These reverse osmosis plants all seam to be white elephants, Gold Coast has one too I think, desperate politicians do silly things sometimes, that money could of been spent fixing river systems that r so damaged or even dams. Everyone in Melbourne could have a rain water tank.... so many options.

Now if only they would stop sucking all the water from the Murray River. That would fix the majority of issues right there. Irrigation has a lot to answer for.

Because we are governed by hysterical cretins who so desperately want to believe in global warming as an immediate threat controlled by Australia, p1ssing away billions is not big deal.

They will 'fall into the  swamp' long before they will ever be needed. Kiss that money good bye and hope we didn't need it for something like hospitals, education and health. ohh wait we do.

The one in Sydney was built during the reign of the Labor Govt when Eddie Obeid was basically in charge. What's a bet he got a drink (no pun intended) off the construction.

I think if we continue with the big population ideas of
all the politicians - where we'll have 50 million people by 2050
then eventually we'll need extra water - droughts or not.

Also - Australia is a land of droughts and flooding rains.
We will have a long drought sooner or later.
The desal plants will get used one day.
It's just a pity that they cost so much even when left sitting idle.

What annoys me is that a North South pipe line was never built
in all our history.
Trillions of litres of water falls on the Northern territory every rainy season and
simply washes out to sea.
If we only we could harvest that water & send it south via a gigantic
pipeline pumped by solar powered pumps then we'd have more than enough water
for all the cities & even the farmers.
We'd have more water than we'd know what to do with.

Yes Nail,
the overpopulation of Australia has to be considered in a proper debate -
the one the Dick Smith tried to have.

One of my favourite wastes was the 3rd runway. we had a decade of propaganda telling us how much we needed a third runway without ever being told that the day number 3 opened number 2 would be closed.

Yes what a great idea - get the water 3 years after you need it. But then 3 years later you don't need it anymore.

This is exactly why we have one now. We needed it when building started.

Yeah our current dam and most of the rest of Australia has at least three years of water.

Maybe you should look at fixing that problem first before build a desal that costs hundreds of millions just to sit there and fall apart. Believe it or not dams are useful for preventing your population from getting thirsty.

Jeez just have a look at the half a dozen or so white elephants we have parked up all around Australia and tell me truly if you think that was a good idea to waste all that money for absolutely no return.

I look at this from a different perspective.

Perth would be totally stuffed without the desal plants.

Our catchment dams are all but useless, groundwater is not never ending, it to will suffer from lack of rain.

So Perth got it right building the desals.

Forget which ever shade of government is in power making decisions, its a gamble to build or not to build.

We dont want to be like Cape Town and have severe water restrictions as they rush to build desal plants.

So Perth got it right Cape Town got it wrong,, it could be next season when the desal is required and it will be there.

The Liberal Party of Victoria deserve much of the credit for the development of our desalination plant
It was only later, that Labor came on board with the policy

The Liberal Party of Victoria has written into their constitution that the party must take the opposite stance on any Labor Party policy
So from this moment the Liberal Party of Victoria was forced into opposing desalination as a water resource

At the beginning of this decade - good rains ended a fourteen year drought, that covered most of Victoria
The Mallee region is STILL in drought

Until the drought ended - it was estimated Melbourne's taps would run dry, within six months
This "worst case scenario" has become a reality for Capetown, South Africa
Water is being shipped in, by the tanker load
It is being rationed at 30 litres per person - per day
Capetown is scrambling to build a number of de-sal plants - ASAP

I don't want to see this type of national disaster in Australia
The Melbourne catchment area has recently showed all the signs of entering into ANOTHER drought - which may well be longer than the last

Living on a rural property, I look after my own water supply matters

But I don't object to my thirty cents a day - as an insurance - to guarantee water supply in my home state

YES

... as I stated - 30 cents a DAY, per Victorian

Is this too high a price to pay too guarantee water continues to flow through your household taps ?
And this is not a flat rate for all
It's an AVERAGE

Victorians have been paying this "insurance premium" for many years, yet STILL remain one of - if not the - most financially healthy state in the nation

And how do you collect your water ration - if you-re a pensioner who doesn't drive a car ?

It's possible that unusual droughts and global warming aren't the sole reasons for having a de-sal plant.

Water contamination would be a fairly simple and devastating method if we were to be attacked.

We have an army that we don't (shouldn't) want to use, and that of course costs a fortune.
Think of it as part of our defense force, then you may think differently.

Interesting theory Amadd, but if that ever happened - wouldn't they blow up the plants also? They are sitting targets.

We would have been better off giving more protection to our natural underground water storage and even building underground storage from surface run off for emergencies.

These desalination plants chew up dolphins, dugongs etc - not to mention billions of dollars and then sit idle.

Why do we have a military and not use it?

Why do we need F35s?

Why do we need $ 36 billion of submarines?

The poor condition of the desalination plant is a sad reflection of Australian engineering, products, and maintenance.

Evidently the Mechanic and his sidekick Bobby were laborers on the desalination projects.

I don't think this is really about climate change, its what the governments did in a time of drought, was it the best way to go.
I personally think they should of spent money on getting everyone tanks for roofs , regenerating and addressing the river systems, maybe a dam or 2 or even deepening existing dams so no other land gets altered.

I don't think this is really about climate change, its what the governments did in a time of drought, was it the best way to go.
I personally think they should of spent money on getting everyone tanks for roofs , regenerating and addressing the river systems, maybe a dam or 2 or even deepening existing dams so no other land gets altered.
Easy being Captain Hindsight though  :P :P

True.

From what I can tell, these ongoing costs were originally budgeted for, to the tune of something like $6 billion to 2039, but at this rate they'll chew through that much quicker.

Water security is important.  Can water security be like electricity with roof panels and storage being an actual supplement?  It seems far more complicated than that :(

None of the desal plants are being used...  what a waste of money...  all thanks to people like Tim Flannery... :D :D :D

Flannery did say none of our dams would ever be full again while fearmongering with his climate change religion.

I agree, up to the point at which Flannery never actually said that.

Flannery...

Quote:
even the rain that falls isn’t actually going to fill our dams and our river systems

And...

And again what don't you understand about context.

I understand it fine.
Flannery and his acolytes are the one's with comprehension problems... :D :D :D :D :D

So far the states that built desal plants with taxpayer's monies due to the idiocy of Flannery haven't had to use them.

Bobby, darling, you should subject yourself to treatment from Ozpolitic amateur psychiatrists Gordon and Valkie Pty. Ltd.

Gordon and Valkie have boasted of years of treatment of people they are associated with.

Bobby, darling, you are suffering a very severe case of psychosis and persecution complex.

You have made yourself a victim in your own mind and you are manipulating your conspiracy and persecution fantasies to torture yourself to prove your victimhood.
