Title: Statues

We have statues of some historical figures like Cook and Flinders.  Why do we have one for Flinders' cat?

He had his cat for which they made a statue.  So...who else made up the 'their' you mentioned?

I saw a short doco on Flinder's Cat. It's a worthy 'statue' that reflects a good story, etc.

Now lets remember: Only British & Aboriginal Culture is allowed to exist in this part of the world, besides a sense of Americanised Colonialism trying to pass itself off as 'Aussie'.

Any 'true' and modern Australian culture reflecting the future of this country and not the past will be deemed Racist, Criminal, Invasive by Americans, British and Aboriginals.

Only Paul 'Muad-Dib' Atriedes is allowed to raise a Republic and lead all 'true' Sahulians to conquest over British, Aboriginals & Americans... here.  ;)  :D

No offence Setanta - but I think the 'playing dumb' questions by Aussie is like some creepy guy at a party who just wants to 'keep you close' and whisper quietly in your ear at some time. I can hear the music from Jaws even now as he knows how meaninglessly pedantic and unimportant the 'their' thing really is.

Not the point, Aussie was asking about "their" in the circumnavigation of our continent. To him there was no "their" in that or if there was he was denying it by asking "who is the their?"

Google who he sailed with. Seriously all you are going to to do is ask me that? I know the name of the ship but I can't name the crew but what does that matter? You know who "their/they" is in Flinders' own words posted above.

Not the point. You asked a question, I answered it. Whether anyone else should have got a statue is irrelevant. You are trying to make something that it is not. Do we then move on to everyone that has a statue/war medal? Get a grip. You asked a question, I answered. If you have a bone to pick, pick it but it has nothing to do with what was asked and what I answered.

I'd prefer to talk about the cat.
What an amazing tale.
How could a cat survive on a sailing ship without ending up in the sea?
The sailing ship would be a very hazardous place for a cat.
Apparently it would catch rats on the ship so it was allowed
free run of the place.

I had a cat once and it was my best mate.
That cat really loved me.
It used to sleep on my bed every night except in summer.
It's purrs used to send me to sleep.
I cried when it died.
She lived till 18 years of age!

Trim was born in 1799 aboard the ship HMS Reliance on a voyage from the Cape of Good Hope to Botany Bay.[1] The kitten fell overboard, but managed to swim back to the vessel and climb aboard by scaling a rope; taking note of his strong survival instinct and intelligence, Flinders and the crew made him their favourite.[2]

Thanks Set.

TO THE MEMORY OF
TRIM
The best and most illustrious of his race
The most affectionate of friends,
faithful of servants,
and best of creatures
He made the tour of the globe, and a voyage to Australia,
which he circumnavigated, and was ever the
delight and pleasure of his fellow voyagers
Written by Matthew Flinders in memory of his cat
Memorial donated by the North Shore Historical Society

But he was stolen and probably eaten by a hungry slave.
How sad is that!  :'(

nothing wrong with that.

They should have thrown them all in the drink before allowing any ship to land in Australia, we'd have a lot more of our native wildlife left if they had.

our delusional cats love to kill for fun.... domestic cats kill millions of animals a year and they r well feed... There have been feral cats that have been killed and their stomach opened and they have over 20 different bits of animal in them, because after every kill they just take a bite...

well I only go by my own....I am not responsible for feral cats.....and what about cane toads....who poison anything and everything? and are spreading at a rapid rate to every state....my cats sleep 22 hours a day...and have been desexed since 2 months

people today are far more responsible than they were years back... and ferals would have their own  predators out there...

I read where they are going to poison the rabbits again.... ::) ::)

No they don't ... not just food ... often for fun  like wild dogs.

And Cods it's an indefensible argument to defend for any reason the amount of native wildlife that feral & domestics cats kill on a daily basis.

Not the point. You asked a question, I answered it. Whether anyone else should have got a statue is irrelevant. You are trying to make something that it is not. Do we then move on to everyone that has a statue/war medal? Get a grip. You asked a question, I answered. Dear oh dear, all those dogs for the hallway monitor to get upset about.

And not a dog, but there is also a statue of Bonn Scott, what has he done for Aussie lately?   ;D ;D ;D

There are also statues of cannons commemorating long ago wars, farm implements, dead poets. Even horses.

Thinking about it, maybe Aussie should present a short list of subjects for statues of which he does approve.  It would be far simpler than going through his idiotic outrages and objections individually.

