Title: Free Flying courtesy of the sun Post by DonDeeHippy on May 1st, 2018 at 8:38am
I love the solar impulse guys and I daydream a lot about the impacts these guys have, with that plane u could fly Melbourne to Sydney in 9 hours totally on the sun, what a wonderful way to spend a Sunday ?

Yeah. One way, one person, no luggage. What more could you want?

Title: Re: Free Flying courtesy of the sun Post by miketrees on May 1st, 2018 at 4:33pm So could we have solar aircraft used for communications? Once they are up there soaking up sun above the clouds. Having enough charge to last overnight,,, oh. |

After the 8 world records set by the Solar Impulse prototype, when it became the first solar airplane ever to fly through the night, between two continents, and across the United States, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg accomplished the ultimate phase of the adventure: the 2015-2016 First Round-The-World Solar Flight.

Nope. A solar plane with battery storage; what would need to happen? A larger solar collector, more wingspan. Many more heavy batteries. So much more weight and so very little (if any) increase in load. Of course feel free to correct me. |

9 hours cramped up in an aircraft, to get only a few hundred kilometres down the road, fkk that |

It’s still very new tech, 100 kms a hour now, won’t be long till some real speed happens, better batteries, better solar panels, better planes, even now it’s faster than car and set up for overnight flight. I can see lots of grey nomads loving the idea of going town to town, explore where they want and no fuel costs. |

Propeller driven aircraft are seriously limited for speed, so every flight will be a slow flight, and it will never get any better than that Luckily the US Air-force and US Navy are working on synthetic jet fuel that will send this flying joke to the rubbish bin. |

For the pilot. DonDeeHippy wrote on May 1st, 2018 at 7:49pm:
Now they have to upscale it. More weight. More heavy batteries. You are still limited to a chemical reaction which is not all that efficient. |

Title: Re: Free Flying courtesy of the sun Post by miketrees on May 1st, 2018 at 8:02pm So can we have a solar plane that will do the work of a satellite then? |

Yes totally agree with u improvements will happen with better solar collectors, better batteries and a better plane.... Considering the panels and batteries have improved so much in the last ten years I’d say it won’t be far off. |

Usable fuel to transport actual passengers and freight and at the same sorts of speeds and quantities as currently enjoyed is fkken awesome, even if you have to pay for it. This delusion that everything powered by sunlight is somehow going to be totally free of any costs to the end user is fkken insane, you and nails really need to get a reality check. |

Your loosing ur touch big u forgot to call me a socialist. Solar panels have 20 year warranties electric motors have less moving parts, still be breaks but not many, free fuel but still have matenance etc . I just posted a thread about mushroom waste being good for fuel, it’s all happening ;) |

Yeah jet engines don't have that many moving part either, what they do have is a massive amount of power to lift large aircraft full of people over long distances and do it quickly And a solar electric propeller driven aircraft will never even come close to achieving anything remotely worthwhile. What you're talking about is nothing more than a curiosity, something to get the dullard socialists all worked up. ;D ;D ;D ;D |

Will the plane keep flying if you lose a motor? We know the jets will. Solar panels - a mature technology - 60 years since first used in satellites. Batteries - Another mature technology - over 160 years. Wind generators - Another mature technology - over 120 years old. What does that mean for the future? It will be only incremental increases. No big jump forward. |

I guess depends on how many engines on the plane. Umm mass produced solar panels 17% in 2012 , 29% in 2016 efficiencies Lithium battery doubled density in last ten years Solid state look to be next big battery even lighter So yes old tech but last ten years have been huge both have doubled. Now combustion motors that’s a tech that haven’t improved much last 10 years. |

" https://news.energysage.com/what-are-the-most-efficient-solar-panels-on-the-market/ 2018. I guess they regressed over the last two years. ;) If it is solid state it is not a battery. It is a semiconductor. But dream on. |

Do u know anything about the airplane we r talking about, or have u just come in here to insult. The conversation is about the power of the plane getting lighter, in case u missed that...... now pretend I'm talking slow to u so u will understand, the lighter the power supply the better the plane will fly. Id think if u had any interest in planes at all, u would be blown away with this plane, its a incredable feat of engineering and the first one that can fly nonstop for as long as the pilot can handle it. You do know that prop planes will be around forever and jets r very expensive to buy use and maintain. |
