Title: Shares - .. misfortune is another mans opportunity
Post by Redmond Neck on Mar 19th, 2020 at 12:53pm
I have been thinking this volatility on the Stock Markets should present an opportunity for savvy investors to buy some blue chip shares when they are down.

It would require one being prepared to wait out the turn around and of course they could go down further in the meantime.

Any ideas?

I guess one should be after ones that pay high dividends, but will that still be the case after the recovery which may be 18 months away.

Here is a list of the currently paying the best dividends

I'm not very share market savy, but i think you should rule out the quantas shares for now. They might not survive depending on how long this drags on.

Sydney airport parking sounds good. Have you seen what they charge for parking over there?

It's almost better than a printing press with current currency plates

If nobody's flying, nobody's parking.

I can see why Italy has botched it's response to the bat flu - it's full of Italians like you - can't think beyond your noses.

The car park is not going anywhere. And given that it's all automated, it doesn't have a large staff to maintain. It'll still be there when the virus ends. Qantas, no ... but the car park. Definitely.

I can see why thinking long term is not your thing.

They said that the GFC was a once in a lifetime opportunity for anyone brave enough to buy shares when they bottomed out.

The risk of course is that the company goes bust or the whole world economy goes bust (which isn't out of the question)

I bought some Telstra shares when they were at $2.98. I'll see how that goes

Go BHP and RIO.  When we get past this China will launch the mother of all stimulus packages.

Start DCA now.

Probably not a bad idea to buy shares in a company whose name you can spell.

and? If I'm not share market savy and yet I know that you don't need to spell the company name to buy the shares, how cretinous does that make you in regard to the share market when you thought it mattered?

Being able to spell the name of the company you invest in suggests you've done at least some research to see if it's a good company or not.

Didn't they teach you that in your Mesa meeting?

You'd need to have balls as large as an elephant to buy shares now
especially if it's all of your life savings.

Looks like Crown casino will be closed soon.

My thoughts are that "Share Markets" are likely to go DOWN by 50% plus!
Unfortunately, A GLOBAL PANDEMIC IS NOT THE ONLY THING IMPACTING MARKETS, although those in positions of influence would NOT WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT!
Also IMPACTING MARKETS, ARE;
1) DEMOGRAPHICS
2) ENERGY ISSUES
3) CLIMATE CHANGE

As I said, "Share Markets" are likely to go DOWN by 50% plus, BUT JUST HOW MUCH THE FALL/S WILL BE, IS UNKNOWABLE!

Agreed.

I think there are further drops ahead and it is going to get very ugly.

If the valuations drop back to where they were during the GFC, then there are very very big drops still to come.  :(

Yes. It has been far more accelerated than the GFC drop. Too fast you could say. It's not just something that affected Political & Military based nations playing that silly SuperPower Game over pizza. It's something that has affected 'EVERY' nation on the planet really. Even the Pitcairn Islanders are not letting anyone come to their islands while they molest the children.

Reminds me of something I saw a few years back (I think someone used it as their signature on another forum):

The Internet is full of scams.
Let me show you how to avoid them for just $19.95

Wonder if it was the "Barefoot Investor"?

You might be right.
The Banks invented the Virus  :D so every nation can go further into dept as they run out of money giving out stimulus packages - when the true wealth is not money, it's assets.
Owning Countries is a sure way to real wealth and power.
Countries are just like Corporations and Companies - they can be bought and sold.

But also hinting on what the world is progressing to.
Nations are like Companies, Corporations.
Who will you be working for?

...is ScoMo working for the USA, like the Gov-General works for the UK?
