Title: The seven-word name of Sydney's new airport
Post by Bam on Mar 4th, 2019 at 3:31pm
Here it is: Western Sydney International Nancy-Bird Walton Airport. While the choice to name the airport after this Aviation pioneer is commendable, the name itself is too long.

How long before it get shortened to Walton Airport?

"Walton" was her husband's sir name, so to shorten it, it would have to be "Nancy Bird" International Airport

Almost every woman's name is her father's  or husband's. Patriarchy   :D

Nancy Bird sounds like a piss-take name for a Sydney airport. Perpetual Mardi Gras.
And people would take Bird to be her surname.

It is her surname, her maiden name

But I wasn't suggesting the airport should be just Nancy Bird Airport, only that if her long name was shortened to just "Walton", that would be the wrong name, that's her husbands surname, and the airport is not being named after Charles Walton

There'd be a hundred names we could think of but if they insist on Nancy's name then I think there'd be nothing wrong using "Walton" but with "Nancy" in front of it. So then, Nancy Walton International Airport would be OK by me

The bludgers could have surveyed the NSW public with a list of names to choose from, but they have their quotas of women in everything these days, so it sounds like a lefty progressive political choice to me

Western Sydney International Airport might have sufficed
