I’ve been thinking, there are some that like dogs better than cats, and vice versa, as this sub forum is named Cats and Critters, it would attract more posters if we had dogs included in the title.

Can a change be made? 🤗

It does sound like a good idea.
Gives a new member a better idea of what this Board is about.

Critters, Pets and Wildlife is my offering.

Cats and Critters is fine. “Critters” covers a very wide range! Flatworms, nematodes, earthworms, insects, crustacea, Mollusca, Chordata (sea squirts) fish, amphibians, reptiles, Aves and mammals.

May not have a snail as pet but might be a prize exhibit in an aquarium.

The original Mod liked Cats I suppose (if that was Herbert, cats is what he liked) and Cats and Critters is inclusive enough for me.

They say, nothing like sealing an envelope to inspire a fresh thought.
Well as soon as I logged out I thought of another title contender.

Nah, the name is fine. With me as Mod the emphasis may be a little bit more towards canines rather than felines but will not be exclusive—be interested to find more info re chooks, like a larger backyard flock like 6 hens.

Should I bite the bullet and buy some meatbirds? Idea does not appeal—plucking etc—but I do eat poultry so. . .

Personally I think it should be left as it is.    It didn't even need a Mod.  It was a nice little forum that chugged along with nice posts and cute stories and it is Herbert's legacy.

It could have just been left alone in memory of Herbert.

BUT, as usual, someone rides in demanding changes not only to Cats & Critters but now it's Environment, Food, Tavern, Hunting and Fishing and all it does is create chaos, arguments and division.

Herbert's good name was dragged through the mud with atrocious lies and that's a really horrible thing to do.  It's too late now but if it aint broke it doesn't need fixing imo.

Herbert could well have just been remembered here in peace with the forum he created and loved.

Just my opinion!

Having said that.  Vote 1 JaSin!

It’s nice to want to keep a title in memory of someone as BA wrote earlier, it was good for the time, maybe a change could draw more to the forum? Isn’t that what’s required now? Isn’t what’s best for FD that’s required? It’s a year of change, establishments are being disestablished, the changes made due to covid is now the “new normal”.

So it kind of came to mind to include dogs in the title somehow.
I’m sure Herbert would not have minded dogs included.
After all, us dog people love and nurture our dogs, that become a family member, that ward off strangers lurking about with their warning barks.
And when they depart to cross the rainbow bridge, we grieve and miss them terrible.
So including dogs 🐕 does not seem unreasonable for our forum with new members coming into the fold.

if the members would like a name change I will go along with it.we still remember herb very clearly lols...and sadly he was driven away from the forum...but if its time for change thats ok as well  I am sure herb would agree..

Herbert had weird ideas about dogs: that they would revert to wild dog in an instant and bite their owners. Pinkeye, forget what name she used when she used to post here, did something unwise once in feeding her dogs and got bitten. I am missing a sliver of the tip of my left thumb teasing Demi about eating her dinner. Our fault, our dogs were just anxious to eat!

It is actually cats that turn feral much quicker than a dog would.

As to not needing a Mod—nonsense! This whole place is dying. Nothing wrong with having someone try to keep a part of it thriving! Just having this election has revived this board. I would keep that going, Jasin would give up after a couple of weeks as we all know.

I think the new mod should have some interest in animals as a whole.. and do their best to keep it so..

one new mod changed what was an every day board into a political off shoot   or a useful forum to attack other members...

with just the odd thread on topics related to its title....

it now has very few comments from other members...

I have tried to demonstrate some knowledge on these matters codsy!

I can mention some dog psychology/sociology—how not to have dogs turn bad, not have kids bitten etc.

I was a trainee instructor for a while—bought a dozen books on dog training  :)  Could dig some out.

Once again I'll repeat.
I did not give up on Travel, hence why I still post there.
I improved Travel (which had no Mod at all) at a time it's next door neighbour 'Real Estate' (Lisa Jones) was removed entirely and Travel looked like going too. Along came another Member who I thought would make it even better and they have done so of their own choosing. Agnes did similar with AiA and Tavern - for her own reasons.

So it's obvious you don't 'listen' to people Monk.

