Next week's Arctic blast will be so cold, forecasters expect it to break 170 records across US

This week's cold snap is only an appetizer compared with the main Arctic blast that's coming next week, meteorologists said. That freeze could be one for the record books.

"The National Weather Service is forecasting 170 potential daily record cold high temperatures Monday to Wednesday,” tweeted Weather Channel meteorologist Jonathan Erdman. "A little taste of January in November."

The temperature nosedive will be a three-day process as a cold front charges across the central and eastern U.S. from Sunday into Tuesday.

The front will plunge quickly through the northern Plains and upper Midwest Sunday, into the southern Plains and Ohio Valley Monday, then through most of the East Coast and Deep South by Tuesday, the Weather Channel said.

Record-breaking, teeth-rattling temperatures are on tap for next week as an Arctic blast sweeps across much of the country, according to forecasts.

“The National Weather Service is forecasting 170 potential daily record cold high temperatures Monday to Wednesday,” Weather Channel meteorologist Jonathan Erdman said in a tweet. “A little taste of January in November.”

For much of the country east of the Rockies, the cold wave could mean temperatures of up to 30 degrees below average, according to CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward.

“We are in a pattern where multiple waves of cold are moving in from Canada and impacting the Central and Eastern US,” he said.

“One wave of cold came in late last week, another is moving in today and tomorrow, and the coldest blast by far moves in early next week.”

The cold front will plunge rapidly through the northern Plains and upper Midwest on Sunday, into the southern Plains and Ohio Valley on Monday and then through most of the East Coast by Tuesday, according to the Weather Channel.

Meanwhile, a storm system that moved through the Northeast late Thursday brought the first taste of winter to parts of the region.

“As of early Friday morning, snowfall reports between 1 and 3 inches were common from northwestern Pennsylvania into southern New England,” AccuWeather meteorologist Maura Kelly said.

“The main story on Friday will be the bitter cold extending from the southern Plains to the East,” she added.

“Then late this weekend the next storm system will begin to take shape across the Plains, which will bring the next round of snow and ice to the Plains and into the Northeast into the beginning of next week.”

By Wednesday, the high temperature is expected to be 36 degrees, but it will feel much colder with the wind-chill factor. The low is forecast to be 28 degrees, according to AccuWeather.

We might be only three (and a bit) weeks away from summer, but snow is falling.

After some days in the mid-30s last week, the temperature has taken a turn for a winter flashback.

Showers produced extensive hail and are expected to continue tonight along with cold and gusty winds.

Fresh snow has already landed at Mt Hotham and will continue to fall into the weekend.

“Snowfalls began early this morning as temperatures dipped below zero. Snowfalls, intense at times, blanketed the resort for the third snow event this month,” a Mt Hotham spokesman said.

The Bureau of Meteorology says snow could fall as low as 700m.

At Mt Buller, more than 200 racers are tackling the Targa High Country around Mansfield, Euroa, Eildon and King Valley as snow falls.
