Title: Japan is cancelling coal now :) Post by DonDeeHippy on Oct 2nd, 2018 at 9:07am
https://cleantechnica.com/2018/09/24/this-is-huge-marubeni-shifts-from-coal-to-renewables/
Marubeni is a name most people have never heard of, yet this enormous Japanese conglomerate is involved in everything from agriculture to mining to global transportation. One part of its business is designing and building coal-fired generating plants for clients around the world. It also owns and operates several coal facilities. Last week, Marubeni made a major announcement on its website. “Marubeni Corporation recognizes that climate change is a major issue shared by all of humanity. It is a problem that threatens the co-existence of the global environment and society, a problem that has an enormous effect on Marubeni’s business and its shareholders, and a problem that Marubeni believes must be dealt with swiftly. Therefore, as part of Marubeni’s p, romotion of sustainable management, and in order to…fight global climate change, Marubeni has established new business policies regarding its coal-fired power generation business and its renewable energy generation business. There’s more to the story. According to Quartz, Marubeni intends to cut its ownership of coal-fired generating facilities by 50% before 2030, citing a report by Japanese financial news source Nikkei (paywall). Tim Buckley of the Institute of Energy Economics and Financial Analysis calls the announcement by Marubeni “one of the biggest breaking stories of 2018 in terms of energy transition [away from fossil fuels].” The company had plans to build more than 13 GW of new coal generating stations but those plans have now gone into the dumpster. Instead, Marubeni will double its investment in renewable energy from 10% of its energy portfolio to 20%. It is collaborating with Jinko Solar on the largest solar power plant in the Middle East — a 1.17 GW solar farm in Abu Dhabi. Less and less chance that coal power will increase in the world.... for a idea of how much that is... Australia uses about 30gwh and has a capacity of 50gwh so 13gw is a big amount to stop building :) I'm breathing better already. ;) |

"The new goal will be achieved by selling or transferring some of its coal-fired power assets and not renewing contracts at their time of expiry, a Marubeni spokeswoman said.
But it added that it might consider pursuing coal-fired power projects that adopt the best available technology and are compliant with government policies, leaving leeway for new deals." https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/09/19/business/corporate-business/marubeni-halve-coal-fired-power-capacity-2030/#.W7LLUhRoTVM Inscrutable these Asians Eh? BTW - it is one Japanese company, not Japan. |

It doesn't take much to make your post look silly. Still going with Japan rather than a Japanese Company? ;) And of course completely ignore the "will be achieved by selling or transferring some of its coal-fired power assets. So some company, probably Japanese will end up owning them. |

https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/05/japanese-energy-companies-scrap-2-gigawatt-coal-project/
Three Japanese energy companies announced last week that they have decided to scrap plans to build a 2 gigawatt (GW) coal-fired power station in the Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, saying that the project would not be economically feasible. This follows a similar decision a month ago announced by Japanese electric utility Chugoku Electric Power and steel manufacturer JFE Steel to scrap plans to build a 1,070 megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant, also in Chiba, and also citing the fact the project would not be economically feasible. Japan was one of the countries that coal Lovers where quoting as a country that was building new Stations.... A few months ago another Japanese company scarped plans to build a bunch as well..... No they will have to look at china and some 3rd world countries for salvation. ;) ;) |

You mean the one's China is already building in third world countries as well as at home? ;) But I wonder what they are going to use? it is not as if there is plenty of room in Japan for wind turbines ad solar panels. |

