Latest news ABC 24.
Whole suburbs will be switched off from electricity in the next few hours. Some are already switched off. The closed down Hazelwood and now they can't cope on hot days. |

They flog our gas off for peanuts but we have no gas turbine generators on standby !!
Mains voltage is down from 244V to 219 V at my place. So much for PV systems generating too much power and raising the voltage like the scare mongering LNP keeps telling us ! |

It's the Govts fault. They bring in too many immigrants when we don't have : the roads, the hospitals, schools, dentists - and now power stations. Why do we keep voting for these monkeys? |

It's what happens when you de-industrialize a country and replace a productive economy with a fake services economy that runs off a continual growth in debt and immigration.
Just take a look a what everyone is doing these days. All I see is rows of coffee shops with people sitting inside talking poo to each other ! What do these people actually do ? If they are not on a pension I bet they are not involved in making things. I bet they are working in useless businesses like energy retailers and micky mouse marketing or real estate scumbags. Just sh.t that pollies like to boast about here. For a country like Australia we should be building the biggest solar plants and feeding that power into the grid. It's not as though we are short of land or sunshine. Just crap rubbish lawyer scum governments people keep voting in that have no ambition. |

When will Lily D'Ambrosio tell us what happened with the generators at Hazelwood?
Here she was on TV yesterday - taking no responsibility herself as as the Minister for Energy, Environment, and Climate Change, and Minister for Solar Homes in the Andrews Labor Government. I think 3 generators were not working due to maintenance. Why would they be doing that in summer when they are most needed? How many traffic lights were out? How many accidents happened due to that? What were the deaths or injuries. Did anyone lose their life due to the power blackouts? Nothing on the news about what really happened. |

Hey Bobby
I think energy corporations have an easy way out now. ENGIE ran Hazelwood which required $400 million dollar upgrade to meet new pollution standards. So ENGIE being the environmentally friendly corporation that it is closed Hazelwood stating that, "Making climate policy a priority" Easy way out no one will question a friend of the environment who shuts down a power station with old technology. Hands up those that think corporations really do give 2 cents about the environment over profits......? |

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/what-caused-the-blackouts-in-melbourne-and-do-victorians-need-to-get-used-to-power-cuts/529137
What caused the blackouts in Melbourne, and do Victorians need to get used to power cuts? By Dan Harrison, Saturday January 26, 2019 - 12:34 EDT At the same time, three electricity generation units at coal-fired power plants in the Latrobe Valley were out of action (two due to unexpected outages, one due to planned maintenance) which reduced the amount of available power. To make matters worse, the hot weather reduced the efficiency of the coal-fired power stations that remained online, further reducing the available supply of electricity. These problems removed about 1,800 megawatts of electricity from the grid. Did the closure of the Hazelwood power station contribute to the situation? Victorian Opposition Leader Michael O'Brien said on Friday Labor's policies had led to Hazelwood's closure, and the Coalition had warned this would leave the state exposed. Hazelwood's closure in 2017 removed 1600 megawatts from Victoria's supply, but associate professor Liebman says this was an economic decision by its owners in a market that had more than enough power supply. Mr McConnell said Hazelwood's closure had "not particularly" contributed to the power shortage in Victoria because the state had enough power without it, at least on paper. He said were it not for the two unplanned outages at other Latrobe Valley plants, coupled with the extreme weather conditions, supply would have been sufficient. "If you had a heatwave and one of those units failing, we would have been fine," he said. "Or if we had two of the units failing, but it was not a heatwave, it would have been fine. "The combination of all three meant that it was going to be a difficult day." Ms D'Ambrosio said most of the 1800 megawatts of power capacity lost in the state on Friday was due to infrastructure failures in the state's coal and gas-fired power stations. |

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2018/jun/04/the-latest-weak-attacks-on-evs-and-solar-panels Efforts to undermine solar power The first salvo came via a Forbes article written by Michael Shellenberger, who’s running a doomed campaign for California governor and really loves nuclear power. Shellenberger’s critique focused on the problem of potential waste at the end of a solar panel lifespan when the modules must be disposed or recycled. It’s a somewhat ironic concern from a proponent of nuclear power, which has a rather bigger toxic waste problem. About 80% of a solar panel module can be recycled, but some portions cannot, and create potentially hazardous waste due to the presence of metals like cadmium and lead. The Electric Power Research Institute notes that long-term storage of used panels until recycling technologies become available may be the best option for dealing with this waste stream. Ultimately, it’s an issue that will need to be addressed as solar panels become more widespread and reach the end of their 25-plus year lifespan, much like the issue of nuclear waste. But it’s an issue that we should be able to resolve with smart policies and technologies. Shellenberger also raised concerns about the possibility “that cadmium can be washed out of solar modules by rainwater.” But that’s only a problem for broken panels, which are relatively rare except perhaps in the wake a natural disaster like a hurricane or earthquake. In a disaster area, leaching of metals from some broken solar panels is the least of a city’s problems. In short, it’s valid to note that end-of-life solar panel recycling and disposal is an issue that we’ll have to address smartly, but unlike climate change, it’s not a big or urgent concern wow its not like u Baron to just post stuff up without finding the source and weather it scaremongering or truth :) ;) |
