Title: Solid State Drives
Post by Marla on Aug 4th, 2019 at 9:57am

I'm completely sold on them. No more of that soul-sucking pussy platter drives. These are fast, reliable and getting cheaper by the day

And they are getting cheap -because they are made cheap but I'm more than happy with this.

OS to SSD, data to HDD

Hope this guy is on some kind of a police watch list.

Gordy, ignore the poor sad rejected insignificant sole.  The poor disabled creature is just trying to get attention like a lost puppy.

What capacity are these drives available in now ?

When I bought 3 a while ago they were only about 230Gb.

They are good for the main system disk as they are quick.

For data the ordinary much higher capacity disks are quite OK but they do fail sometimes.

When it comes to any HDD, 1 = 0 and 2 = 1, so if you value your data, you need multiple backups.

My next system will have x3 internal drives.

SDD for the OS
SDD for critical programs
HDD for data

All data is then backed up to multiple ex-HDD.

The poor sole is probably inadequate.

Definitely a backup is essential as disks do definitely fail sometimes.

You can get external backup disks which can also fail. So a 2nd backup disk is even more secure.

If you have a 2nd PC then saving on the other PC is quite effective.

A Windows backup is a good idea as well as a Windows boot disk if the PC itself fails or the Windows gets corrupted..

Ah Mr Smith you are of course quite correct.

But you miss the subtlety at work. Then subtlety is usually lost on down to earth Lefties.

I quite deliberately used sole as it seemed an appropriate description of the baseness of the pour sole involved who after all is just some pour inadequate inferior sole trying to get attention like a neglected child.

Windows 10 also allows backing up to the cloud with OneDrive but the capacity is not unlimited. This is a built in feature of Windows 10.

Just how secure is the cloud ? I don't know.

quite good article on Windows 10 backup options.

another complete backup is

I've been thinking about paying for a cloud service. I bought a WD 'My Cloud Home" and they are absolute garbage. Everything about this NAS drive sucks: the interface, the sloppy speeds on which it uploads, the lack of security, even the app.

There is only so much you can do at home.

A NAS is a good start, but won't help if your house is burnt to the ground :(

All depends on your budget.

But OS on SSD is definitely the way to go.

Gweggy is returning to his abnormal self and getting smutty with his OFF TOPIC SPAM.

Sadly Kangyroo shows why NOBODY would ever listen to ANYTHING a Greeny says.

Title: Re: Solid State Drives
Post by juliar on Aug 5th, 2019 at 9:11am
If it is a USB connexion then it will be very slow.  And then how long before it develops a fault ?

The cloud is an excellent total backup for data. The Windows 10 OneDrive will work for a small backup. Otherwise you have to pay. But what happens if you miss a payment and your PC goes down ?

The C drive system stuff can be backed up with a Windows 10 system image on a second disk drive.

Annoying system errors can be fixed with a RESTORE to return to an earlier image. So do frequent SAVES.

Title: Re: Solid State Drives
Post by Zen Kangaroo on Aug 5th, 2019 at 9:14am
If that's the sort of backups you need, you're better off using a 3rd party app that has much better image support and rescue options.

But that can get a little much for home users.  You're certainly on the right track.

Please stop posting about me, I don't want anything to do with you. You're just going to ruin another thread with your toxic posts.

Picked up a fantastic 250 GB SSD external hard drive. Literally is the size of 3 credit cards glued together.

Title: Re: Solid State Drives
Post by juliar on Aug 5th, 2019 at 1:30pm
BH what happens when the glue gives away ?

Does it connect with USB ?

USB connexion is desperately slow and can give transmission errors in a long data transfer.

actually 250GB is very small these days.

These SSD are best for the C drive system disk as they are quick.

I have had conventional disk drives give up the ghost but my 3 SSDs are still going OK. Less to go wrong I suppose.

Size is the main req for backup and so ordinary disks are usually used.

But the Windows 10 OneDrive on the cloud is free and fast but there is a size limit of 5Gb.

OneDrive is a consumer service tied to a Microsoft account. It includes a free tier that offers 5GB of file storage. You can upgrade the available storage to 50GB for $2 a month, but the best deal is an Office 365 Home or Personal subscription, which includes 1000GB (1TB) of storage for up to five users.Aug 15, 2018

Windows 10 file copy speeds are crap, the problem may not be the nas.

SSD is fast.

Some disadvantages are:

SSD has a predetermined amount of read write actions before they stop working.

Where a platter disk will very likely show signs of a failure giving time to recover data a SSD typically just stops.

i.e there is no recovery option on day "X" it is just all gone.

Title: Re: Solid State Drives
Post by juliar on Aug 5th, 2019 at 9:08pm
Slow speed can be due to a slow motherboard and/or CPU and/or not enough memory.

Also an old spec USB.  Even an inadequate power supply that doesn't like the extra load of the external disk.

And is the Windows 10 fully updated ? Do you have a decent virus and spyware checker ? NOT McAfee or Norton.

Has the disk that comes with the motherboard been loaded ?

To protect for SSD failure do regular Windows 10 image on another disk and create a Windows 10 boot disk.
