School attacks 'could be prevented' says US Secret Service

Washington: Many attacks at public schools in the United States could be prevented by identifying students of concern, the US Secret Service says.

The service has released a report that found attackers routinely show troubling behaviour that should be reported.

The study, which focused not only on mass shootings but other acts of targeted violence such as knifings, bolstered previous research on the warning signs students often exhibit before committing deadly violence at their school.

The Secret Service, which is primarily tasked with protecting the US president and other elected officials, has analysed school violence since the 1999 mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado.

Its latest report on Thursday focused on the decade between 2008 and 2017.

The report did not include the deadliest shooting at a high school in US history, the killing of 17 people at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, by a lone gunman last year.

The agency found that, in 41 incidents of targeted school violence at schools serving children in kindergarten through to Year 12, all the attackers experienced some form of social stress in their relationship with peers or a romantic partner and nearly all had a negative experience in their home life.

Most attackers had multiple motives, the report found, and the most common one involved a grievance with a classmate.

For 83 per cent of attackers, that was at least part of their motivation and for 61 per cent of them it appeared to be the primary driver.

The Secret Service routinely uses a "threat assessment model" to identify people with a threatening interest in the American president.

The agency has recommended schools adopt a similar approach to prevent mass violence.

Many public schools and colleges, in the years since the Columbine shooting and a lone gunman's killing of 32 people at Virginia Tech in 2007, have used so-called behavioural intervention teams to identify troubled students.

In the 41 attacks studied by the Secret Service, which all involved a student or former student as the perpetrator, the suspect used a firearm in 61 per cent of the incidents, with bladed weapons used the rest of the time.

The troubling behaviours attackers exhibited included communicating a threat to their primary target or saying they wanted to commit violence, such as by making a video message.

In many cases, someone observed this behaviour but did not report it to authorities, the report found.

There have been 84 incidents of gunfire on school grounds so far this year.

There have been 366 mass shootings.

34,000 people have been killed by guns in the US so far this year.

More than 3,000 children have been injured or killed by guns this year.

Sounds like the US needs more guns.

Bobby.........that was the estimate over 10 years ago.......America is now estimated to be approaching 400,000,000 Firearms, & as long as the US Government can only "Estimate" how many firearms American Civilians own, America will continue to be the Land of the Free defined for the People by our Founding Fathers in 1776....Yes...Home of the Free, Because of the Brave!

And the only thing to stop a bad teacher with a gun is a good student with a gun.

So, the obvious answer is give every teacher and every student a gun.

And the janitors will need guns too, in case there's a bad teacher AND a bad student.

American Teachers who Volunteer
to be Trained & Armed to Protect their Students

Again, nowhere in America are any Teachers being forced to train & carry Firearms while they are at school......listen carefully to the first 10 seconds of this video.

The Woman at 2:20 of this video would never be a candidate for school firearms training. She doesn't want to carry a firearm, & would never be forced to carry a firearm at school. She obviously would not be a volunteer.

The KEY WORD is Volunteer......these teachers volunteer to be trained in the use of firearms, & if they successfully qualify in their stringent school firearm training course, then & only then, will they be considered for a permit to carry firearms in the school, to be used to defend their students against potential active shooter(s).

The Citizens in Over 30 of the 50 US States presently Permit Teachers in Their States to Carry Firearms in Their Schools to Protect Their Students.

Source:      Guns & America
Quote:
Teachers or other school staff in districts in 31 states can legally carry weapons in schools, according to a review of state laws and local news coverage by Guns & America.

In 5 states — Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Texas and South Dakota — teachers or other school staff are explicitly authorized by state law to carry firearms in schools, according to a report by the Education Commission of the States.

Another 26 states leave approval, policies and training requirements up to local school districts, or allow teachers with concealed weapons permits to carry firearms in schools. That means districts can legally allow armed teachers.........continued

31 States so far, & legislation is pending or being reintroduced in most of the remaining States.

The American People do not need, nor want, your approval in how to protect their Children. They will go about doing it their way irregardless of what you think, or how you feel about the matter of defending & protecting their children......

Well, to be fair, they do think there's a gun problem: they think there's not enough of them.

They want every school kid, checkout chick, crosswalk attendant, burger flipper, and teacher to be carrying a gun "just in case".

The far right had an almost absolute monopoly on lethal terrorism in the United States last year.

"On Wednesday, the Anti-Defamation League released a report finding that attackers with ties to right-wing extremist movements killed at least 50 people in 2018.

"That was close to the total number of Americans killed by domestic extremists, meaning that the far right had an almost absolute monopoly on lethal terrorism in the United States last year."

