Schools to stay open for now

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australian schools should remain open for the time being, despite growing calls for them to shut to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Speaking after a special national cabinet meeting today to decide what course of action the nation should take to slow the spread of the disease, Mr Morrison said shutting schools down would do more harm than good.

"People are naturally anxious about the issues of schools," he said.

"As the British chief medical officer observed over the last couple of days, the issue of wide scale closure of schools, and it may seem counter-intuitive, but the advice is this could be a very negative thing in terms of impacting on how these (epidemic) curves operate, for two reasons.

"When you take children out of school and put them back in the broader community, the ability for them to potentially engage with others increases that risk. That's the understanding we had.

"Also issues of herd immunity which relate to children. The other is the disruption impact that could have and put at great risk the availability of critical workers such as nurses, doctors and others who are essential in the community because they would have to remain home and look after their children.

"So while it may seem counterintuitive, there (are) very good reasons why you would not be moving to broadscale closures of schools. That could make the situation worse, not better.

"The states and territories are not moving in that direction."

The PM said the matter would be reassessed on Friday.

This won't do anything. Chinese students being asked to self-isolate abroad before coming here were caught on social media taking pictures in groups at beaches, etc. A man in Sydney who tested positive was found at a western-Sydney grocery store despite being told to self-isolate. This isn't good enough. Need to ban all incoming flights for at least the next three weeks.

Throughout the whole thing Morrison has been worried about one thing and one thing only ... money. He is more concerned with what it will do for the economy, and his budget surplus, than he is about peoples lives. Now as PM, of course he should be worried about the economy, but not over and above the lives of our citizens

He should have shut the borders when this first started, or at the very least, imposed a 2 week isolation on anyone coming into the country.

I've been reading comments from residents in Italy and one common message however is that the Italian govt. should have closed down the country much earlier.

I'm not in "panic mode". But look at Italy and South Korea. Look at China. They didn't grasp the seriousness of this pandemic until it was already too late. Thousands of people have died already. The only way to stop the same happening here is to get out ahead of this early, because once we're in winter and its flu system, our health system will go into meltdown.

Actually, the announcements today are pretty good.

The orders for all international arrivals will be enforced by state authorities.

QLD police will be doing random checks on people given isolation orders with very large fines. Hope all other states do the same.

I reckon schools should be out from Monday, but I can see the point about services having to continue.

Perhaps secondary schools should be shut as they don't need baby sitters.

Still nothing being done to address the panic buying. It's so bad now that one supermarket I saw today had given up on toilet paper and filled the toilet paper shelves with Easter eggs.

The amount of items stripped from shelves was unbelievable. Toilet paper, tissues, pasta, pasta sauce, eggs, meat ...

We need strong leadership to address this and we need it now.

Some ideas to consider:
* Anyone selling these items on Ebay for a profit should be audited by the ATO. It's pretty likely that they won't declare this income.
* Rationing for high-demand items should be introduced. Every household receives ration cards for these items for every person in the household. No ration card, no purchase.
* Anyone who is caught panic buying should be forced onto compulsory income management for 12 months with a $50-a-week cash allowance. They need to learn strong lessons about budgeting.

I thought Morrison's reasons for not closing schools to be pathetic.  First reason was that kids would be safer at schools than in the general, population.  Second reason was that if kids could not go to school, parents can't go to work.  (Gee, what happens over all school holiday periods.)

That graph and his stuff about flattening the curve.  ALL plagiarised from overseas.  (I was impressed when I first saw it and referred to it on overseas Forums....and was handed my arse on a platter.)

What's really going to twist their brains later on is finding out that this epidemic of panic buying is pushing household consumption for the June quarter into the March quarter, thus increasing the chances of both quarters being negative. Two negative quarters in a row is a technical recession.

What's relevant is that the economy is going to take a significant hit in the June quarter as well as the March quarter. The chaos is just getting started. The job losses have started, look at tourism and other employment with large crowds to see why. Convention centres are closing. Sports are being played before empty stadiums. Soon they may not be going ahead at all. When the panic buying runs its course, retail is going to be next.

While COVID-19 will be rightly blamed for this, some share of the blame must lie with the Federal government for not acting quickly enough.

I couldn't give a flying bugger about the economy. My question about kids was not a did like Greg saying hope the authorities take my kids away. I'm asking, how many mouths in your house do you have to feed?

I have a 3 year old and a 13 year old, and if schools are shut down, I'll be getting a mates year 12 boy whose in boarding school until his parents can return from overseas.

So I have up to 5 mouths to feed. What if we all get put in lockdown for a fortnight?

What if both my wife and I get whacked with it at the same time and can hardly drag ourselves out of bed, and all our family support network gets it?

