Title: Shell buys German solar battery maker sonnen
Post by Sir lastnail on Feb 16th, 2019 at 11:10am
Looks like the only people left who are not investing in Renewable Energy is the LNP. :D LOL

Quote:
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to buy German residential solar battery maker sonnen, as the oil and gas major expands its electricity business in its bid for a bigger role in the global transition to low-carbon energy.

Sonnen, which has 40,000 battery systems worldwide and in 2017 had sales of 65 million euros ($73 million), is the German market leader in home storage batteries and has expanded into electric vehicle charging systems.

Regulatory approval and completion of the transaction, involving Shell New Energies, was expected in the first quarter of 2019, a sonnen spokesman said, without giving a value.

Sonnen would continue to operate from the Bavarian town of Wildpoldsried and its top management would stay on, he said.

Germany has 1.5 million solar systems whose subsidized sales tariffs are due to be phased out in coming years. By acquiring batteries, householders can store home-produced power and use it for themselves or sell it to the grid.

Shell, the world’s second largest listed oil and gas producer, has accelerated investment in renewable energy and power markets, betting on a rapid rise in electricity demand due to electric vehicle use and a switch to cleaner energy sources.

It has acquired vehicle charging technologies, solar power producers and retail energy supplier First Utility. Shell injected cash into sonnen last year to help it grow.

Sonnen’s existing investors, including GE Ventures and European private equity investors, will be bought out.

Batteries are now renewables? Or merely just a crutch for renewables?

Or did you mean the rest of the piece?

You thought Shell wouldn't be into anything but oil? Anything that might make them money?

Did you see? "Shell, the world’s second largest listed oil and gas producer" and nothing about getting out of oil and gas.

Next you will be blaming battery prices not falling on the evil fossil fuel companies. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Shell can see a future in renewable energy and electric cars but the LNP spends all of its time trying to convince the rest of us that it is all a waste of time :D LOL

Shell can see a way to make more money. ;)

How positively wonderful.

Not going to comment on evil oil owning the battery maker? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

But the LNP can't :D LOL

What does that say about the LNP ?

or perhaps you mean they get kickbacks from renewables?

The LNP rarely endorses renewable energy industries but Shell can. :D LOL

Does that mean Shell can rarely endorse renewable energy industries?

Should Governments be in the business of picking and choosing winners/losers?

It has been tried before and the results were less than encouraging.

Well they like to keep taking credit for all of the jobs they have help create so I guess you can say they should be interested in promoting renewables so they can create some real jobs for a change ;)

Which of course is completely different from endorsing products.

So how many permanent green jobs have been created as opposed to losses in fossil fuelled industries?

So how many losses in type writer manufacturers and mechanics over the years because of computers ? Maybe you, socko and Tone should go back in a time machine where you would be very happy shoveling coal into a furnace :D LOL

Didn't you get the memo. The successful typewriter companies became computer companies. Think IBM. And the mechanics became module swap jockeys.

The term "energy" became popular with oil and gas companies back in the 1970s. It wasn't just a fashion. That is what companies like Shell are interested in. From a corporate perspective, they know they need to diversify, whether or not individually their stock-holders believe global warming has been brought about by the ever-increasing amounts of carbon pumped into the sky by human activity since circa 1830.

The sky is just a big garbage dump anyway, and the wind blows all the sh*t away, so no worries.

In the meantime, the corporate world is crunching the numbers, dollars, and futures. Its only mental dinosaurs and vested interests who think they can go back to the gas guzzling, coal burning 1950s.

The thing is, all energy sources available to humans on planet earth, come from the sun. New technology is making it possible to bypass inefficient storage matter like fossil fuel.

Sure, there will be a transition where oil and coal are in use alongside more advanced energy sources, but their days are numbered.

Perhaps you cave us the relative efficiencies of solar, wind, gas, coal and petroleum.
In BTU's perhaps?

As a fair comparison you should include the inefficiency all the way back to extracting it from a well in the middle east instead of thinking that it magically appears at the fossil fool bowser in another country ;)

So that would include the GHG emissions in transporting Chinese Solar Panels and Wind Turbines of any manufacture to Australia? Just for a fair comparison, of course. ;)

Versus continual GHG emissions from the extraction of every liter of crude oil, refinement, transportation across the ocean, further refinement, distribution etc.

I think renewables win hands down don't you ;) And to add to that they are now building wind turbines in Australia so you can eliminate that source of GHG.

You haven't articulated the GHG's and other noxious emissions that occur during the manufacture of solar panels and wind turbines.

Renewables are too intermittent in the manufacturing process, so they must use petroleum based products for extraction, refinement, transportation and further distribution.

The Tesla Gigafactory is powered by renewables. They are carbon neutral. It can be done but not with the LNP retards in charge.

It will be interesting to see if Shell just caretakes Sonnen our pours some money into it.... Potentially there to be in every house and energy storage for grid and renewables... I agree with Lee if its making money u cant fault Shell. ;)