How dare I blame Islam for everything?

The fact is that firearms are impossible
to eradicate as when oiled they will last
for well over 100 years.

America is stuck with 320 million firearms
and psycho killers on every street corner.

Bobby.........that was the estimate over 10 years ago.......America is now estimated to be approaching 400,000,000 Firearms, & as long as the US Government can only "Estimate" how many firearms American Civilians own, America will continue to be the Land of the Free defined for the People by our Founding Fathers in 1776....Yes...Home of the Free, Because of the Brave!

..

Americans have a sick and perverted gun culture.

Correct.

He doesn't appear to be a white supremacist, and I never even hinted at him being one.

I merely said that white supremacists are responsible for 9 out of 10 shootings/terrorist attacks.

This stat reduces dramatically once you remove fed agents inserted into operating PAT CON.

Authorities have not named the suspect but say he is a 16-year-old student at the school. He carried out the attack on his birthday.

video footage from the high school that showed the suspect taking a handgun from his backpack and shooting five other people before shooting himself in the head.

The answer is to find the cause.

Why did this kid do it?

Can anyone guarantee that he would not have found some other way (knife, poison, vehicle etc.) to kill people, if guns were harder to access?

Of course no one can guarantee that he could not have done so.

There is a lot more to the answer than shouting gun control.

Guns alone are not the cause of the problem cods.

Obviously the mental state of this kid had a significant impact on his actions.

Common sense gun ownership should be in place, that's a given.

But I feel that it is not the 100% answer to this.

There are other factors which have be addressed to find the answers to this problem.

Why would anyone want to kill someone?

That's the real issue here.

10 American Killers Linked To Prescription Drugs

Aaron Ybarra: Prozac and Risperdal. June 5, 2014: 26-year old Ybarra, opened fire with a shotgun at Seattle Pacific University, killing one student and wounding two others. Ybarra reported that he had been prescribed the antidepressant Prozac and antipsychotic Risperdal.

Elliot Rodger: Xanax. May 23, 2014: 22-year-old Rodger went on a rampage in Isla Vista, California, killing 7 people and injuring 13 more, before killing himself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Elliot had been taking Xanax for a while, according to his parents. There were fears he might have been addicted to it, or taking more than was prescribed.

Jose Reyes: Fluoxetine (generic Prozac.) October 21, 2013: 12-year-old Reyes opened fire at Sparks Middle School, killing a teacher and wounding two classmates before committing suicide. The investigation revealed that he had been seeing a psychiatrist and had a generic version of Prozac (fluoxetine) in his system at the time of death.

Adam Lanza: Lexapro. December 14, 2012: 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. Prior to driving to the school, Lanza shot and killed his mother at their Newtown home. As first responders arrived at the scene, Lanza shot himself in the head. Kathleen Koenig, a nurse specialist in psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center, the last place Lanza was treated, had notes of Lanza’s behavior while on Lexipro. Nancy reported, “on the third morning he complained of dizziness. By that afternoon he was disoriented, his speech was disjointed, he couldn’t even figure out how to open his cereal box. He was sweating profusely…it was actually dripping off his hands. He said he couldn’t think…He was practically vegetative.” Adam stopped taking Lexapro and never took psychotropics again, which worried Koenig.

James Holmes: Clonazepam, Sertraline (generic Zoloft.) July 20, 2012: 25-year-old James Eagan Holmes set off several gas or smoke canisters and then opened fire while inside a Century movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 and wounding 70. During their execution of the search warrant on Holmes' apartment, police, “found prescription medication for sertraline, a generic version of Zoloft used to treat depression, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder; and Clonazepam, usually prescribed to treat anxiety and panic attacks,” reports the L.A. Times.

Steven Kazmierczak: Prozac, Xanax, Ambien. February 14, 2008: 27-year-old Kazmierczak shot and killed 5 people and wounded 21 others before killing himself in a Northern Illinois University auditorium. According to his girlfriend, he had recently been taking Prozac, Xanax and Ambien.

Jeff Weise: Prozac. March 21, 2005: 16-year-old Jeff Weise, shot and killed his grandparents, then went to his school on the Red Lake Indian Reservation where he shot and killed 5 students, 1 security guard, 1 teacher, and wounded 7 before killing himself. Prozac was found in his system.

Eric Harris: Luvox. April 20, 1999: 18-year-old Eric Harris and his accomplice, Dylan Klebold, killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves in Columbine, Colorado. Harris was on the antidepressant Luvox, while Klebold’s medical records remain sealed.

