Title: GIVING LIFE TO OLD ROUTERS
Post by Vic on Jan 17th, 2020 at 9:32am
Prior to moving into our new house, I had ethernet cabling run through the place for the internet connected devices I had at the time (Smart TV etc) and built in a small amount of redundancy.   Unfortunately, after buying a new soundbar and installing Foxtel, I found myself needing more internet connections at one particular point and the cost of running additional cabling was prohibitive.    I could have run the Soundbar and Foxtel IQ4 off wireless, but due to where the NBN comes into the house, and the amount of insulation, I kept experiencing dropouts.

I found a CISCO Linksys EA2700 modem router in the shed that I used with my previous FTTN connection and decided to convert it to a switch that could run my appliances and give me additional redundancy..

This site. https://dd-wrt.com. provides a linux based firmware replacement for your devices and converts them from a router to a switch thus reusing older devices and saving a few bucks.   It allows you to fully disable the wireless function and also open up the internet in port (usually red in colour ) and use that as a ethernet port, in my case giving me 4 fully usable ports.    Took a few hours, but worth it if you like to tinker and reuse devices
