants of these slaves, it always has been and it always will be. You can make it about history and honouring the dead but this is just lies to fight against equality.

I don't see you demanding we put up statues of Osama Bin Laden or the actual terrorists who flew the planes at the world trade centre site?

Confederates opposed states rights, specifically the right of Northern states not to support slavery. It was in big part because of the economics and politics behind it, but it was still slavery.

I would suggest you do more research, but it appears that you've Googled the answer that you want and found sources that gave it to you, so any more "research" would just be a waste of time.

That said, what I would recommend you read is a document titled, Confederate States of America - Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union.

Four days after South Carolina seceded on Dec. 20, 1860, they adopted this document. In it, South Carolina laments the election of a new president "whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery."

State leaders indeed are talking about "states rights" but not in the way most people think today.

They are against states rights and they name the states and they name the rights that really upset them.

Specifically, South Carolina spells out grievances with 13 Northern states that had passed local laws that "render useless" the federal Fugitive Slave Act. South Carolina is angry at New York for denying slaveholders the right to transport slaves through its territory, and at Ohio and Iowa for refusing to surrender escaped slaves charged with crimes in Virginia.

It's angry at several Northern states for giving freed blacks citizenship and even the right to vote (a decision that was then the responsibility of the states, not the federal government).

These northern laws were essentially an attempt to hold federal slave policy at bay using states’ rights and this is what the Confederates took up arms against their fellow Americans to fight against.

Like most people, you have the notion of "states rights" backwards in this case. They were fighting for slavery and against the states right they didn't like, not for them.

Given that many like you consider anyone who disagrees with Trump to be a traitor, I don't see how you can let the Confederacy off after they took up arms against the Union who were the soldiers of the United States under the President.

They were traitors.

Some even call them terrorists but I don't consider this "fair" because the definition of a terrorist has changed in recent decades and at the time they wouldn't have been considered so.

But they are traitors who fought in favour of slavery. This is why their statutes, especially those erected during times when the topic of racial inequality was front and centre at the time had the intention of sending a very clear message, a message that is no longer acceptable today.

That message was a reminder and a reassertion of white power over black Americans. They even had KKK chapter hierarchy give commencement speeches in some cases.

I know it's tempting in order to continue to support Trump to rewrite history and claim those wanting to tear down the statues are trying to erase history, but it's all just excuses to excuse the reality that Trump is supporting racism and fostering it as a campaign tool in this case.

That is how desperate he and his supporters are at the moment.

There are entire systems built with controls and measures to keep them down and stifle their voices.

A solid body of evidence finds no structural bias in the criminal-justice system with regard to arrests, prosecution or sentencing. Crime and suspect behavior, not race, determine most police actions.

In 2019 police officers fatally shot 1,004 people, most of whom were armed or otherwise dangerous. African-Americans were about a quarter of those killed by cops last year (235), a ratio that has remained stable since 2015. That share of black victims is less than what the black crime rate would predict, since police shootings are a function of how often officers encounter armed and violent suspects. In 2018, the latest year for which such data have been published, African-Americans made up 53% of known homicide offenders in the U.S. and commit about 60% of robberies, though they are 13% of the population.

The police fatally shot nine unarmed blacks and 19 unarmed whites in 2019, according to a Washington Post database, down from 38 and 32, respectively, in 2015. The Post defines “unarmed” broadly to include such cases as a suspect in Newark, N.J., who had a loaded handgun in his car during a police chase. In 2018 there were 7,407 black homicide victims. Assuming a comparable number of victims last year, those nine unarmed black victims of police shootings represent 0.1% of all African-Americans killed in 2019. By contrast, a police officer is 18½ times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer.

On Memorial Day weekend in Chicago alone, 10 African-Americans were killed in drive-by shootings. Such routine violence has continued—a 72-year-old Chicago man shot in the face on May 29 by a gunman who fired about a dozen shots into a residence; two 19-year-old women on the South Side shot to death as they sat in a parked car a few hours earlier; a 16-year-old boy fatally stabbed with his own knife that same day. This past weekend, 80 Chicagoans were shot in drive-by shootings, 21 fatally, the victims overwhelmingly black. Police shootings are not the reason that blacks die of homicide at eight times the rate of whites and Hispanics combined; criminal violence is.