Chinese students being asked to self-isolate abroad before coming here were caught on social media taking pictures in groups at beaches, etc. A man in Sydney who tested positive was found at a western-Sydney grocery store despite being told to self-isolate. This isn't good enough. Need to ban all incoming flights for at least the next three weeks. you do realise there is a HUGE ripple affect   from everything the govt does dont you?.... have you seen any country close the doors in or out overnight?.... it cant happen it sounds simple but it never is....you are in PANIC MODE   calm down..... this hasnt affected our imported goods  YET....what will all you PANIC PEOPLE DO THEN?... wheres Albo he sees to be in the land of the lost once again   have you noticed how he disappears in every crisis....talk about AWAL> I'm not in "panic mode". But look at Italy and South Korea. Look at China. They didn't grasp the seriousness of this pandemic until it was already too late. Thousands of people have died already. The only way to stop the same happening here is to get out ahead of this early, because once we're in winter and its flu system, our health system will go into meltdown.

I've thought about this a bit having a child in yr 8.

Not all schools / families will have have the ability to effectively teach online and many kids won't have the dedication to be taught online.

Don't judge him by his media performance, where he's trying to claim credit for the work of others. Take a look at what his government is doing.

Most of the stimulus measures won't commence until the end of April. That's five weeks away. He's pretty much guaranteed a recession by doing that. Where's the urgency?

The RBA cut interest rates last Thursday, outside of their usual cycle, possibly for the first time ever. That's the kind of urgency we need here. We're not getting it from this government. They're going to sit around doing nothing for a month while the economy collapses.

It's about to get worse. Many households have astronomical mortgages that they will no longer be able to service. Expect a lot of mortgagee auctions in the next six months and significant falls in the housing market.

I suggest you not form your views on how well Morrison and his government handles this health crisis until it is past and the extent of the damage is clear. By then, you will know whether they've done well or whether they've stuffed it up so badly that they are destined for a decade or two in the political wilderness.

Hate to say it but I do agree. Morrison has been a terrible PM but he is doing OK with this. He did start too slow but is now trying to get it right. I doubt anyone would be perfect there will be mistakes that would have been the case no matter who was in the job

Yes, he's doing better than I thought he would, but only because my expectations were so low. I think he's still dragging his feet.

Shut everything down and get this over with. His procrastination are making people sick. Everything is going to go into lock down sooner or later, just do it now and lets get this over and done with. He can't possibly think that if he waits he won't have to do it, can he?

I think he is right to wait. We are going to get a full 6 months of virus season the US and europe only got about 3 months.

I think what has been done is enough for now but another kick a bit later may help more. I think that going early may have little impact overall. You may be right with this but maybe not.

They're about to start forcibly isolating all arrivals by having them escorted to hotels to be quarantined for 14 days.

They should have been doing that earlier, a month ago. They flew the first batch from China to Christmas Island. The second batch were isolated in Darwin. Controversial at the time, but in hindsight it was reasonable. What happened since? They stopped isolating people, and left them to their own devices. Not everyone took it seriously. Cases in Australia exploded.

No, they haven't handled it well. Would a Labor Federal government done much better? I doubt it, mostly due to advice and experience not being readily available in Australia.

If this government has any shred of competence left, they would commence a Royal Commission into the handling of this pandemic after it's over. It hasn't been handled well, and we need such an inquiry to figure out what went wrong and to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Morriscum will  be worried if his Government oversees a recession under his lack of leadership....After criticizing Labor during the GFC for spending too much Morriscum has obliterated the debt and needs to show something for the amount of money he is splashing around....If the stimulus fails to avoid a recession Morriscum will rightly be condemned for doing too little too late as he twiddles his thumbs while the nation is in crisis....A do nothing stand for nothing dickhead IMO!!!

No.  He'll emerge trying to look like a concerned 'leader' to announce that our 'experts' have advised that it's ok now to relax the ruinous lock down a bit

let's face it … we're living under it and have been for ages

So as I've suggested many times, why should we burden ourselves with the cost of a fake government, here in Oz?  Why pay a ransom to what are … to be polite .. mere lackeys who mouth scripts written for them by their actual owners?  Let's scrap politicians altogether.  We don't need them.  They do nothing and they decide nothing.  They simply do as they're told and then pass it on to us.  Why pay for what are ... to be polite again … simply errand boys for the world government?  These political middle-men aren't worth a tenth of what we pay them.  It would be cheaper to give all Aussies a free phone and then the actual destroyers of our lives could simply text with their insane whims, fake wars, fake terrorism, fake viruses, etc.


We need to put it to the vote.  After all, our fake government spent 120 million of our real dollars to run a fake 'yes' campaign.  So let's have a say in whether or not we need, in any way, the bunch of stooges who simply obediently follow the leader without question