Emma (Pinkeye at Monks) was a lovely lady who had Dogs designed to protect her from a very nasty form of evil lurking in the shadows. Considering the duress she has suffered in her life. Maybe she just didn't have the energy one day and she got nipped. Even Innuit Masters of Husky teams get nipped. I'm sure she would prefer to have her Dogs somewhat less designed to protect her from something in her life that she should not have to put up with.

Reminds me of when my daughter was in high school and worked in the deli at the local supermarket part time!

Anyway she bought home a ham bone and gave it to our border collie.

In terms of modding this board requires a couple minutes a month, tops. A little bit more time just broadening the range of subjects a little.

One time, hearing some commotion from the run I went to investigate: Demi was in the run eating something, can’t remember what, I had put there for the birds with clearly the calm and certain intent to have chicken for second course!  :)

No foxes in Tasmania I believe. Enough empty country—and rabbits*—around for a fox to do OK. Hills not far out of town they could live in with the odd poultry raid.

I would like a mix, 2-3 good layers and some “pencilled” birds, will put up some pictures this evening—be out most of today.

I see metal birdnetting all around my orchard of apple and pear trees and a coop off to the side—roughly 400sqm for the birds to roam.



*I had spread hardwood chips around my fruit trees, peastraw down each row between the trees. All the hardwood mound showed sign of rabbits digging, none of the peastraw did!

Yes, 'critters' covers everything - a critter is an animal.

The inclusion of 'cat's in the title tells the reader exactly what sort of animals are being discussed - i.e. pets.

The inclusion of 'cats' also alliterates the title, to make it more memorable.

I'm sort of new around here in a way. Been a member for years but absent and thought I'd pop onto the board.
From my point of view, the name cats & critters is fairly inclusive, you get the sense it is a board about animals and that is the main point you'd want to get across.
Wouldn't worry me if the name was tweaked or anything, but just saying, cats & critters is descriptive.
I would enjoy reading informative posts too, as someone mentioned. I've got 2 dogs, for the record. Star and Ringo. :)

no but some peoples memories fade slower than others..

maybe you havent noticed that.....in th e past and I mean real past we had some really really nice members 
one by one they left  no one seems to care all that much at the time...but then one day we wake up and the place has become a place full of tit for tat nasty..... threads become a place to see who can outsmart and be the nastiest..

suddenly we remember what we used to have....decent conversation arguments for sure but  not entire threads...

and if those "nice" people had their own board it could be a safe place for those who dont like all the slagging off,to go too for a break.....

now we are driven to joining other forums to take a break.. :(

I wouldn't really think of a Horse or Elephant as a 'Critter' and sure Herb was great - but Herb is gone. I doubt he would care if the Board became more universal.

Animal Kingdom kinda covers it all - for both Wild, Domesticated and Petted.

Maybe we can create a Board for Monk: Monsters Inc ;)

Mark and Steve knew what they were doing, you obviously don't.

Besides, your not being asked to captain anyone. Only to moderate the board. That you don't know the difference highlights why you shouldn't be a mod.

Taylor and Waugh were confident with their abilities and allowed their other players to use their potentials in their own individual ways. The Windies under Lloyd were the same.
I do that with Members who participate in a Board which I would Mod.
Clarke & Smith were/are all about themselves over the team. Captains are considered the role model for Best and Fairest.
Clarke caused a schism and his little biff with Katich was an example of his 'celebrity' ego. Smith allowed the toxicity of Warner to ruin the team and followed him as if he was the Captain (The Whaling ship Essex is a good example of this). Eventually 'cheating' came into the side. Things people do to win. ::)
Cricket is a 'Team' sport and even Bradman was 'disliked' by his team-mates. Pretty sad when it's all about one player in a Team sport.

I could add more, but I would rather eat a bowl of water with a fork than put up with your ignorant opinions 'Sandpaper Smith'.

I have posted some “tasters” of information I can provide, mainly in relation to dogs. I want to learn more about keeping chickens.

There is such a comforting, oh so domestic sound to chickens “beau buck buck buck”  ;D  So amazing to look at 3 birds and think of the 5 neurons between them  ;D

The have powerful little claws tho! Always scratching the ground looking for worms and insects. Some people seem surprised that chickens are red hot carnivores! Have a look!
