funny thing Vic   I do not recall a visit from the PM during the fires in 2003 in ACT we lost 500 homes and 4 lives....I do not recall anyone blaming the PM either..

You need to learn the difference between back burning and fuel reduction burning. You probably meant fuel reduction burning here.

Back burning is lightiing a smaller, more controlled fire in the path of a larger fire to deprive the larger fire of fuel.

Fuel reduction burning is lighting small fires at a safe time of the year to remove fuel.

The NSW government that cut tens of millions of dollars out of the fire services budgets last year? The Federal government with no climate change policy and hoarding money for a Budget surplus like human dragons? Both governments warned about fire danger nearly a year ago?

Yes - it's a bit unfair - I suppose these politicians need to show their face and take a photo op - have to show they are 'leading' and 'caring' ... and the media do love such a story.  Doesn't help anyone.  Federal, State and local governments need to work out where things went wrong and get on to it..  all this deep bush living with unburnt undergrowth.

It astounds me - we moved up from the Bega Valley, partly to get away from burn-off smoke - the burn-offs were always in the deep forest far from homes etc and also from pine plantations in the Snowies etc - no use at all when the deadfall etc builds up next door.  We know all those towns to date.

Unprovable claims that the Kooris would have handled it better are not worth the time to consider - you can't prove a non-event, and making mileage out of pain and disaster is frankly disgusting.  Cobargo to the West was open paddocks etc, North, East and South were forested and paddocks mixed.  Takes one hell of a windstorm - still raged through.  Bought some pipe and such from a bloke West of Cobargo a few years back, and said then that they had no chance of getting out on a dirt track if a big fire blew up.

Now the galaxial cost of rebuilding... my home is becoming a depot for materials for emergency re-constructions here...  8-) .. been helping out for months now..... no pay - it costs.

There is a reason people are pissed off with our PM and the Coalition....Scummo acts like everything is under control and there is no need to panic whilst half the nation burns....His Government has resisted taking action until the criticism reaches a point where the PM can no longer stay silent hiding away on holidays....Scummo then visits affected communities and walks away from any confrontation because he has no answer to these peoples concerns....The Coalition want Australian's to believe they have everything under control and there is no need to panic whilst quite Australian's watch their lives go up in smoke....Looks like these quite Australian's are finding their voice and Scummo runs away!!!

Not leave the country in secret to go on holiday.
Not hold a private New Year's Eve party at Kirribilli House while the country burns.
Acknowledge the reality of climate change and have a climate change policy.

Didn't the fire chiefs try to convene a meeting with scumo about the prospects of a horror fire season and scumo was missing in action every time ?? They needed more equipment but scumos short arms couldn't reach the bottom of his long pockets :(

People are angry, some are bereft, others, if not frightened, are deeply anxious as another horror day looms. It is understandable that blame is being heaved all over the place.

Much of it is misplaced but there is at least one figure at state government level in New South Wales who should expect to pay a heavy price not for the fires but for an abject failure to meet any reasonable standards of public service in the face of them.

NSW Emergency Services Minister David Elliott flew out of the state when it was burning. He remained absent during the devastation in the state’s south coast on Wednesday. If reports are accurate, he will return to Sydney today, having cut his holiday short.

That he opted to jet off on a European holiday is an astonishing abrogation of his duties at a critical time for the state. If an Emergency Services Minister absents himself during a time of emergency, there seems little point in having one.

It has been reported Premier Berejiklian urged all her ministers to remain if not in Sydney than at least within the state over the holiday period. Obviously not everyone was listening. Her deputy, National Party leader, John Barilaro flew off to the Old Dart.

Before we start the tedious what-aboutery, there are no parallels with the Prime Minister, state premiers in Queensland or Victoria or the Deputy Premier in New South Wales taking their holidays. As Police and Emergency Services Minister, Elliott is an intrinsic part of the command structure and performs a specific liaison between government and emergency service operations. He is also responsible for overseeing resource allocation and relevant spending and budgeting issues as they arise in times of emergency.

For Elliott, there cannot be any coming back from it politically. How can he now he seamlessly appear up the back doing noddies while the RFS Commissioner provides a televised briefing to the people of New South Wales? How can he now in good faith be part of central command going forward? How can he now tour places like Batemans Bay or Cobargo or Bermagui or Lake Conjola and console people who have lost everything? What’s he going to do, hand out souvenirs from Paris?