Kipland Kinkel: Prozac. May 21, 1998: 15-year-old Kip Kinkel murdered his parents and then proceeded to school where he opened fire on students in the cafeteria, killing two and wounding 25. Kinkel had been taking the antidepressant Prozac. Kinkel had been attending “anger control classes” and was under the care of a psychologist.

Barry Dale Loukaitis: Ritalin. February 2, 1996: 14-year-old Barry Dale Loukatis, shot and killed his algebra teacher and two students, and held his Frontier Middle School classmates hostage before a gym coach subdued Loukaitis. Loukaitis suffered from hyperactivity, and was taking Ritalin at the time of the shooting. He also suffered from clinical depression, a mental illness present in the last three generations of the Loukaitis family.

Perhaps its both! The drugs fuel the insanity!

Big Pharma wants the attention to be focused on gun ownership rather than the sales of their drugs. Any such discussion may result in legislation that would affect their profits. Furthermore an inquiry may widen into the fact that more than 100,000 Americans die per year from prescription drugs - a figure that dwarfs mass shootings.

I support true competition in the markets. A 10,000% markup in existential drugs is made possible by a corrupt FDA. Pure exploitation!

You watch TV AiA? Every second add is for a drug many for diseases never heard of before. The cost of medical is way over priced and we have a President who is addressing this and level medical costs in line with other services.

I am a Capitalist but the Free Market will not work and does not work for health care for a simple reason: there is no money to be made on insuring the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, cockdealer.

To continue your binary juvenile logic or lack there of......why do you think licensing firearms owners will have any impact on deaths or injuries based on the fact that licensing drivers has little or no impact on the already illegal, immoral and unconscionable actions commonly demonstrated.

You need to be outed as the wanna be commo authoritarian that you are. You don't care about victims, you are incapable of caring as you are a typical leftard. You only desire power which must come as a result of removing other people's freedoms and in this case, Constitutional Rights.

Without a gun, that can't happen.

Indeed.

Should it be as hard to get a gun in America as it is a driver's license? I would think that would be a sensible bar for gun ownership.

Why does the USA need 400 million guns in private hands?

NEED?? That's an Australian/Pommy requirement.....Americans have no requirement to show 'need'....never have....never will....We have an Individual Right to Keep & Bear Arms.......

Americans collect guns like people collect cars....stamps....coins....etc.

We see them....we like them.....we buy them....we mount them on our walls, we showcase them.....When the boys come over we share them.....go outside to the back-yard shootin' range for a shoot.....

Americans take pleasure in their guns.....& if the time ever comes, if the criminals get out of hand.....or the government gets out of hand.....they are there to defend all we possess....our family, our homes....our property.....our Freedom & our Liberty.......Our Rights.

To an American there is no limit to how many guns one can own, or how much ammunition one can stockpile......more is always better.

But NEED never has any meaning in an Americans decision making when it comes to firearms.

The Second Amendment is but the Second Right of Ten Rights, but the most important Right....it's meant to protect the other Rights.......not Needs.......placed second only to Freedom of Religion, the Freedom of Speech, & the Right to Assemble....placed second purposefully because the Second Amendment's Individual Right to Keep & Bear Arms is meant to protect all the other Rights in the Bill of Rights (first 10 Amendments to the US Constitution)......Not the Bill of 'Needs'.  ;)

All 50 States & the District of Columbia (Washington D.C.) allow the concealed carry of firearms.

33 States require permits

16 States have Constitutional Carry Laws (no permit required to carry a firearm) but will also issue permits upon request. Legislation is pending for Constitutional Carry in many of the other States.

Vermont will not issue a permit. The US Constitution covers their Right to Carry.....their Right to Keep & Bear Arms.

Actually, you ask a really interesting question,  Why the hell do we need Drivers Licences?

Underage drivers get busted all the time.  Poor drivers kill people all the time.  Banned drivers still drive.  Re offenders continually re offend.  Licensed drivers hire trucks and fill them up with ANFO and park them next to OKC Murrah. Licences drivers still steal trucks and drive them thru crowded shopping precincts killing sprees.

That's a short list....so dumbass, ya want more?????

So you think the roads would be safer with ONLY unlicensed drivers, right? What about speed limits? Or what about all the traffic rules? Why do we need them? Do you see how juvenile your logic is?

To continue your binary juvenile logic or lack there of......why do you think licensing firearms owners will have any impact on deaths or injuries based on the fact that licensing drivers has little or no impact on the already illegal, immoral and unconscionable actions commonly demonstrated.

You need to be outed as the wanna be commo authoritarian that you are. You don't care about victims, you are incapable of caring as you are a typical leftard. You only desire power which must come as a result of removing other people's freedoms and in this case, Constitutional Rights.