I've read that Wiki a bit more now.  That trip he went on as negotiator and interpreter was not the circumnavigation.  It was to local coastal areas around Sydney.  Re the circumnavigation:

Quote:
He was recruited by Flinders on his circumnavigation of Australia between 1801 and 1803 in the Investigator.[7][5] Flinders was the cartographer of the first complete map of Australia, filling in the gaps from previous cartographic expeditions, and was the most prominent advocate for naming the continent "Australia". Flinders noted that Bungaree was "a worthy and brave fellow" who, on multiple occasions, saved the expedition.[8] Bungaree was the only indigenous Australian on the ship - and as such, played a vital diplomatic role as they made their way around the coast, overcoming not inconsiderable language barriers in places. According to historian Keith Vincent, Bungaree chose the role as a go-between, and was often able to mollify indigenous people who were about to attack the sailors, by taking off his clothes and speaking to people, despite being in territory unknown to himself. Flinders later wrote in his memoirs of Bungaree's "good disposition and open and manly conduct" and his kindness to the ship's cat, Trim.[5]

Apart from the last 9 years, I've always had both dogs and cats.... and birds, chickens, ducks, rabbits just to name a few.  I like cats. I just happen to like our native wildlife more.
I don't like cats that roam. Either lock it up, or shoot it. If you can't keep your cat properly you shouldn't have one.

Bullshyte read your own Wiki quote -

and locally here ... and there was an article in our own local rag today ... that he could not understand them & neither could the locals(Batdjulla/Butchella) understand him.

They could not even throw a spear with a womera Bungaree showed them.

Flinders wasn't to know that the different tribal groups all over the countries coast all spoke different languages/dialects to one another.

So it's all fictitious warm & fuzzy shyte ... after they dressed him up he wore the trappings to impress, cadge money & food around Sydney.

Exactly nor negotiator... he could no better converse with thus not be able to negotiate with different tribes around the coast than Flinders could.

So he was there why?

Flinders wanted him I assume believing him in some way useful in dealing with the Natives.

What's the reason you think he should have a statue?

To piss you off?  Why should the cat have a statue in a public place?

Maybe there should be a statue of Aussie instead?

He's famous or rather - infamous.

Well Queensland already has The Big Pineapple but I see no reason why they couldn't have a big child pinner.

Cabbies the world over would travel to see his not small right hand pinning a terrified child against a tree.

I think the BIG PEANUT is worth a mention  as well..

only in Qld.. ;D ;D

No, I don't blame the cats. It's the damn sailors who didn't throw then overboard whilst they were still out at sea who are at fault.

That's awful - you can't throw the pussy overboard to die!

How would you like to be thrown overboard out in the deep sea?

I'll add the cement!  :)

Do you see what kind of person Smith is?

A genius?

Smith is a cruel person who I hope will never own a cat or dog.

He said he would throw a pet cat overboard from a ship into the sea so that it would drown.
What a terrible thing to do.

I wonder if he has abused animals?

Apart from the last 9 years, I've always had both dogs and cats.... and birds, chickens, ducks, rabbits just to name a few.  I like cats. I just happen to like our native wildlife more.
I don't like cats that roam. Either lock it up, or shoot it. If you can't keep your cat properly you shouldn't have one.

That's the only decent comment you've made in this thread.

I'm Jake the Peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
With my extra leg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
Wherever I go through rain and snow
The people always let me know
There's Jake the peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
With his extra leg, diddle-iddle-iddle
The day that I born (oh boy) my father nearly died
He couldn't get my nappies on, how matter how he tried
'cause I was born with an extra leg, and since that day begun
I had to learn to stand on my own three feet
Believe me that's no fun
I'm Jake the Peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
With my extra leg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
Wherever I go through rain and snow
The people always let me know
There's Jake the peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
With his extra leg, diddle-iddle-iddle
I had a dreadful childhood really, I s'pose I shouldn't moan
Each time they had a three legged race, I won it on me own
And also I got popular, when came the time for cricket
They used to roll my trousers up
And use me for the wicket
I'm Jake the Peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
With my extra leg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
Wherever I go through rain and snow
The people always let me know
There's Jake the peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
With his extra leg, diddle-iddle-iddle
I was a dreadful scholar, I found all the lessons hard
The only thing I knew for sure, was three feet make a yard
To count to ten I used me fingers, if I needed more
By getting my shoes and socks off
I could count to twenty four
I'm Jake the [stops to count]
...to twenty five
I'm Jake the peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
With my extra leg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
Whatever I did they said was false
They said "quick march" I did the quick waltz
Then they shouted at me "put your best foot forward" - but which foot?
I said "it's very fine for you, you only got a choice of two"
But me, I'm Jake the Peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um
With the extra leg... diddle-iddle-iddle-um

Why? You clearly struggle with English comprehension. Seems to me talking about it can only help you.
We weren't talking about my total number of comments.

YOU were the one who said I made ONE decent comment.  I replied that One (decent) comment by me is twice as many (decent) comments than you've made. Since I was replying to your comment where you already specified that you were talking about 'decent' comments, I did not need to spell it out again, it was implied. That's how English works.

Like I said, let me know if you need it explained in another language. Don't be ashamed of your ignorance. You're only digging yourself into a bigger hole otherwise.
