Arrest over wild Melbourne street brawl

A teen has been arrested and released over a wild brawl involving 200 people in inner-Melbourne which left another man fighting for life after he was slammed by a car.
The 18-year-old was arrested on Sunday during a police search of his Cranbourne home after youths ran riot in Collingwood following a record label launch at the Gasometer Hotel.
"The man was interviewed and released, pending further investigation," Victoria Police said in a statement on Monday.

An 18-year-old Fitzroy man was hit by a car, pinned between two cars, and remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital with serious leg injuries.
Six other people were also injured in Sunday's brawl.
Three 18-year-olds, two 21-year-olds, and a 26-year-old all received non-life threatening injuries.
Up to 200 people were involved in the melee that spilled out onto the road from the 66 Records launch about "Some of the local police have indicated they were concerned about that, that's something I think police will need to absolutely have a look at," Police Minister Lisa Neville told 3AW on Monday.
"I'll certainly be speaking to Victoria Police about it."
However, she rubbished suggestions of a no arrest policy after no arrests during a similar event in Taylors Hill last month.
New Prime Minister Scott Morrison was on Melbourne radio on Monday criticising police efforts in the city.
"We have (Australia's) highest proportion of Sudanese population in NSW," Mr Morrison told 3AW on Monday.
"We don't have these problems in NSW, they're not happening in other cities. Why is it happening in Melbourne?"
He said it was up to Premier Daniel Andrews to ensure "there is a police force that is a force".
Event organiser J-Nelly told revellers to be on their best behaviour in a Facebook post on Friday, saying "violence will not be tolerated".
"A moment of anger isn't worth a lifetime of bad labeling (sic)," he wrote.

I did, all I could find was African Australians and PAcific Islanders. Its a gang problem, not a nationality problem.

An 18-year-old who had his leg amputated after he was hit by a car during a 200-man brawl was reportedly a 'person of interest' in the police investigation into the death of a Sudanese teenager.

Laa Chol, 19, died after she was stabbed at a party on the 56th floor of the EQ Tower on A'Beckett Street in Melbourne in late July.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, about 200 African and Pacific Islander Australians were involved in street fight outside the Gasometer Hotel in Collingwood.

An 18-year-old has had his leg amputated and is still fighting for life in hospital after he was crushed between two cars.

The victim was questioned by detectives from the Homicide Squad in relation to Ms Chol's alleged murder, because he was at the apartment at the time of her death, the Herald Sun understands.

It is unclear if the brawl was a revenge attack for the alleged murder, or if the injured man was deliberately targeted.

A violent brawl that broke out after the launch of a hip-hop record label in Melbourne at the weekend has been linked with the recent murder of South Sudanese teenager and talented soccer player, Laa Chol.

An 18-year-old Fitzroy man, who was hit by a car during the brawl involving up to 200 youths of South Sudanese and Pacific Islander backgrounds in Collingwood early Sunday morning, was reportedly interviewed by police after Chol’s stabbing death in July.

Police have yet to comment on reports suggesting that the injured man had been a person of interest in the case. He is understood to be in hospital with critical injuries.

The news comes as Gasometer Hotel owners Shannon Vanderwert and Clint Fisher distance themselves from the brawl which erupted in their pub during a hip-hop label launch party.

“We do not stand for violence, abuse or discrimination of any kind, and the events of this past weekend have been deeply upsetting for all of us,” they wrote, “We are co-operating with Victoria Police as part of its investigation.”

66 Records event organiser and artist J-Nelly had earlier warned patrons on Facebook to avoid violence. A fight between youths started inside The Gasometer during the launch party. A group of nearly 200 people later streamed out into nearby Mater St where brawling occurred. Five youths are in hospital with minor injuries as a result.

Victoria Police tried to stop the music label launch at the centre of a violent brawl in Melbourne, after learning that people with criminal records would be in attendance.

However, the organiser proceeded after obtaining advice from a Fitzroy community legal service, police have revealed.

Victoria Police acting deputy commissioner Bob Hill also defended his he police response to the incident, involving up to 200 people, which resulted in seven people being hospitalised. One man, who was hit by a car, is in a coma after having his leg amputated.

Commissioner Hill said claims police were unwilling to make arrests were false and that police numbers had been doubled in Melbourne’s CBD at the weekend.

He said police visited the Gasometer hotel in Collingwood, where the Record66 launch party took place, on eight occasions during the evening and were minutes away after receiving a call that trouble had broken out.

They pursued several individuals on foot unsuccessfully.

The Herald Sun has also reported that local police asked for more resources but were knocked back.


The fight ended when a car rammed into the crowd and pinned an 18-year-old Fitzroy man, crushing his leg. The driver is yet to be arrested.

“The safety of our staff, patrons, performers and the local Collingwood community is our number one priority, and we work very hard to provide a safe and inclusive environment for everyone,” Mr Vanderwert and Mr Fisher wrote.

“We’ll keep working with the local authorities, event organisers and musicians to make sure The Gasometer is a place where we can come together to celebrate, showcase and support the incredible live music scene for which Melbourne is renowned”.

A 17-year-old male has been charged with Chol’s murder, and a 16-year-old has been charged with accessory to murder and assault.

No arrests or only one arrest is normal.
I bet the police themselves are furious about this.
I'm sure they'd like to sort this problem out
but politically correct pollies are stopping them.
