And Australia will have to tow the line since no one here makes clunkers anymore.

Britain to ban the sale of new gas, diesel and hybrid cars from 2035
"We know as a country, as a society, as a planet, as a species, we must now act," said Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

By Rachel Elbaum and Reuters
LONDON — Britain will ban the sale of new gas, diesel and hybrid vehicles from 2035, five years earlier than planned, in an attempt to reduce air pollution and fossil fuel emissions, the government announced on Tuesday.

Britain's step amounts to a victory for electric cars that if copied globally could hit the wealth of oil producers, as well as transform the car industry and one of the icons of 20th Century capitalism: the automobile itself.

The U.K. isn’t alone in its efforts. More than a dozen countries around the world have announced plans to crack down on new sales of gas and diesel vehicles in the next decade or two. France plans to ban the sale of fossil fuel-powered cars by 2040 and Norway's Parliament has set a non-binding goal that by 2025 all cars should be zero emissions.

In addition to bringing forward to the date of the ban on new sales of gas and diesel vehicles, the government also included hybrid vehicles in the ban for the first time. It said that it would bring forward the date even closer if it is possible.

Last year, the U.K. pledged to cut its greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050, one of the most ambitious targets of any leading economy. The ban on sales of new gas and diesel vehicles fits into that goal.

"We know as a country, as a society, as a planet, as a species, we must now act," said Prime Minister Boris Johnson at a launch even for a U.N. Climate Change Conference planned for November in Glasgow, Scotland, known as COP26.

According to experts, the targets of countries to ban sales of new gas and diesel vehicles won’t be effective without accompanying action.

“Those targets need to be complemented by whole range of measures at the national and regional level, such as informing consumers about the vehicles on offer or building of the necessary charging infrastructure,” said Peter Mock, managing director of the International Council on Clean Transportation in Europe.

In Britain, diesel and gasoline models still account for most new vehicle registrations in Britain. However, registrations of electric vehicles rose 144 percent between 2018 and 2019, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

If China bans petrol cars the sale of coal will increase , probably raising the emissions of CO2 .

If Thorium power takes off we'll have nothing to
worry about.
Cheap, unlimited, safe power
- plenty to charge up electric cars.

Not many British ones either.  ;)

But of course 2035 is a long way down the track. Whether the plan survives until then is moot.

And the distances in Britain - so vast. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Range anxiety can be solved very simply with a 12-hour endurance race, limited to passenger electric vehicles in production, vehicles only allowed to recharge using unmodified chargers.

They will be made in china like everything else ! Bad luck you and socko sat there bagging Tesla all of these years instead of following them and coming up with your own home grown products to create lots of jobs and growth. And what was scumo's reaction to Bill Shortens policies on electric cars at the last election ? Oh the poor tradies will have to upgrade their work vehicles. How terrible for the poor tradies that they no longer have to take it up the arse at the fossil fool bowser and on parts on service. Poor tradies :D LOL

Most people do not drive that far to work or down to the shops so an electric vehicle will suit most peoples needs....With solar panels and battery installed at you home you can recharge your vehicle for nothing....In a country like Australia solar power is a no brainer!!!

Sorry it wasn't a brick it was a steel ball.

"Tesla boss Elon Musk has released via social media a video showing the Cybertruck’s side glass can withstand a strike from a metal ball, after two windows shattered during an embarrassing demonstration at the vehicle’s unveiling in Los Angeles.

Musk was left red faced after a stunt to demonstrate the strength of the Tesla Cybertruck’s “armour glass” failed not once but twice in front of a live global audience."

It will certainly hit the grey nomads hard.

They will be buying second hand diesel cars and having them rebuilt to tow their vans.

Getting Diesel may eventually be problem
So they will have to convert their cars into steam engine vehicles running off coal and anything else that burns

Lots of old, converted steam powered smoke belching old tanks driving through Sydney.
Towing old vans in convoy, stopping anywhere there is something combustible to fuel their trucks.
Breaking into fire hydrants to fill up their water tanks.

Won't that be fun?

And all the little city yuppies running around with their hands in the air
Flapping their weak limp wrists.
And crying about all the smoke.

The steam chariots will circle in the parks and fight off the greenies.
Throwing colonoscopy bags and used sanitary napkins at them as the greenies circle with their placards.

Old and feeble Greta the insulted screaming at them from her wheel chair.
Still uneducated
Still rude and obnoxiously yelling stupid things.

The world is still going through climate change
China now uses 100 million tons of coal a day
India now has less than 1 cubic meter of space per person, and are still perverts.
The muzzos have all died out in a mass suicide bombing attempt
Which failed when someone shouted " Muhammid was a nutcase"
And they all blew each other up at the same time.

Australian politicians have just given themselves unlimited access to all the money they want, every day.

Australian abbos now have the highest employment ever achieved, 11 %
But they have sold all their land to the Chinese who immediately evicted them all and set up mines.

Trump is entering his 90th year as precedent
America is the only country on earth were people live a happy comfortable life.
The US borders are protected with the most advanced weaponry ever made, which is used without hesitation.

Yes, what a world.

While the video doesn't account for a conversion efficiency of 20% for petrol and 30% for diesel, petrochemical fuels are still the better energy storage medium:

Why? Farmers are looking for any way to reduce their costs, reducing fuel use would be a saving.

Agreed.  The ICE is a work of absolute efficiency, effectiveness and convenience.  To declare other is a clear sign that over educated fools have officially reached peak stupid. Alternatively, their agenda is on display...to anyone with a functioning brain cell.

So why does it need  a massive cooling system and how much energy is thrown away as heat and heating up brake rotors ?

