Title: Earth, Greatest TwoYear Cooling Event in a Century
Post by The Mechanic on May 10th, 2018 at 8:58pm
a good read that exposes the GW Loopy's...

Quote:
Our planet has just experienced the most extreme two-year cooling event in a century.

But where have you seen this reported anywhere in the mainstream media?

You haven’t, even though the figures are pretty spectacular. As Aaron Brown reports here at Real Clear Markets:

From February 2016 to February 2018 (the latest month available) global average temperatures dropped 0.56°C.

You have to go back to 1982-84 for the next biggest two-year drop, 0.47°C—also during the global warming era.

All the data in this essay come from GISTEMP Team, 2018: GISS Surface Temperature Analysis (GISTEMP). NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (dataset accessed 2018-04-11 at https://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/).

This is the standard source used in most journalistic reporting of global average temperatures.

The 2016-18 Big Chill was composed of two Little Chills, the biggest five month drop ever (February to June 2016) and the fourth biggest (February to June 2017).

A similar event from February to June 2018 would bring global average temperatures below the 1980s average.

February 2018 was colder than February 1998.

To put this temperature drop in context, consider that this is enough to offset by more than half the entirety of the global warming the planet has experienced since the end of the 19th century.

Since the end of the Little Ice Age in the 1880s, the planet has warmed by about 0.8 degrees C.

You might think that was not a particularly drastic rate of warming to worry about. You might also note that such a rate of warming is well precedented in periods throughout history, such as during the Minoan, Roman and Medieval warming periods.

Nonetheless this 0.8 degrees C rise – 0.9 degrees C, at a push – is the terrible climatic event the alarmist establishment has been assuring these last few decades is the worst thing ever and something that should worry us awfully.  :D

So is this sudden cooling an even-worse thing?

Not necessarily. As Brown goes on to explain in his piece, you can’t extrapolate trends from such a short time scale.

Well, not unless you’re a climate alarmist… As we know from long experience, if it had been the other way round – if the planet had warmed by 0.56 degrees C rather than cooled, the media would have been all over it.

My point is that statistical cooling outliers garner no media attention. The global average temperature numbers come out monthly.

If they show a new hottest year on record, that’s a big story. If they show a big increase over the previous month, or the same month in the previous year, that’s a story.

If they represent a sequence of warming months or years, that’s a story.

When they show cooling of any sort—and there have been more cooling months than warming months since anthropogenic warming began—there’s no story.

Meanwhile a study by Judith Curry and Nic Lewis – also largely unreported by the mainstream media – confirms what skeptics have been saying for years: that the computer models used by the alarmist establishment to predict global warming are running too hot.

In the study, authors Nic Lewis and Judith Curry looked at actual temperature records and compared them with climate change computer models.

What they found is that the planet has shown itself to be far less sensitive to increases in CO2 than the climate models say. As a result, they say, the planet will warm less than the models predict, even if we continue pumping CO2 into the atmosphere.

As Lewis explains: “Our results imply that, for any future emissions scenario, future warming is likely to be substantially lower than the central computer model-simulated level projected by the (United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), and highly unlikely to exceed that level.

This brings projected “global warming” from being potentially dangerous to being easily manageable.

Which is why, of course, it is unlikely to get much attention from a scientific establishment and a complicit media that much prefers to ramp up the global warming scare – even when the evidence doesn’t support it.

Good post Mechanic.
I feel sorry for Monk - stuck now in Tasmania in old age
& with terrifying cold coming his way -
all because he believed so much in global warming.

The globe has warmed like 1.2°C since 1880.

A 0.56°C cooling would have removed half of that! Nonsense!

I have seen idiots and liars post that stuff on Twitter but dunno who started that lie. 0.056°C maybe—cooling down slowly from the 2016 El Nino.

Have a look at the graphs:

The temperature measurements at Cape Morris Jesup, the northernmost point of mainland Greenland, tells that story. In the month of February, since 1981, it has been rare for hourly air temperatures to spike above freezing. In 1997 it happened once. In 2011 it happened five times, and in 2017 it happened seven times. This year, it happened 59 times.

Last year was the second warmest year with hardly any cooling from El Nino 2016. Now there is a weak La Nina but that is about finished. At some stage a new El Nino will cause a new peak temperature.

After the 1998 El Nino 1999 showed a marked retreat from El Nino temperatures. Not so 2017.

You are such a hypocrite Mechanic. Here you are accepting global temperature data because you think that it suits you. Yet when that global temperature data doesn't suit you they are branded liars and charletons.

Media Watch did a report in this very subject

Quote:
"… from February 2016 to February 2018 global average temperatures dropped by 0.56 degrees Celsius.

— Outsiders, Sky News, 29 April, 2018"

And those figures are certainly accurate.

So, is the Ice Age really just around the corner? Well, no, it’s not. Or not on this flimsy evidence.

Because, as you can see here, the first two months of 2018 were cooler than 2016, but:

"Earth’s 2016 surface temperatures were the warmest since modern record keeping began in 1880 …

— NASA, 19 January, 2018"

And global temperatures are still way above the 20th century average, with March 2018 the sixth warmest ever. And February the same.

See mechanic, I can actually do the right thing and post links

So once again mechanic you are confusing weather with climate. Cherry picking February 2016 because it happened to be in the middle of an El Nino event.

FAIL again mechanic  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Wasn't Greenland warmer during the time of the Vikings?

What was the CO2 level then?

Interesting what the fohn winds do to temperature in Greenland.

"Føhn is a special wind that occurs in Greenland when the air blows up over the ice ice, so the moisture spills out. When the wind blows down from the ice again, the temperature rises sharply in the now dry air.

DMI has measurements from Kap Morris Jesup back to 1980, and reveals that in February, absolute degrees are definitely not everyday at the world’s northernmost land-based measurement station. In fact, DMI has only twice previously measured similar high temperatures. The first time was in 2011. Second time last year; ie in 2017. Both times, føhn-winning may have contributed to the high temperatures."

Yeah. No uncertainties in he global temperatures whatsoever. /sarc

And before about 1970 Surface Land Station data is poor. Let alone Sea Surface Temperatures.

Except of course 1997 temperature was 62.45ºF and 2016 was 58.79ºF. According to the data on NOAA. so according to NOAA 2016 was actually COOLER than 1997.

"The global average temperature of 62.45 degrees Fahrenheit for 1997"

https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/global/199713

"The average global temperature across land and ocean surface areas for 2016 was 0.94°C (1.69°F) above the 20th century average of 13.9°C (57.0°F)"

1.69 + 57.0 = 58.69°F

One of the reasons I locked that thread was the uncivilised language from many parties.
That thread got out of hand.
The whole environment forum got out of hand when I wasn't here to moderate it.

My original idea was to have a different forum to the rest
of Ozpolitic
where there was more sensible debate devoid of foul language and abuse.

On the other hand - I can't be monitoring every post.
It's up to members to try & remain civilised.

From Kap Morris Jessup? Weather station since 1980? That is only just over 1 WMO mandated climate cycle. You would need a second climate cycle, at least, against which to make comparisons.

Or did you mean 2016 "hottest year evah" that was cooler than 1997? ;D ;D ;D ;D
