More than 50 religious leaders have banded together to urge Adani to abandon its Queensland coal project and invest in renewable energy instead.

Christian ministers, rabbis, nuns, ordained Buddhists and imams from across Australia have written a letter that will be hand-delivered to Adani's Townsville headquarters on Wednesday.


The proposed $16.5 billion Indian-owned Adani Carmichael coal mine project in the Galilee Basin has been given federal government approval.   :(


"Protecting our common home and all those who live here is an essential part of each of our faiths," they wrote in the letter to Adani chairman Gautam Adani.

The leaders oppose all new coal mining in the Galilee Basin, with fears it could impact on water supplies, climate change and the Great Barrier Reef.   :(

Adani has argued the $16.5 billion Carmichael mine would be a boon for jobs in struggling areas of regional Queensland.


The religious leaders said they also supported local jobs and has called for an increased investment in renewable energy like solar.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]   

"Coal communities need serious investment to make the transition from the dirty energy of the past to the clean energy of the future," they wrote.


The Anglican Dean of Brisbane, Dr Peter Catt, at St John's Anglican Cathedral.


The letter has several high-profile signatories, including Muslims Australia President Dr Rateb Jneid and Anglican Dean of Brisbane Dr Peter Catt.

"Mr Adani can do so much good and right now he's at an important crossroads," Rabbi Jonathan Keren-Black said.

Well if it is based on Australia's religiousness the note should be in a round file before being opened.

Maybe they should demand the coal mines in their own states be shut down first, along with the filthy coal fired powers stations that light up their churches, fkken wankers.

Religion has nothing to do with it 'directly',
but on the Radio its been boasted on talk-back about all the 'many peoples' who are coming together against Adani.
So bringing in 'Holy' people is up there with bringing in 'Celebrities'.

Of course, when it comes to Demonstrations, Protests, Petitions ...they all have to rely on 'numbers', because 99% of the time, they have SFA 'money' to do anything about it.

When have you ever seen multi-millionaires/billionaires get in an oppose upon behalf of Conservation or Environmentalism?? :-?
Hardly ever. Sure many 'donate' to some degree. But they never lend their 'weight or power' to oppose directly.
Instead, its a bunch of 'poor' people with poorly spelt placards.