And why does it need constant maintenance otherwise it will fail catastrophically ? Hardly call that a "work of absolute efficiency, effectiveness and convenience" :D LOL

Can you at least be realistic?

At the moment, convenience in terms of refuelling, ICE wins.

EVs have improved massively, but they are still behind

Poor petal. Trying so hard to be relevant.

Have you bought your new EV yet? Or even a second hand one? If not why not?

Range anxiety?

At the moment, there is no EV that fits my particular needs. ONce there is, I will look at it.

Well then keep taking it up the arse at the fossil fool bowser and on parts and service. Be my guest. BTW someone said they can get 400k's out of a Tesla Model 3 !! Try walking that distance next time ;)

Jesus christ, I'm on your side you idiot. I'm simply saying that currently as it stands, no EV fits my particular needs, unless you can point me to a on the market EV, that has the ability to really go off road.\

your unusual needs are of no consequence to the general driving public. :D LOL

Quite a lot of people drive off road. E.g. I was reading an article that one of the biggest groups pestering Toyota fro hybrids was farmers.

I doubt grass roots farmers would be doing that, perhaps a greenie infiltraitor in one of the lobby groups??

Toyota would do well to bring out the Tundra to Aust with a 5 or 6 litre diesel....and watch the sales rip.

Why? Farmers are looking for any way to reduce their costs, reducing fuel use would be a saving.

Really? When your machinery uses 1000ltrs per 24 hrs of use, and your running 6-7 days a week round the clock, do you really think the 100 litres you use in your car a week or fortnight makes any difference.

Stop thinking like a city dweller...most highway trucks carry 1500-2000 litres, even they burn at 40-50 litres an hour or 100km...which is the same as a full tank in your VW Golf.

Get real.  Millions of people jump into ICE powered vehicles every day with zero issues. Millions.

If you think the EVs are gonna be fault free think again. You are beyond stupid.

Over priced toys for overpaid virtue signalling fools.

With respect I've forgotten more about running sheep than you know.Vast majority of farmers have moved away from sheep.  65million head today versus 170 million in the 1990's (my early days), 180 million in the 1960's (my fathers days), we are now equivalent to the 1880's with current figures.

Pissy little fuel savings are meaningless when you can't even afford to buy a new Hilux , which is evactly where today's sheep grazier is placed.

A glass that shatters is a "sort of glass". ::)

EDIT: BTW - You know passenger cars have safety glass as standard?

So you wouldn't test something which you said you wanted, to confirm it met your standards. of course your's are pretty low. ;)

So tell us all what you know about NDT (Non Destruct Testing). ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Cost of generating solar power ranges from $36 to $44 per megawatt hour (MWh), the WNISR said, while onshore wind power comes in at $29–$56 per MWh. Nuclear energy costs between $112 and $189.

Wind turbines in Kosciusko would be the ideal but a problem for tourism.  Pumped storage in the Snowy dams gives permanent usage and the remoteness adds to nuclear safety.

Dynamic armour or electric armour is a type of armour proposed for the protection of ships and armoured fighting vehicles from shaped charge weapons. Dynamic armour uses a strong electric field to disrupt the jet of ionized gas produced by a warhead.

A vehicle is fitted with two thin shells, separated by insulating material. The outer shell holds an enormous electric charge, while the inner shell is at ground. If an incoming HEAT jet needle of a conductive metal, like copper, penetrates both shells, it forms a bridge between them, and the electrical energy discharges rapidly through the jet, disrupting it. Trials have so far been promising, and it is hoped that improved systems could protect against kinetic energy penetrators.

Drunk drivers cars' will melt on impact and the driver will be shocked. Tank drivers also get their kicks.

Ah. i see aid the blind man who was lying because he couldn't see at all.

So Musk, having presumably requested armourplate glass (which is what I would have thought was sensible as his marketing ploy), should not have tested it with a steel ball lobbed at the window. Instead he should have sold the ute as is marketed as armourplate glass, and have his a*se sued off when it was shown it wasn't by an irate customer or significant other; should the customer be the victim. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

When you factor in all the components in an ICE vehicle that require maintenance, the engine only makes a proportion of what needs to be maintained. While buying an EV saves you on engine maintenance, you still need to maintain and/or replace tyres, brakes, suspension components, standard auto electrics, etc. Plus, the main components in an EV are often liquid anyway to reduce their size. If the cooling system fails for those components they will burn out fairly quickly and need to be replaced.

you're an idiot .. if the glass fails Musk doesn't get sued, he replaces it under consumer protection laws. Likewise, musk is protected by those same laws and his supplier supplies musk with glass that meets the specified standard. It's up to the supplier to make sure his glass meets the standard it was supposed to meet, not musk.

As the manufacturer of the vehicle he is in the gun first and foremost. He can then sue the glass manufacturer to recover his costs.

"Sometimes an action may be taken against the manufacturer instead of, or as well as against the supplier. For example, the contract might not give the injured person the necessary legal rights or the manufacturer may be better able to meet large claims because it is adequately insured. There are statutory rights against manufacturers under the Australian Consumer Law, which is contained in schedule 2 of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth).

Manufacturers are usually sued for breach of the guarantees contained in the Australian Consumer Law [see in particular schedule 2, ss 54-56], for breach of other provisions of the Australian Consumer Law [see in particular shcedule 2, ss 106 and 138] or for negligence at common law.

The extent to which negligence, or carelessness, must be proved varies from case to case. It commonly involves satisfying the court that it was more probable than not that the plaintiff's injury was caused by the negligence of the manufacturer"

If Musk sells his product as having a certain standard of fit, he is in breach.