I know I'm not really part of this discussion (but when has that stopped me before!!!!), but what I've learned from my travels abroad is that most of the Australians I've encountered on my travels, those who are the type here at home to insist that immigrants speak the language, don't wear a towel on their heads, get a "real job" rather than driving a taxi or working at 7/11, they make no such efforts when they live, work or even holiday abroad.

I visited an Australian Pub in Singapore when I was living there for 1.5 years early on in my stay. I never went back.

Many of the people there, while they may have been well lubricated (it's still no excuse) were treating the local like scum, imitating racist version of their accents and treating the wait staff (women) like rub and tug sex slaves. It was smacking embarrassing.

Not that it's acceptable anywhere, but Singapore is not Bali or Thailand...

I had to overcome that stereotype with every person I met through work or when trying to make friends.

Shamelessly, rather than learning an official language (even though it is technically Enlgish there) I did get myself a copy of the Cockford Singlish Dictionary, one of the few hardcovers left since they went online in order to be more familiar with the slang.

It's amazing how 2 simple words can convey such strong feeling or emotions and I was able to stand a little taller than the average angmo there.

But to the point, most of the people you hear locally making demands about simulation etc, they would never attempt to do the same thing if they found themselves living in a foreign country. They would make it clear they were proud of their Australian heritage, their mateship and have a go attitude and be completely oblivious to how they'd treated migrants in their own country and how hypocritical they're being.

We Australian are the worst overseas. While I hate being tarred by the same brush and having to overcome the stereotype, I completely understand why.

I can only share yet another anecdotal story, but when I was growing up, I spent 2 years at a private school on the Gold Coast. Hated it, there were no girls which as an 8 & 9 year old was already a problem... What a terrible foreshadowing... aaaaaanyway...

I made friends with a Sikh boy, the "turbinator" as his nickname was. His family were recent refugees and he had won a scholarship to the school. This meant he was the "poor" kid and was shunned by most of the others there.

I was in a similar boat because my parents thought I'd get a better education there and couldn't really afford to send me, but before their divorce, they at least tried.

So the two of us were the poor kids so of course, we became friends...

Anyway, when I went to his house one day, they didn't have much, they ate with their hands, it was all a very different and shocking experience.

But the one thing I'll never forget is how close the family was. How respectful the children were. They'd been through heartache which I didn't know about at the time, I was 8, but I realised how different we were.

When the kids finished their dinner, they'd clean up. They didn't swear at their parents (they'd get a beating if they did), they kept their rooms clean and were not only respectful to their parents but their neighbours too, all adults.

This was new to me. The kids I were around, especially those from the private school, they were whiney little runs who had never heard the word No in their lives.

So while my friend and his family never abandoned their culture, they didn't come from much or have much, they at least helped me from a very young age realise that the world wasn't just like what happened inside the walls of my house.

My experience, my family, that's not the benchmark of "how it should be". There are other ways, other cultures, even if I didn't know what a culture was at the time.

Living with, or around people who are different be it int he same street or even the same community, it add more than you'd think.

BUT, even as a kid, I remember having empathy for others. Without that, I don't think a person would be able to gain anything from experiencing other people, other cultures, other family structures etc, and it's sadly those people who grow up to say that immigrants divide, fracture and degrade the culture of the placed they move to.

Effective governance requires compromise, trust, and mutual respect. Gingrich’s new version of Republican had no interest in that. He destroyed the bipartisan structures for governing and even resorted to name-calling and conspiracy theories.

A straight line can be drawn from Gingrich’s “Contract with America” to the tea party in 2009. Another outsider movement characterized by distrust of government, expertise, and experience, the tea party helped elect a ‘rogues’ gallery of lawmakers.