Japan has a l o n g way to go ... but they are heading in the right direction:
Japan plans shift toward renewable energy, planning for first time to cut plutonium stockpile KYODO, STAFF REPORT JUL 3, 2018 Japan will shift further toward renewable energy and cut dependence on fossil fuels and nuclear power, according to the country’s energy plan approved Tuesday by the Cabinet. Ahead of the automatic July renewal of the U.S.-Japan agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the plan for a medium- to long-term energy policy also mentioned that Japan will work to reduce its plutonium stockpile for the first time. The increased focus on renewables under the 2015 Paris climate accord underscores the nation’s daunting challenge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions drastically in the years ahead. The government, which updates the energy plan roughly every three years, kept its goals the same for its mix of energy sources in fiscal 2030 but did not give specific numbers for fiscal 2050 — the year when it has to clear its specific commitment in fighting global warming. Toward 2030, the government aims to have renewables account for 22 to 24 percent, fossil fuels 56 percent and nuclear power 20 to 22 percent of the country’s electricity generation, the energy plan showed. With its 2016 energy self-sufficiency ratio below 10 percent, resource-poor Japan needs to secure stable energy supplies for economic activity and national security while also ensuring the safety of nuclear power generation following the 2011 Fukushima accident. The country also needs to accelerate efforts to fight global warming, now that it has set the goal of achieving an 80 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions in fiscal 2050 from 2013 levels. The energy plan calls for supporting the development of a sustainable market for renewables, such as solar, wind and geothermal power, and encourages the use of hydrogen. Placing a priority on safety, the nation will cut dependence on nuclear power generation “as much as possible,” the energy plan said. Still, it also acknowledged that nuclear power is one of the viable choices to achieve a shift away from using coal and other fossil fuels and cut greenhouse gas emissions. Much of the country’s nuclear power plants have been taken offline since the Fukushima disaster. The administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is seeking to restart plants that have cleared safety checks. The Japan-U.S. nuclear pact currently enables Japan to continue its spent-fuel reprocessing program for 30 years to July 2018. Spent fuel from nuclear reactors is reprocessed to extract uranium and plutonium, which is then recycled into fuel called mixed oxide, or MOX, for use in fast-breeder reactors or conventional nuclear reactors. In a June 21st open letter to International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Yukiya Amano that expressed concern about the management of plutonium stocks, three anti-nuclear groups said efforts to restart nuclear reactors, especially those that use MOX fuel, to meet the long-term energy goal for nuclear power were unrealistic. “Our analysis over recent years, and to the present, indicates that Japan will fail to meet its nuclear restart target of 30 gigawatts by 2030 by a wide margin. Many more nuclear reactors are likely to be decommissioned” in the coming years joining the 17 that have been declared such since 2011, said a letter jointly signed by Hideyuki Ban, co-director of Citizens’ Nuclear Information Center, Aileen Mioko Smith, director, Green Action, and Shaun Burnie, a senior nuclear specialist at Greenpeace Germany. “In addition to the four reactors that have resumed operation with partial MOX fuel cores, it is uncertain how many of the remaining six reactors that have received MOX approval will actually restart during the next 10 years. They are all confronted with multiple challenges, including seismic faults, as well as legal and political opposition,” the letter added. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/07/03/national/tokyo-eyes-renewable-energy-plans-cut-plutonium-stockpile/#.XFu3RzMzaUk |

So the Japanese get a free pass to 2050, China to 2030. Japan per capita 7,819KWh or 7.819MWh. So something less than 7 people's power consumption from PV. |

Oh, BTW ... there are moves for more floating Solar farms... saves land which is somewhat less plentiful in Japan and has the bonus of cooling the solar panels to improve efficiency.
Damn clever these Japanese. 8-) |

https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/05/japanese-energy-companies-scrap-2-gigawatt-coal-project/ Umm its actually in the article what they r planning to replace the Coal Plants... good of u 2 ask Lee Since then, Japan’s nuclear power plants have been shut down or shuttered, and attention has increased dramatically — both politically and popularly — towards renewable energy, specifically offshore wind. In less than a year, several moves have been made by leading Japanese electric utilities to begin the process of building up an offshore wind energy industry. In July 2018, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) president Tomoaki Kobayakawa outlined his plans to not only develop 6 to 7 GW of renewable energy across Japan and overseas, but a promise to focus on offshore wind — particularly floating offshore wind. Just over a month later, Japan’s Electric Power Development Co., better known as J-Power, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with French multinational electric utility ENGIE to collaborate on power projects, specifically offshore wind and floating offshore wind projects. This was mirrored in January 2019 as Danish power giant Ørsted signed an MoU with TEPCO to explore the possibility and to work jointly on developing offshore wind projects in Japan — focusing first on the proposed Choshi offshore wind project near Tokyo. I guess if your interestd Lee u could google more info from that bit of stuff ;) |

That sound very interesting.
A couple of questions - What happens to a floating wind farm during typhoons? Do they break moorings and drift? Obviously they feather them so that no power is produced. Do floating wind farms pose a potential navigation hazard? "About 30 typhoons form each year over the Northwest Pacific Ocean, of which an average of about seven or eight pass over Okinawa Prefecture, and about three hit the Japanese main islands, especially Kyushu and Shikoku. But any region of Japan, including Tokyo, Osaka and Hokkaido can be visited by typhoons." https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2117.html Typhoons typically travel at 20KM/h. And bring transportation to a standstill. Typically for a day. |

The 65% capacity figure was achieved despite a hurricane and a severe winter storm with wave heights up to 27 feet..... Looks like early days, but they haven't broken their chains yet...… If they r like the Scotland one, something sticking 180 metres above the ocean shouldn't be to much trouble to navigate around... id say would have same trouble navigating around oil rigs :) ;) |
