The Tasmanian Local Government Association has confirmed plastics which were previously sent to Victoria for processing are now being stockpiled.

It comes after recycling company SKM was declared insolvent earlier this month, and an announcement by the Commonwealth that it plans to phase in a ban on the export of recyclable waste overseas.

Several large municipalities, including the Hobart City Council, are among the Tasmanian councils which send recyclables to SKM’s Derwent Park facility in Hobart."

I guess there is no money in recycling plastic.

Of course they could always use it as feedstock for generators etc.

Plastic is cheap. A very low cost commodity when new.

Once used it is called rubbish.

Rubbish is valueless. That's why we call it rubbish.

Recycling is cost and labour heavy.

Other than high value items, gold, silver, their is no cost effective solution.

Our taxes are being blown on this fairy dust non solution of a Green wet dream.

Burning rubbish as a fuel ....rubbish is a low density fuel....compare a tonne of beautiful coal to a tonne of rubbish, which one will produce the heat to boil the water to make the steam to turn the turbines do ya think.

The answer is simple our government has to grow some balls and develop a re-cycling plant for Australia.

I'm sure it would make a handsome profit that can then be used for schools roads..................!!

But once something makes a profit it will be privatized so they can do that too.

The only profit in recycling is generated via certificates....tax payer funded incentives, which are scammed on a wholesale basis.

Their is no money in rubbish.  That is why it is called rubbish.

Incinerate or landfill.  Or fairy dust.

As usual you are wrong Rider. For lots of reasons.
- burning plastic creates pollution such as dioxins and heavy metals.
- burning plastic is actually a very expensive way of disposing of it and an inefficient energy source.
- burning plastic will release more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

So all in all quite a brain-dead suggestion