Tic Tok. Lock n load. Power to the people.

There are decades of research regarding safety and driving behaviour to reduce vehicle crashes. Decades. Which is why the licensing of drivers in the USA is a dynamic, and not static, process.

muzzies are a classic case of self indoctrination of death cult ideology.

muhammad used ideology to spur on jihadists to create the ultimate caliphate.

You know worldly riches, sex slaves and muslim supremacy, for the jihadists, enhanced by the added promise that if said jihadists died in the slaughter of others he was automatically granted entry into paradise, which turns out to be a brothel in the sky, filled with hour'is with big tits and little boys.

The ideology still stands today as the supreme, unchangeable, infallible words of the reinvented moon god allah.

muzzies kill for ideological reasons.

I doubt that this kid was indoctrinated by some such ideology, he obviously had problems, I believe that the answer in this case is far removed from gun control, there are many other things a killer can use if a gun is not available.

As far as I can see the cries for gun control have a *political power* motivation to them.

The gun control crowd see it as tactic to use against the right wing.

I doubt they give a proverbial rats askyourmotherforsixpence about the dead and wounded.

Quote:
The next time you hear a politician call for “common sense gun control,” listen for the details.

You are likely to be treated to a torrent of platitudes about assault weapons, gun show sales and other half-measures.

These sorts of proposals are rooted in a theory of gun control that has been around since the 1960s. The basic idea is that fewer guns equal less gun crime.

But for this theory to have even a chance of working, drastic reductions in the supply of guns will be necessary. Everything else amounts to security theater.

The late Senator Howard Metzenbaum, a strong gun control advocate, explained it this way: “If you don’t ban all guns you might as well ban none of them.”

But few, if any, politicians who call for “common sense gun control” have the courage to propose this.

Even putting aside the issue of the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which affirms the right to keep and bear arms, a gun ban has no broad popular support. Never mind the conservative states, handgun ban referendums failed in two of our most liberal states - Massachusetts in 1976 and California in 1982 – by large margins. No serious attempts have been made since then.

Recently Australia’s gun control efforts have gained new prominence as a possible model for the United States to follow.

Let’s take a closer look at Australia.

In 1996, after a lunatic used a semiautomatic rifle to murder 34 people in Tasmania, the Australian government banned all semi-automatic rifles and repeating shotguns.

Owners of roughly 700,000 registered firearms – about a quarter of the country’s three million total guns – were required to turn them in for destruction. The government called this a “buyback,” but in fact no one had a choice.

As my research shows, this model will not work in the United States for the simple reason that the US has roughly 325 393 million guns (2017). This is orders of magnitude more than any other country. Even if the Australian plan were tried in the US and worked to perfection, we’d still be left with over 200 million guns, including handguns which account for nearly 80 percent of gun crime.

But gun confiscation has never worked to perfection, and sometimes threatens to make the problem worse.

The 2007 International Small Arms Survey studied 72 countries that attempted to enforce gun confiscation or registration on their citizens. They found massive defiance of these laws, with only about a third of owners complying.

If Americans defy gun bans at just the average rate that has occurred internationally, then we should expect tens of millions of guns to flood into the black market.

Not surprisingly, politicians advocating for gun control prefer to avoid the thorny issues that confiscation raises. Instead, they seek to have it both ways.

They pursue the votes of gun owners by paying lip service to the Second Amendment and offering assurances that they only want to ban “the bad guns” like rifles with pistol grips.

And at the same time, they pander to their core constituents with broad gun ban rhetoric, and supply control proposals that will have a marginal effect at best. And when these meager efforts fail to pass or to work? Blame the gun lobby.

So, to the glib critics of America’s gun culture, we should make this demand: If supply controls are the answer, describe precisely the full program of supply-side policies you propose to stop the gun crimes that we all abhor. And then tell us how those policies will also allow lawful gun owners to keep and protect themselves with firearms.

If you cannot square these two things, then you must convince Americans that they are better off under policies that would disarm good people, in a fruitless attempt to keep bad men from getting guns.

"If supply controls are the answer, describe precisely the full program of supply-side policies you propose to stop the gun crimes that we all abhor. And then tell us how those policies will also allow lawful gun owners to keep and protect themselves with firearms."

Soy Boy

Slang used to describe males who completely and utterly lack all necessary masculine qualities. This pathetic state is usually achieved by an over-indulgence of emasculating products and/or ideologies.

The origin of the term derives from the negative effects soy consumption has been proven to have on the male physique and libido.

The average soy boy is a feminist, nonathletic, has never been in a fight, will probably marry the first girl that has sex with him, and likely reduces all his arguments to labeling the opposition as "Nazis".
